On Negative Conductance Activity in 2-Port Networks

It is shown that using lossless embedding, it is possible to modify the nature of the real parts of the port conductances of an active 2-port network at a single frequency. Two simple tests are given which predict whether the signs of the port conductances can be changed from negative to positive. The range of values of the embedding which cause this to happen are determined graphically. © 1974, IEEE. All rights reserved.

As Europe competes in today's global marketplace and strives to influence high-tech research and development, leaders of the European Commission must determine strategic areas of research and development and successfully support and finance projects in these areas. To this end, the EC has set up Framework Programs to define central R&D areas and draft a five-year budget for each program. As the end of the current program, FP4, draws near, those involved with the EC are busy planning for FP5, set to start in 1999. One influential EC voice belongs to Thierry Van der Pyl, head of the HPCN unit in the EC Program on Information Technologies (Esprit). He has been with the Commission since 1984 and has helped shape Europe's HPC R&D programs. The author considers how HPC is a central factor in European research. She considers a user-friendly model, the new networking dimension and the five main Esprit HPCN research areas.

On Discontinuous Electromagnetic Waves and the Occurrence of a Surface Wave

Two problems are considered: (1) The field around a dipole free in space. Contrary to the usual treatment, where the moment of the dipole is considered to vary harmonically in time, here the moment is assumed initially to be zero but at the instant t = 0 to jump to a constant value, which it further maintains. (2) The same dipole is placed vertically on a horizontal plane separating two media of different refractive index. It is shown that the resulting disturbance on the plane is composed of two space waves and one surfaced wave. First the Hertzian vector at a distance p from the dipole is zero. At t = t 1 the disturbance arrives there through the less dense medium, and slowly begins to rise till, at the moment t = t'l, when the disturbance has had time to reach the same distance through the second (denser) medium it reaches its final static value and further stays constant. During the transitory interval t1 < t < t2 the disturbance is found to be representable, apart from a constant, by a pure surface wave. The two problems are solved with the help of the modern form of the operational calculus based on the two-sided Laplace transform. Amplitude death is a coupling induced stabilization of a fixed point in nonlinear oscillators. This phenomenon cannot be observed in two identical nonlinear oscillators coupled by a diffusive connection. However, it has been analytically confirmed that a diffusive dynamic coupling can induce death. This study derives a necessary and sufficient condition for amplitude death in van der Pol oscillators coupled by a diffusive dynamic coupling. The well-known RC line (T-type) is used to implement the dynamic coupling.

Distributed energy resources (DERs) provide many benefits for the electricity users and utilities. However, the electricity distribution system traditionally was not designed to accommodate active power generation and storage at the distribution level. The microgrid provides an effective approach to integrating many small-scale distributed energy resources into the bulk electric grid This paper presents an agent-based control framework for distributed energy resources microgrids. The features of agent technology are first discussed An agent-based control framework for DER microgrids is then presented To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed agent-based control framework, simulation studies have been performed on a dc distributed energy system that can be used in a microgrid as a modular power generation unit. Simulation results clearly indicate that the agent-based control framework is effective to coordinate the various distributed energy resources and manage the power and voltage profiles.

Microgrids (MG) with renewable energy resources have shown competitive operational advantages for smart grid integration. In the wake of events such as the July 2012 India blackout, recent interest has been directed to the deployment of MGs in grid-independent (islanded) settings. In this paper we develop an autonomous distributed framework for cooperation amongst a set of grid-independent microgrids to improve the overall microgrid network (MGN) reliability. We further develop an enhanced distributed algorithm to support the proposed system. This work adopts a game theoretic approach via coalition formation games (CFG) formulation for static and dynamic MGNs. We consider MGNs with variable renewable distributed energy resources (DER) penetration levels and variable wind generation percentage of the total renewable generation mix. Main results show cooperation gains for cooperative MGN, study the effects of rate policies, and show how the proposed system performs under different renewable DER penetration levels and wind generation percentages.

A new framework for integrating distributed energy resources (DERs) and energy storage devices, known as Flexible Distribution of EneRgy and Storage resources (FDERS), has been proposed recently. It offers the benefits of increased DER lifetime, optimal energy storage deployment, enhanced controllability and improved system robustness. This paper presents an autonomous cooperative agent based FDERS system. The pecking order or hierarchy of distributed energy and storage resources in FDERS can be varied based on the energy resource availability, response characteristics or fuel pricing of individual DERs. Such a hierarchical scheme may at first suggest a centralized control philosophy, but this paper has presented an improved and decentralized cooperative strategy with intelligent agents processing local information for delivering the larger system goals.

In this paper, large-signal S-parameters are reviewed, and transistors of Class-C are employed. Problems are encountered in obtaining large-signal parameters S12and S21. A novel method is concisely developed, based on theory presented herein. The acquired S-parameters parameters are applied to amplifier design accordingly. The predicted and measured output power are compared, and suitable conclusions are duly recorded. Copyright © 1978 by The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.

Tapes based on acicular iron particles give an outstanding recording performance compared to γ-Fe₂O₃ and CrO₂ tapes. Especially in the short wavelength region the signal to noise ratio is, respectively, 12 and 7 dB better, whereas the bias noise level is somewhat lower. The iron tapes have a high coercivity, between 80 and 90 × 10³ A/m, and hence the required bias is about 9 dB higher than for γ-Fe₂O₃. The print through properties are excellent. © 1973, IEEE. Output of the photovoltaic (PV) system drastically fluctuates depending on weather conditions. Therefore users of PV systems should manage their energy usage with forecast information of the PV output. Due to the reasons above, we have developed an estimation method of X% prediction interval of solar irradiance. We have achieved a high-accuracy prediction interval for any prediction coefficient X%. However, we found that there are some errors in a case where the prediction coefficient is high. In this paper, we improve the estimation algorithm of the prediction interval.
