It is proposed that the noise in an SIS (superconductor-insulator-superconductor) microwave mixer is shot noise, and that it can be treated in a similar manner to the noise in Schottky barrier diodes. A noise temperature is defined, and how it can be optimized is indicated. An extension of the noise temperature concept of the source is used that makes noise temperatures additive at all frequencies.

TESs are a scalable, flexible approach to designing and implementing efficient, reliable, and resilient electrification systems, both large and small scale. They can be implemented within a single building or home, across a campus, or across an entire region, as shown by previous demonstrations and current projects. Because of their ability to address both interoperability issues and optimization and management issues, they're an important technique for future electrification designs and will become even more practical as the process of understanding and assigning value to flexible DER and system objectives (both business and operational) matures. Ultimately, they should enable a broad range of operational, business, regulatory, and incentive models to be supported by future systems.

Comprehensive analysis of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) integration requires tools that provide computational power and flexibility. In this context, throughout this paper PHIL simulations are performed to emulate the energy management system of a real microgrid including a diesel synchronous machine and inverter-based sources. Moreover, conventional frequency and voltage droops were incorporated into the respective inverters. The results were verified at the real microgrid installation in CRES premises. This research work is divided into two steps: A) Real time in RSCAD/RTDS and PHIL simulations where the diesel generator's active power droop control is evaluated, the battery inverter's droop curves are simulated and the load sharing for parallel operation of the system's generation units is examined. B) microgrid experiments during which various tests were executed concerning the diesel generator and the battery inverters in order to examine their dynamic operation within the LV islanded power system.

Sea surface temperatures (SST) as derived from the Pathfinder sea surface temperature data set and the Along-Track Scanning Radiometer on-board the European Remote Sensing satellite provide a unique opportunity for comparing two independent SST data sets. Previous comparisons (Vazquez-Cuervo and Sumgaysay, 2001) with the ATSR-l instrument on-board the ERS-1 platform indicated that biases on the order of 1 degree are possible. A significant percentage of this bias appears to be attributable to cloud contamination in either the Pathfinder or ATSR data sets. We continue the comparisons, but with the ATSR-2 data.

This paper has focused on the operation of floating battery energy storages (BESes) as a technique to avoid the overloading of an islanded remote area microgrid which does not have access to a utility feeder. A suitable semi-decentralized technique is designed which is highly suitable for remote area microgrids, which mostly lack a communication infrastructure. Proper conditions and constraints for the operation of the battery energy storages are mathematically developed and validated under different scenarios by digital simulations in PSCAD/EMTDC.

Summary form only *** have observed modulation bandwidth enhancement to 28 GHz and evidence of reduced chirp, beyond the optimally tuned free running case, in strongly injection-locked DBR lasers. Bandwidth enhancement occurs because the total modal photon density depends on the phase between the master and slave fields, which varies during modulation due to the dependence of index on carrier density. This results in an increased coupling between the carriers and photons, giving an effectively higher differential gain. This effect appears to be stronger than the similar amplitude-phase coupling that occurs with detuned loading. Chirp reduction occurs only for very strong injection, which can be explained by the fact that chirp reduction can only be achieved for modulation frequencies less than the locking range, which increases with injected power. For higher frequencies, the chirp reduction due to detuned loading dominates.
