Modern distribution systems are implemented through micro grids: small power networks where generation is close to consumption and ICT supports the coordinated management of the different energy resources. In such systems, the central control unit manages energy dispatch from the different sources according to different criteria (technical, economical and environmental) and takes care of tertiary regulation. Such optimization for the tertiary regulation is performed with a time interval that typically is of 24 hours. This is due to the fact that it is necessary to take into account the charge and discharge cycles of storage systems. On the other hand, such long time leads to large errors in the prediction of energy generation and consumption. In this paper an algorithmic approach allows to overcome this problem. It is indeed possible to integrate uncertainty within the problem formulation attaining a dispatch plan for all the energy sources that will not lead to constraints violations even if the objective function's variables and parameters are affected by uncertainty. The results on a medium size system show the ease and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

A TM/sub 012/ -mode cylindrical cavity was mechanically critically couple with a microwave circuit at 3.2 GHz. A fluoroptic temperature sensing device was used to monitor temperature in the microwave environment. Stoichiometric mixtures of epoxy (DER 332) and amine (DDS) were heated in this sweeping resonant cavity for curing times of 10 and 30 minutes, respectively. On-line temperature and dielectric properties versus time profiles were measured during the curing process. The dielectric properties versus temperature also measured during cooling. Thereafter, extent of cure of epoxy was determined Differential Scanning Calorimeter.

With governments around the world pushing for an ever increasing shift towards renewable energy production, large numbers of controllable distributed energy resources are starting to appear. Already a multitude of proposed control solutions have seen the light of day, but most are focused solely on the control itself and not the more practical network- and data management issues that follows trying to handle such huge portfolios. This papers covers a cloud based solution to the aforementioned issues, greatly aiding aggregators scale to meet future demands. It also includes a flexibility interface that are currently being researched by iPower, that is mapped to the well tested standard of IEC 61850 as additional sub-nodes. By mapping to existing standards, no major changes would be needed to adapt existing systems.

Distributed Generation (DG), has started becoming a reality in electricity networks. This analysis focuses more on a specific configuration of networks with DG, the Microgrid. Microgrids can operate in a coordinated way either interconnected to an upstream distribution network or autonomously in case of faults in the upstream medium voltage network, like the power systems of physical islands. Under this concept, the potential benefits for the upstream network can be significant in terms of both losses avoidance and emissions reduction. This analysis focuses on ways of evaluating these benefits on a group of typical microgrids. Especially for emissions impact assessment, the seasonal variation of the DG production is taken into account. This variation can also have significant impact on the losses reduction. Results from the application of the described approach to a typical LV Microgrid interconnected to an actual MV network using actual market prices and realistic operational costs of DG taking also into account different configuration of topology for one of the DG units.

This paper describes the challenges associated with real time modeling of electrical distribution networks. Distribution networks are tightly coupled electrically which makes it more difficult to model them using parallel processing techniques. Power electronic devices and distributed energy resources are continually increasing the complexity of distribution networks and consequently the task of simulating them in real time is more difficult. Detailed and accurate models need to be made available to represent distribution loads as well as protection and control equipment. In addition, a wide variety of communication protocols with significant bandwidth are required. Finally the trend to apply Power Hardware in the Loop simulations to test distribution equipment is a challenge in of itself.

Distributed energy resources have been receiving increasing attention over the past decade as alternatives to centralized generation. In the next few decades, the penetration of microgrids is expected to grow dramatically. The bulk of DERs will be integrated into existing distribution systems. To maximize the economic and reliability benefits of these installations, distributed systems will evolve into networked 'microgrids'. This paper describes a rational method of developing micro-grid architectures in a manner that maximizes the economic benefits of deploying the resources. The method consists of a particle swarm optimization (PSO) formulation that seeks to make the most economical connections that will satisfy the stipulated reliability criteria. This paper describes the method and its implementation, and illustrates it by means of examples. The validation of the method using a rigorous dynamic programming approach, is also outlined

In order to make up for the deficiencies of centralized power production and distant transmission, microgrids become a hot topic of research in distributed energy systems in recent years. And they will play an important role during development of sustainable energy, electric utility deregulation and restructuring efforts. Microgrids, which include various distributed energy resources and controllable loads, can operate and be dispatched flexibly. They could operate in both grid-connected and stand-alone modes. Based on steady state characteristics of distributed energy resources, this paper proposes an optimization and dispatch model of microgrids in centralized control and objective functions with minimizing the cost of operation or depreciation, and maximizing environmental or comprehensive benefit. The model is validated by studying a specified case with different interactive operational control strategies, objective functions and power price.

Following the long-term goal of substituting conventional power generation, market oriented approaches will lead to interaction, competition but also collaboration between different units. Together with the expected huge number of actors, this in turn will lead to a need for self-organized and distributed control structures. Virtual power plants are an established idea for organizing distributed generation. A frequently arising task is solving the scheduling problem that assigns an operation schedule to each energy resource taking into account a bunch of objectives like accurate resemblance of the desired load profile, robustness of the schedule, costs, maximizing remaining flexibility for subsequent planning periods, and more. Nevertheless, also such dynamic approaches exhibit sub-problems demanding for centralized solutions for ahead of time scheduling of active power. In this paper we develop a hybrid approach combining the advantages of parallel tempering with a constraint handling technique based on a support vector decoder for systematically generating solutions; thus ensuring feasible overall solutions. We demonstrate the applicability with a set of simulation results comprising many objective scheduling for different groups of energy resources.

Ongoing move towards green power has encouraged greater participation of distributed energy sources (DERs) such as solar photovoltaic (SPV) arrays, fuel cells and wind energy to maximize reliability of distribution system. The major drawback of certain DERs such as SPV sources is that they lack reactive power component. Therefore, reactive power support is an important issue while evaluating reliability of distribution system. Without reactive power support, there may be voltage deviation from prescribed limits, sometimes leading to voltage instability. This paper corroborates the impact of DERs on distribution system reliability incorporating Static Var Compensator (SVCs).

Summary form only given. This study addresses T-stress effects on the locus of failure in adhesively bonded joints. Double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens were made using Al 6061-T6 adherends and DER 331 epoxy resin with rubber concentrations from 0% to 8%. In order to obtain different stress levels, specimens were loaded uniaxially to plastically deform the adherends. T-stress increased with the plastic deformation left in the specimen upon unloading. Under mode I loading, unstable or alternating crack propagation was seen when the T-stress in the specimen increased. After this stability transition occurred, failure occurred at or very close to the interfaces. However, the T-stress level where the stability transition occurred increased with adhesive rubber concentration. Post-failure XPS and SEM analysis showed that as rubber concentrations in the adhesive increased, failure tended to be more cohesive. FEA modeling using Franc2DI was conducted to predict crack propagation behavior. Results showed that when the crack is perturbed by an air bubble or flaw ahead of the crack tip, the crack continued to deviate from its original path if the T-stress was tensile. However, if the T-stress was compressive, a deviated crack would converge back to its original path. The convergence rate depended on the T-stress value. The FEA also predicted that under mode I loading, T-stress in specimens with thinner adherends was higher than that in specimens with thicker adherends, and failure tended to occur closer to the interfaces. This prediction was verified using DER 331 epoxy resin with 8.1% rubber and Al 6061-T6 adherends of varying thickness.
