Most faults in the overhead distribution networks are temporary in nature. The protection system is therefore designed to open the line in an attempt to clear the fault and then automatically reclose to reconnect the circuit once the fault has cleared. Typical open interval dead-band in the medium voltage distribution grids is in the range of 150-300 ms for fast reclosing shots. Distributed energy resources (DER) are incompatible with the present utility reclosing practices since the DER unit may prevent the arc extinction by continuing to feed the fault. This way, a temporary fault can turn into a permanent one. Also, during the circuit breaker open time of the reclosing sequence, the generators in the network usually tend to drift away from synchronism with respect to the grid. A reconnection made without synchronization may cause serious damage to the DER units, potentially leading to overcurrent and/or overvoltage conditions in the grid. This paper proposes an algorithm for adapting the auto-reclosing sequence based on the connectivity status of the DER units in the distribution grid. The solution has been modeled based on IEC 61850 standard for compliance with modern utility practices.

Distributed Resources in the Smart Grid, such as Distributed Generation (DG) and Responsive Loads (RL) are capable of providing a wide range of ancilliary services, if properly coordinated. However, because of their large numbers and distributed nature, using a fully centralized communication structure to achieve coordination can be prohibitive, due to scale and cost. Decentralized approaches based on multi-agent systems theory have been proposed and are focused on linear consensus algorithms that asymptotically converge to a cooperative solution. In this paper, an alternative approach, which converges in a finite number of steps is formulated. The protocol is based on linear iterative updates and known observability results from graph structured linear systems. Here, the protocol is also modified to address a generalized cooperation problem in the context of DG/RL coordination. Furthermore, the protocol is modified to reduce the number of operations per step, ensuring that it is applicable to a large scale grid, which is usually the case in practice. The applicability of the approach is verified through simulations, for the case of grid voltage support through Distributed Generation.

This paper explains the design of a communication system, using an Arduino microcontroller and GSM Module and its functions / associated components to be implemented in a microgrid. The microgrid control and coordination infrastructure has been realized as a hierarchical multi-agent system (MAS) comprising of the DG agents, the Mu agent and the D agent. The Communication (Mu) Agent acts as a link between the lower-level microgrid agents (distributed energy resources (DERs), the load, the storage and the utility grid) which provide the required digital parameter inputs, and the Control Agent comprising of the Cloud. Data storage, analytics and control commands are generated based on the rule engine updates given by the Utility Service Provider (USP) to the Cloud. The microgrid side input data are converted into appropriate GPRS signals within the Arduino. The specific functions that enable this conversion are elucidated as pseudocode. Further, the cloud control commands are sent back to the various microgrid-side agents via the Mu agent as GPRS signals. The communication strategy has been explained in detail and has been implemented using Arduino keeping in mind system costs, ease of operability and maintenance.

Decentralized competitive markets are essential for a meaningful growth of distributed generation. Currently most jurisdictions use administered prices at the retail level. Through the example of electricity trade at an electric vehicle charging facility, this paper presents a trade mechanism that can help create decentralized markets. The mechanism is based on random matching and subsequent bargaining between the electricity sources and the electric vehicles. The entity organizing the market sets designated trade parameters. The ensuing interaction between the electricity sources and the vehicles, where each is trying to maximise its own benefit, is modeled as a non-cooperative game of incomplete information. Equilibrium analysis and examples are used to demonstrate the merits of this mechanism. In comparison to the market clearing price based approaches, this model provides market governance capabilities that can help tune a market to local requirements. The distribution companies may find the model useful as it will allow gradual introduction of localised markets and thereby enable phasing in of the investments required for upgrade of distribution infrastructure to service the electric vehicle charging needs.

The primary objective of any speaker diarization system is to designate speech segments to one of K speakers in the conversation. In this work we will focus on telephone conversations, where the number of speakers is given and equal 2. We use a hidden-distortion-model (HDM)-based system. HDM allows using different emission models as speaker models. The choice of adequate emission models, properly representing the data characteristics is important for the systems' performance. We investigate the effect of several codebooks (CBs) based emission models, with Euclidian and Mahalanobis distances. The Mahalanobis distance was chosen due its potential to produce a better representation of the data's spatial layout, while limitations where maid to retain the model from divergence. The influence of the different methods is evaluated using 108 telephone conversations taken from the LDC CallHome corpus. All the experiments achieved results poorer than the original SOM-based system (DER=12.70%).

PEPCO HOLDINGS, INC. (PHI) IS one of the largest energy delivery companies in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States, serving about 1.9 million customers in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, and New Jersey. PHI's subsidiaries Pepco, Delmarva Power, and Atlantic City Electric (ACE) provide regulated electricity service to these areas. The ACE service territory has a number of renewable distributed energy resources (DER) installations, including landfi ll gas (methane), wind, and solar. In particular, solar installations in the form of photovoltaic (PV) systems have been increasing due to substantial fi nancial incentives in New Jersey, while Maryland, Delaware, and Washington, D.C. are also seeing activity due to incentives. In New Jersey, large systems are interconnected into the distribution system (12 kV) because the state has required all systems to connect to the distribution system if the system owners wish to earn solar renewable energy certifi cates (SRECs). Applications for installations in the PHI distribution system range from 1 kW up to 100 MW.

The use of renewable energy source (RES) in meet the demand of electrical energy is getting into attention as solution of the problem a deficit of electrical energy. Application of RES in electricity generation system is done in a variety of configurations, among others in microgrid system. Implementation of microgrid systems provide many advantages both from the user and from the electric utility provider. Many microgrid development carried out in several countries, because microgrid offers many advantages, including better power quality and more environmentally friendly. Microgrid development concern in technology generation, microgrid architecture, power electronics, control systems, protection systems. This paper reviewing various technological developments related to microgrid system and case study about microgrid system development using grid tie inverter (GTI). Microgrid system can implemented using GTI, power transfer can occur from GTI to grid when GTI has power excess and grid supplying power to GTI when GTI power shortage.

As a result of the increasing number of distributed energy resources (DER) in the electrical grid and their commitment to future market participation, control strategies for optimal operation of DER within microgrids gain importance. Ensuring a smooth, reliable and economic operation of a micro-grid, requires an energy management system that dynamically fits the consumption to the production in combination with storage and vice versa. Quick response of an energy management strategy is crucial for a microgrid as compared to a conventional energy system. This paper discusses the possibilities offered by an energy management system in the operation of a microgrid. Various types of power management and control strategies, in particular for eco-industrial parks, are analysed and discussed. Subsequently, an environmentally friendly energy management optimisation technique is described in detail. The emphasis is placed on CO 2 neutrality, energy management improvements and dynamical optimisation of electrical energy on eco-industrial parks.

This paper shows how multiple interconnected microgrids can operate in autonomous mode in a self–healing medium voltage network. This is possible if based on network self– healing capability, the neighbour microgrids are interconnected and a surplus generation capacity is available in some of the Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) of the interconnected microgrids. This will reduce or prevent load shedding within the microgrids with less generation capacity. Therefore, DERs in a microgrid are controlled such that they share the local load within that microgrid as well as the loads in other interconnected microgrids. Different control algorithms are proposed to manage the DERs at different operating conditions. On the other hand, a Distribution Static Compensator (DSTATCOM) is employed to regulate the voltage. The efficacy of the proposed power control, sharing and management among DERs in multiple interconnected microgrids is validated through extensive simulation studies using PSCAD/EMTDC.

With governments around the world pushing for an ever increasing shift towards renewable energy production, large numbers of controllable distributed energy resources are starting to appear. Already a multitude of proposed control solutions have seen the light of day, but most are focused solely on the control itself and not the more practical network- and data management issues that follows trying to handle such huge portfolios. This papers covers a cloud based solution to the aforementioned issues, greatly aiding aggregators scale to meet future demands. It also includes a flexibility interface that are currently being researched by iPower, that is mapped to the well tested standard of IEC 61850 as additional sub-nodes. By mapping to existing standards, no major changes would be needed to adapt existing systems.
