Ongoing move towards green power has encouraged greater participation of distributed energy sources (DERs) such as solar photovoltaic (SPV) arrays, fuel cells and wind energy to maximize reliability of distribution system. The major drawback of certain DERs such as SPV sources is that they lack reactive power component. Therefore, reactive power support is an important issue while evaluating reliability of distribution system. Without reactive power support, there may be voltage deviation from prescribed limits, sometimes leading to voltage instability. This paper corroborates the impact of DERs on distribution system reliability incorporating Static Var Compensator (SVCs).

Despite many years of effort in the distributed energy resources (DER) industry, there remains a need for an islanding detection method that a) facilitates, rather than conflicts with, DER participation in grid support functions; b) does not degrade power quality; and c) reliably detects a loss of mains without nuisance trips. This paper describes a method that can meet this challenge. The method is a communications-based method that uses statistical analysis on synchrophasor data measured in two locations, an upstream reference point and at the DER bus. Simulation results, and laboratory and field test results are presented for one very simple implementation of the method. It is shown that the method works very well, even in its simplest form.

The video plus depth format, which is composed of the texture video and the depth video, has been widely used for free viewpoint TV. However, the temporal inconsistency is often encountered in the depth video due to the error incurred in the estimation of the depth values. This will inevitably deteriorate the coding efficiency of depth video and the visual quality of synthesized view. To address this problem, a content-adaptive temporal consistency enhancement (CTCE) algorithm for the depth video is proposed in this paper, which consists of two sequential stages: 1) classification of stationary and non-stationary regions based on the texture video, and 2) adaptive temporal consistency filtering on the depth video. The result of the first stage is used to steer the second stage so that the filtering process will be conducted in an adaptive manner. Extensive experimental results have shown that the proposed CTCE algorithm can effectively mitigate the temporal inconsistency in the original depth video and consequently improve the coding efficiency of depth video and the visual quality of synthesized view.

This paper provides the theory and the machinery for the generalization of the celebrated mean-shift algorithm to exponential families. We show that the baseline version of the algorithm is a special case of the proposed one, the one formed by the multivariate normal exponential family with known covariance matrix. With the proposed generalization, we will be capable of clustering entities that lie on other probabilistic manifolds, and hence to increasing its applicability significantly. An example is given for the problem of speaker clustering.

Electric power generation and transportation sectors are considered as main sources of gas emission today. Renewable energy and Electric Vehicles (EV) show potential as promising solutions for emission reduction and energy cost saving. However, the integration of renewable energy generation into the electric grid can be difficult, because of the source intermittency and inconsistency with energy usage; uncontrolled EV charging can also impose more burdens on power systems. Those situations can be improved through coordinated charging of EVs and optimized operation of distributed generators (DG) that not only mitigates fluctuations in generation and supply, but also reduces energy cost and the emission of pollutants (CO 2 , SO 2 , and NO x ). Emerging smart grid also brings new options for Distribution System Operator (DSO) toward efficient and sustainable operation of the network. One of these options is the use of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) including DG, EV, and Demand Response (DR). Operating DER has several advantages for DSO such as having DER close to load centers which reduces total network power loss. Since DSO has several energy sources to satisfy the electric load demand in the network, it is necessary to deploy optimal scheduling for efficient usage of available energy resources. In this paper we discuss a stochastic scheduling in the distribution network considering uncertainty in renewable energy generation. The proposed model can be used to analyse the effect of using DGs and EVs on emission and operation costs of the network. Results clearly shows that cost saving could be achieved with proper planning and coordination of various DERs.

The organic growth and evolution of the future smart grid is expected to emerge as a well-planned plug-and-play integration of smart microgrids. A microgrid normally comprises a variety of inverter-interfaced distributed energy resources such as solar photovoltaic arrays, wind turbines, microturbines, fuel cells, energy storage devices, and controllable loads, in which a key issue is how to manage a microgrid in grid-connected and islanding modes under different converter control strategies. This paper presents a microgrid power flow study under variable load and generation conditions. The paper considers typical properties of inverter-interfaced microsources, including PQ inverter, PV inverter, and converter rated current and linear modulation constraints in the power flow study. A benchmark network is built by using PowerWorld simulator. But, variable load and generation data is created by using other software tools and then loaded into the PowerWorld simulator. The benchmark network is studied by considering different microgrid operation scenarios. Simulation evaluation demonstrates how the microgrid behaves under different power converter operating conditions in grid-connected and islanding modes, respectively.

Due to the strong impact of the deregulation of the electricity sector there is a growing need for the correct and timely information from different parts of the system. The introduction of an increasing number of modern intelligent electronic devices enables the interaction between devices in the electric power facility. This enables vertical and horizontal multi-dimensional data exchange. Different generations of different devices with their proprietary communication solutions prevent the establishment of free data and information exchange. Need for standardization of communication within the power system has resulted in the emergence of new standards. The increasing emphasis on ecology and sustainable development lead to a continuous growth of renewable energy sources. With the growing number of distributed energy resources on the power grid there is a need to establish a new model for process information system. This paper gives an overview of new technological solutions and standards that enable more efficient utilization of all available resources. Basic building blocks for the modeling process are presented. Certain specifics of distributed energy resources that affect the modeling process of information system for modern electric power system are presented in this work.

A high penetration of distributed energy resources results in an increasing network voltage in times of high feed-in. Therefore, an efficient voltage control is required. Small run-off-river hydro power plants offer the opportunity to control the network voltage by reactive and active power. Thus, these units have to be connected to a virtual power plant. Within a virtual power plant, the units can be controlled by an energy management system, which is able to communicate with the several hydro power plants. By considering four scenarios, the efficiency of the various voltage control measures is investigated. Thereby, the active and reactive power feed-in by small hydro power plants is varied to control the voltage in the electrical network in times of high feed-in by photovoltaic systems. The various control measures are examined and evaluated. Besides considering voltage control by reactive and active power, also a combination of both measures is investigated.

Aging of fossil generation fleet and high penetrations of variable energy resources (VER) create operating and scheduling challenges for power system operators with reduced generation flexibility and increased variability. One of the key promises of Smart Grid is to enable demand-side resources, including thermal and electric storage, to provide energy balancing and ramping needed to mitigate intermittency impact of VER, especially regulating capacity of the conventional generation fleet *** panel presentation will address operational and technical issues associated with integration of demand response (DR) and distributed energy resources (DER) with power system operations, covering from behind-the-meter DR/DER assets to distribution and transmission grid, retail and wholesale markets. The presentation will cover issues associated with creating energy imbalance and ancillary services from demand response and distributed resources, while considering distribution congestion and wholesale operations. An approach for intra-hour scheduling of dispatchable DR/DER and its coordination with VER operation will be presented. The presentation will also discuss data modeling, information systems and data exchange requirements for coordination between retail and wholesale operations for enrolling, scheduling, monitoring, and control of DR, DER, VER and conventional resources. Transactive methods for "real-time" and end to-end coordination of capabilities will be reviewed.

Efficient regulation of the energy transfer between generating, storage and load subsystems is a topic of current practical interest. A new strategy to achieve this objective, together with its corresponding power electronics implementation, was recently proposed by the authors. The device is called dynamic energy router (DER) because, in contrast with current practice, the regulation of the direction and rate of change of the power flow is done without relying on steady-state considerations. A key assumption for the correct operation of the DER is that dissipation in the system is negligible. Unfortunately, in the presence of dissipation the original DER ceases to be operational. In this paper a new DER that takes into account the presence of losses is proposed. Simulation and experimental evidence of the performance improvement with the new DER are presented.
