Micro grid is a localized grouping of distributed generation, storage system and load, all operating as a single system and providing electric power and heat. It can either operate in parallel to the main grid or in an islanded mode in case of faults in the grid. However, technical challenges of current practices include distribution protection, control and fault diagnosis, protection strategies and load management. This paper demonstrates the development of advanced automated fault detection, diagnosis and protection system and algorithms for the micro grid system using fault semantic network.

Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) have the potential to solve Active Network Management (ANM) problems arising from an increase in Distributed Energy Resources (DER). The aim of this research is to integrate a MAS into an electrical network emulation for the purpose of implementing ANM. Initially an overview of agents and MAS and how their characteristics can be used to control and coordinate an electrical network is presented. An electrical network comprising a real-time emulated transmission network connected to a live DER network controlled and coordinated by a MAS is then constructed. The MAS is then used to solve a simple ANM problem: the control and coordination of an electrical network in order to maintain frequency within operational limits. The research concludes that a MAS is successful in solving this ANM problem and also that in the future the developed MAS can be applied to other ANM problems.

The current upheaval in the electricity sector is leading to distributed generation schemes and new grid structures. At the same time, this change is heading for a paradigm shift in controlling energy resources within the grid. Proactive scheduling of active power within a (from a controlling perspective) loosely coupled group of distributed energy resources demands for distributed optimization methods that take into account the individual feasible region in local search spaces. We propose a method that uses support vector based black-box models for constructing feasible regions for automated, local solution repair during scheduling and combine it with a distributed greedy approach for finding an appropriate partition of a desired target schedule into operable schedules for each participating actor.

An appropriate infrastructure, or generally an appropriate solution does exactly what is needed - not more, not less. The present article systematically reflects the parameters with impact on the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure design. Considering cost and vulnerability of ICT infrastructures, we propose to reconsider the structural parameters of any smart grid system according to the guideline `as local as possible and as central as needed'. The presented comprehensive methodology departs from the primary requirements of distribution system operation. ICT infrastructure must be able to support these primary requirements. Additional services rendered possible by more complex ICT must have a justifiable cost-benefit ratio. Regulatory barriers hampering efficient ICT solutions are identified and improvement suggestions integrated into the design process. Application of the methodology is illustrated with the example of a German rural distribution system as a case study.

The distributed energy resources (DER) contains several technologies, such as diesel engines, small wind turbines, photovoltaic inverters, etc. The control of DER components with storage devices and (controllable) loads, such as batteries, capacitors, dump loads, are central to the concept of the Micro Grids (MGs). A MG can operate interconnected to the main distribution grid or in islanded mode. This paper presents experimental tests for static and dynamic stability analysis carried out in a dedicated laboratory for research in distributed control and micro-grid with a high share of renewable energy production. Moreover to point out, on a laboratory scale, the coupling between DR and storage and to effectively compensate wind fluctuations a number of tests have been done. In order to find out the parameters of various types of DER components for dynamic simulation models a number of tests are required under different operation modes and loads. The testing reporting here includes three modes of operation: stand alone, parallel/hybrid and grid connection.

With the vast increase of distributed energy resources (DER) on utility systems not only due to renewable portfolio standard requirements but also the potential to delay distribution upgrade expenditures, the distribution engineer is confronted with the very challenging task of fulfilling the scope of a system impact study to determine if there exists potential for the DER to create any adverse operational or voltage issues, both now and in the future as system changes occur. Fortunately, there are industry standards and guides that describe how to fulfill the technical study requirements with some step-by-step guidance. The complexity of the system impact study also depends heavily upon the type and size of DER, its operating modes. An all-encompassing study might cover a vast number of areas with just a few of these being voltage and stability analysis, harmonics, transients, distribution system protection, and DER relaying requirements. Predicting PV generation profiles for different seasons and hours of the day rests heavily on the plant design and layout. Ways to determine those load levels will be discussed. Distribution system and PV inverter modeling complexities will be presented, along with why they are important for impact studies. An actual field installation of a large PV plant will be used to evaluate some distribution system impact issues, with a focus on loading scenarios and voltages. Various operating modes of inverters will be discussed with focus on how they may help or hinder the operation of the system. These operating modes and their effects on voltage regulating device interactions will be presented to demonstrate how more commonly used regulator control settings without DER may cause voltage violations with DER.

Uninterrupted power supply is considered to be an important factor in defining a quality supply network. This becomes necessary for maintaining emergent critical load. In this paper, Multi Agent Controller (MAC) has been proposed to maintain the system operational criterions such as the maintenance of voltage and other parameters. This has been implemented in two area network to demonstrate the application of MAC where it maintains the continuity of power in the area subjected to fault. MAC is implemented by using an open source agent building toolkit Java Agent Development framework (JADE). Simulation is carried out in Mat lab environment. Macsimjx has been used to interface the simulink model with Multi Agent System (MAS). Detailed simulation has been carried out during various fault conditions. The results demonstrate the continuity of power supply to the critical loads through Distributed Energy Resource (DER) even in absence of Grid power.

Distributed energy resources (DER) are expected to play a critical role in the near future due to a number of advantages they have compared to conventional centralised power systems. DER systems typically involve many components that combine different technologies for producing and storing electrical energy and heat. Thus, operational optimisation and control of DER systems is a challenging task. In this work, the Model Predictive Control (MPC) rolling horizon approach is adopted to design a control strategy for DER systems. The proposed approach is not limited to single households but addresses DER systems in the neighbourhood level, taking into account the possibility of energy exchange among neighbouring households.

Depth Image Based Rendering (DIBR) is a standard technique in free viewpoint television for rendering virtual camera views. For synthesis it utilizes one or several reference texture images and associated depth images, which contain information about the 3D structure of the scene. Many popular depth estimation methods infer the depth information by considering texture images in pairs. This often leads to severe inconsistencies among multiple reference depth images, resulting in poor rendering quality. We propose a method which takes as input a set of depth images and returns an enhanced depth map to be used for rendering at the virtual viewpoint. Our framework is data-driven and based on a simple geometric multiscale model of the underlying depth. Inconsistencies and errors in the inputted depth images are handled locally using tools from the field of robust statistics. Numerical comparison shows the method outperform standard MPEG DIBR software.

Medium-voltage grid codes for distributed energy resources are rapidly evolving. Next generation grid codes are anticipated to include stringent requirements for fault-ride-through and ancillary services, which is in stark contrast to existing codes formulated based on recommendations from the predominant IEEE Std. 1547-2003. To gain insight into the nature of these requirements, core features of next generation codes are identified based on (i) anticipated developments in North American grid requirements for distributed energy resources, and (ii) dominant features and common trends of emergent European codes. The impact of these core features on distributed energy resources operating collectively within a microgrid framework are addressed.
