In this paper, we propose the depth estimation and view synthesis approaches for the scene rendering of narrow-baseline videos. Depth estimation is performed by global energy minimization using graph cut technique. A novel smoothness energy term is proposed to enforce powerful smoothness of the estimated depth. In view synthesis, smart hole filling is proposed to efficiently remove the burr artifacts along the object boundary. Experimental results show that compared with the MPEG reference software, our method can generate more accurate depth maps and achieve much better objective (PSNR) and subjective quality in view synthesis.

We examine different initializations and their influence on the performances of iterative speaker diarization system. Six methods of initializations were under examination, starting with a naive frame based random initialization, continue with uniform conversation dividing between the clusters and ending with weighted segmental k-means. The initialization methods were tested on two telephone conversation databases: LDC America CallHome and NIST SRE-05. In contrast to most works on meeting and shows where the speakers turns are not very frequent and minimal duration constraints of 2.5 sec or more can be applied to capture speakers statistics, in telephone conversations the speaker turns are much more frequent and the minimum duration should be set to several hundreds of milliseconds. In such cases, good cluster initialization is very important. It will be shown that good initialization using weighted segmental k-means is outperforms all other methods, and the either fixed or minimum duration constraints can be minor, and even without any constraint on the segment duration the results are significantly better than in other initializations.

Performing speaker diarization of a collection of recordings, where speakers are uniquely identified across the database, is a challenging task. In this context, inter-session variability compensation and reasonable computation times are essential to be addressed. In this paper we propose a two-stage system composed of speaker diarization and speaker linking modules that are able to perform data set wide speaker diarization and that handle both large volumes of data and inter-session variability compensation. The speaker linking system agglomeratively clusters speaker factor posterior distributions, obtained within the Joint Factor Analysis framework, that model the speaker clusters output by a standard speaker diarization system. Therefore, the technique inherently compensates the channel variability effects from recording to recording within the database. A threshold is used to obtain meaningful speaker clusters by cutting the dendrogram obtained by the agglomerative clustering. We show how the Hotteling t-square statistic is an interesting distance measure for this task and input data, obtaining the best results and stability. The system is evaluated using three subsets of the AMI corpus involving different speaker and channel variabilities. We use the within-recording and across-recording diarization error rates (DER), cluster purity and cluster coverage to measure the performance of the proposed system. Across-recording DER as low as within-recording DER are obtained for some system setups.

The main goal of active distribution network operation is the minimization of system cost given by the sum of the costs of energy losses, curtailed energy, reactive support, shed energy, and storage operation. The paper focuses on the use of Distributed Energy Storage, showing that suitable OPF algorithms embedded in the Distribution Management System increase the hosting capacity of distribution system without jeopardizing reliability and minimizing the operation costs. Costs and benefits of energy storage are compared with other no-network solutions and the impact on the efficiency of power delivery is deeply discussed with reference to a small real world case study.

Normal operation of an active distribution network (ADN) requires simultaneous optimization of different objectives of the various involved actors. This results in a multi-objective optimization problem which has not yet been treated completely. This paper considers a particular relationship between commercial and technical coordination, involving capacity management of the distribution network. First, the market-based ADN, its actors and their objectives are described. An agent-based approach is desirable to handle the complexity of this ADN. Then, several technical issues for integrating capacity management within a multi-agent market-based ADN are pointed out. After that, the developed agent architecture and coordination mechanism are further elaborated upon, along with a formulation of the multi-objective optimization problem. Finally, a decentralized approach for integrating capacity management is introduced and demonstrated.

This paper presents analytical and simulative traffic engineering models for Smart Grid communication processes in cellular networks. In order to dimension ICT networks for a decentralized and automated Smart Grid infrastructure, a detailed analysis of the expected data volume and required data rate for Smart Metering Services, Demand and Supply Side Management as well as Monitoring Services is needed. Based upon different wireless infrastructure scenarios applying different technology approaches, a comparison between traffic models using stochastic and deterministic inter-arrival times is presented. In order to validate the usability and capability of the proposed stochastic and deterministic models, analytical and simulative methods are compared. The stochastic method is based on a multidimensional Markovian model, whereas the deterministic system is described by a novel analytical approach based on the Network Calculus. The results show different key performance indicators of wireless technology approaches using GPRS, UMTS and LTE within different traffic scenarios and reflect the expected Smart Grid traffic volume, which needs to be taken into account for future network deployments. The performed analysis determines the impact of the Smart Grid services on common speech and data traffic in cellular networks as well as the expected influence of additional network load caused by Smart Grid applications.

Distribution level modeling or monitoring has not been of primary concerns of the utility companies so far, because traditionally the electric power is delivered unidirectional from distribution substations to the customers. Meanwhile, integrating Distributed Energy Resources (DER) into the distribution feeders and contribution of the customers in demand response and other aspects of the future smart grid is starting to push system planners, utility companies and researchers to build unabridged and detailed model of the distribution feeders even down to home appliances level. GridLAB-D™ and Open-DSS are both open source software tools, designed for modeling distribution level power systems. Design and development of multiple algorithms for peak shaving, arbitrage, load shifting and smoothing scenarios is of major concerns. We show that very promising results in terms of modeling future smart grid and various possibilities are expected.

This paper describes a communication concept in distribution network with dispersed energy resources (DER), which regulates and controls voltage profile in the power network. The communication concept is based on fast links between checkpoints on power lines and on DER. Advantage of this concept is establishing communication among all DER, main power lines and control center, which allows them to communicate with each other at any given time without any restrictions. Another advantage of the proposed communication concept involves possibility of upgrading to the existing standard IEC 61850.

With the increasing penetration of distributed generation (DG) in distribution systems and the concern of energy efficiency, the nexus between electrical and water systems is becoming more apparent and strengthened via combined heat and power (CHP). This paper investigates the nexus between DG penetration and urban water infrastructure. The AC optimal power flow (ACOPF) based optimization model is used to assess DG capacity and determinate DG location. The IEEE 123-bus distribution test system is selected as the test bed and the corresponding water distribution network is developed based on the system cost minimization to constrain the thermal output utilized by water and to check node pressure head. The results indicate which bus in the system is suitable to place a DER and the capacity that can be accommodated by the system. Finally, the nodal pressures of water system are checked to see if the existing water distribution system could support the large penetration of DG.

New problems concerning the distribution grid protection system arise from the large diffusion of installed distributed energy resources. In particular, unwanted trips, unwanted island operations and worsening of power quality are the main issues coming from the interactions among active networks and grid protections. A possible new protection scheme, which can be employed in active networks, is proposed and discussed in the paper. Logic selectivity is implemented introducing communications among grid and distributed generator systems protections. Digital simulations confirm the suitability of the proposed solution for a large set of grid faults.
