For reliable event detection in wireless sensor networks, a sink requires collective information reported by sensor nodes sensing an event. In other words, the sink has to receive a certain amount of data dealing with the event for reliable event detection. Existing studies propose quantity-based event reliability protocols that improve event reliability by increasing the number of data successfully transmitted by controlling transport process. These studies present diverse schemes to successfully transmit as many reporting data as possible such as diversification of routing path for congestion avoidance and control of data reporting frequency rate for transport error compensation. However, since it frequently happens that wireless sensor networks with restricted capacity cannot deliver more than required amount of data due to data collision and congestion, the quantity-based event reliability protocols have limitation to raise the possibility of event detection. In this paper, we proposes a Quality-based Event Reliability Protocol (QERP) utilizing a property that the reporting data from sensor nodes are different in the contribution degree (CD) for event detection according to their environmental conditions. QERP selects sensor nodes to send their reporting data according to CD, and differentially transports them by CD-based buffer management and load balancing. Simulation results show that QERP detect more reliably and energy-efficiently an event than quantity-based event reliability protocols.

Distributed energy resources (DERs) such as micro turbine, wind turbine, fuel cell, photovoltaic system and so on, which are high-efficient, high quality and high reliable electrical sources, are been able to create flexible control on power generation during the islanded mode operation of micro grid by power-electronic interface. Performances of two types of inverter controller (PQ controller and VSI controller) show the important role of each model in balancing and power sharing within the islanded network. PQ controller prepares constant active power at specified power factor and VSI controller regulates frequency and voltage through system. This paper is prepared to model two kinds of controller and then investigated the role of controllers through changing load demand and output power of DERs during the islanded network. Moreover appropriate method for handling DERs such as PQ and VSI controller will be proposed in a simulation program which is developed using MATLAB ® for one case study. The results are shown and compared in an abbreviated manner.

The electric utility industry is investing significantly in multiple Distributed Energy Resources (DER) technologies including renewable, distributed generation, smart metering infrastructure, home energy smart devices and automation systems. Such investments are expected to encourage active engagement of end customers and distributed resources resulting into overall cost savings and greener environment. This fast voluminous growth of DER assets at different voltage levels on the electric distribution grid poses unique challenges and opportunities to grid operations. This paper describes a new paradigm for developing DER market models for advanced distribution grid operations enabled through a new generation of information and communications technology. Such models and associated algorithms illustrate the possibility of various novel approaches for significant incremental value additions to the DER asset investment. The paper concludes with the issues, risks and challenges in the proposed market model implementation.

Microplasma technology was used in many applications from biomedical to surface treatment of polymers. A new application could be surface treatment of glass panels for the electronic industry in order to improve the surface wettability. The technology which we propose is remote microplasma method. It can be easily applied as an industrial process due to the relatively low discharge voltage around 1 kV and a small size of the reactor. This paper presents the surface treatment by microplasma of glass using Ar, and mixtures of Ar with N 2 and O 2 . Microplasma process was analyzed be emission spectroscopy method. A Marx generator with MOSFET switches, a neon transformer and a pulse power supply were used to energize the electrodes. The emission spectra were measured by an ICCD camera and a spectrometer. An optic fiber was used to have an accurate measurement of a small part of microplasma discharge. Surface wettability of glass was confirmed measuring contact angle before and after the microplasma treatment. The surface of glass was modified due to the action of the radicals and active species generated by microplasma. Emission spectrum of microplasma discharge in Ar and mixtures of Ar with N 2 and O 2 showed Ar I peaks, OH peaks, N 2 second positive band system peaks and N 2 first positive band system peaks.

Future powers system is considering huge flux of information flow due to increase in Renewable Energy Sources. Due to the limited monitoring and management of SCADA systems, inclusion of DER at local distribution level is a challenging task for the Smart Grid. We discuss the non-functional requirement aspects and their implication in trustworthy systems. The paper also illustrates an engineering approach towards trustworthy ICT systems. We present a use case about Injection/Curtailment of DER in distributed network. Further, we argue the importance of Service Level Agreements as coordination tool for information exchange between DSO and DER for the provisioning of trustworthy services. Finally conclude that modeling of SLA using Multi Agent Systems is a viable approach towards Trustworthy future Smart Grid applications.

Variability and uncertainty are intrinsic characteristics of power systems. On the other hand, high penetration of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), especially variable output generations such as winds and photovoltaic systems, exceeds the expected variability and uncertainty of a power system. In this situation, the integration of a DER portfolio can be done following the concept of aggregation of these resources. If several DER units are linked together and are operated as one unit this concept is often called a Virtual Power Plant (VPP). The aim of this paper is to carry out an optimal dispatch that the operator of a VPP is able to maximize its profit in consideration of the relevant technical and economical constraints as well as some existing uncertainties. The profit maximization problem also considers demand side bidding for dispatchable loads, Renewable Obligation Certificate (ROC) for renewable based Distributed Generations (DGs) and the cost related to Use of System (UoS) charges to Distribution System Operator (DSO). The simulation results for a typical system demonstrate the effectiveness of the method.

The optimization task in many virtual power plant (VPP) scenarios comprises the search for appropriate schedules in search spaces from distributed energy resources. In scenarios with a decoupling of plant modeling and plant control, these search spaces are distributed as well. If merely the controller unit of a plant knows about the subset of operable schedules that are allowed to be considered by the central scheduling unit, then these sets have to be effectively communicated. We discuss an approach of learning the envelope that separates operable from non-operable schedules inside the space of all schedules by means of support vector data description. Then, only the comparatively small set of support vectors has to be transmitted as a classifier for distinguishing schedules during optimization. We applied this approach to simulated VPP.

Modern distribution systems are implemented through micro grids: small power networks where generation is close to consumption and ICT supports the coordinated management of the different energy resources. In such systems, the central control unit manages energy dispatch from the different sources according to different criteria (technical, economical and environmental) and takes care of tertiary regulation. Such optimization for the tertiary regulation is performed with a time interval that typically is of 24 hours. This is due to the fact that it is necessary to take into account the charge and discharge cycles of storage systems. On the other hand, such long time leads to large errors in the prediction of energy generation and consumption. In this paper an algorithmic approach allows to overcome this problem. It is indeed possible to integrate uncertainty within the problem formulation attaining a dispatch plan for all the energy sources that will not lead to constraints violations even if the objective function's variables and parameters are affected by uncertainty. The results on a medium size system show the ease and effectiveness of the proposed approach.

In this paper a typical microgrid is modeled and simulated based on several logical assumptions and the same is studied for steady and transient state analysis in grid connected and islanded mode with critical and non-critical load selectivity in the perspective of integration of distributed energy resources. The authors present the simulation of microgrid by Powergui interfacing of Simulink using Matlab software in such a manner that a study of waveforms of voltage, current and power in selective points in the microgrid system is possible. Since microgrid is an interconnected system of distributed energy resources, utility grid and loads; there are immense chances of fluctuation of any one of those components and the disturbances are to be analyzed through simulation in planning stage for successful on-site operation in future. Among many factors and type of disturbances and response, as a typical case, the present microgrid model is studied for step change in grid voltage and the corresponding response in the line currents are presented with their waveforms showing peak responses, settling time, rise time etc. using LTI viewer toolbox of Simulink, Matlab. The results are discussed and analyzed for microgrid modeling in the perspective of integration of DERs.

This paper presents symmetrical component frame power system models for smart grid application. The improvements in power system models are introduced by using dummy lines and dummy nodes in handling multi-phase feeders, incorporation of a centre-tapped transformer loads and the inclusion of weather-related DER models. The dummy lines and dummy nodes approach converted the two-phase and single-phase line segments into virtual three-phase lines and hence eliminate the need to use forward/backward method in handle multi-phase laterals. The DER models that have been considered are cogeneration, photovoltaic (PV) and wind turbine generation (WTG). These improvements are suitable for steady-state analysis application with a more comprehensive modeling of ADS and smart grid. Sample testing of the models on fault analysis, load flow analysis and DER impact study is presented to illustrate the proposed models effectiveness and performance improvement.
