Micro-cogeneration units are expected to penetrate the domestic boiler market soon especially in countries with extensive gas network. A high penetration level can lead to problems in passive designed LV networks. The voltage rise across the distribution lines, due to the reverse power flow, seems to be the main limiting factor on the amount of μ-CHPs connected to the LV grid. Meshed networks are believed to incorporate higher level of distributed generators compared to radial networks. However, the possibility of μ-CHPs to operate under different control strategies will also enhance their penetration level and facilitate their integration in a Virtual Power Plant concept. This is shown by steady state simulations performed in a Dutch LV network. The scope of this paper is to illustrate how the network topology and the control strategy of μ-CHPs affect their maximum penetration level and how they can be integrated in a Virtual Power Plant.

Whenever there is a collision involving several transmitted packets, the traditional approach for MAC (Medium Access Control) protocols is to discard all packets involved and request their retransmission, with a consequent loss in the overall throughput. Based on conventional Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) techniques, a multipacket detector for OFDM schemes (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) which does not discard the packets involved in a collision has been recently proposed. One of the major problems in resolving collisions using the multipacket detector is to discover how many and which users were transmitting. In this paper we will present a method to solve this problem.

This paper discusses the interfering signal detection technique for DAA (Detection And Avoidance) operation of an UWB (Ultra Wideband) systems. To detect the interfering signal, sub-band pulses of a multi-carrier type are prepared as template waveform in the detector. The received signal is correlated with the sub-band pulses and the correlation values are compared with the threshold value. The proposed detection technique is applied for the correlation detection that is often used for the demodulation scheme of the pulse-based UWB system. The DER (Detection Error Rate) and FAR (False Alarm Rate) performance are evaluated to show the effectiveness of the proposed interfering signal detection technique and the performances are compared with the ordinary scheme by using FFT. The optimum sub-band pulse width is also derived to be obtained better detection performance.

This paper applies the hosting-capacity method to a realistic distribution system. Under given circumstances the hosting capacity for Distributed Energy Resources (DER) identifies the degree of DER in power grid that can be accepted without endangering the reliability or quality of power. In this case study two limits setting the hosting capacity were evaluated: overvoltage and overcurrent. Finally it is examined to what extent the hosting capacity can be increased with use of real-time information and calculation of dynamic performance indications that govern the hosting capacity. It is shown that there is significant potential for increasing the hosting capacity without having to build new lines.

This paper describes a methodology for making robust day-ahead operational schedules for controllable residential distributed energy resources (DER) using a novel energy service decision support tool. The tool is based on the consumers deriving benefit from energy services and not on electric energy. It maximizes consumer net benefit by scheduling the operation of DER. The robust schedule is derived using a stochastic programming approach formulated for the DER scheduler: the objective function describing the consumer net benefit is maximized over a set of scenarios that model the range of uncertainty. The optimal scenario set is derived using heuristic scenario reduction techniques. robust operational schedules are formulated for a `smart' home case study with four controllable DER under stochastic energy service demand, availability of storage DER, and status of dynamic peak pricing. The robust schedule results in a lower expected cost but at the expense of long computation times. The computation period however is not much of a disadvantage because schedules are computed off-line. The consumer can prepare several DER schedules and simply choose the one to implement according to their perception of the coming day. The robust schedules are formulated using an improved version of co-evolutionary particle swarm optimization.

This paper compared ACF(Auto Correlation Feature) characteristics for ZCD, Kasami and Golay codes. Sequence codes have been used as a spreading sequence in order to overcome ICI(Inter Code Interference) caused by transmitter and MPI(Multiple Path Interference) in receiver. In this paper, we abstracted characteristics of each spreading code and analyzed the properties of them.

This paper describes the management system to control, monitor and supervisory of renewable energy resources, energy storages and loads. System can also be implemented as management controller for local grid, which may cooperates with distribution networks. The system uses real-time Ethernet technology, which combined with a fast signal processor allows to perform a complex analysis of the network and to control local loads and distributed energy resources. Extensive communication protocols and low cycle time provide technical mean to control whole microgrid, Virtual Power Plant and communicate with distribution network operators.

This paper investigates the control strategies for distributed energy resources (DERs), including diesel generators, energy storage and demand response (DR), to achieve high penetration of wind energy in a rural microgrid. In such a system, it could be both economical and environmentally friendly to harness wind power and displace the consumption of fossil fuels. In the study, energy storage and DR are used to contain frequency deviations and reduce diesel generators' movement, while maximizing the use of wind energy. Detailed dynamic models of DERs and household loads are built to simulate the microgrid. Combinations of centralized (direct control) and decentralized (autonomous response) control strategies on DERs are implemented. The control capabilities of each type of DERs are also explored under different scenarios. The system responses under high wind speeds and to large disturbances are tested. Results show that coordinated DR and energy storage can effectively compensate for wind variability as well as provide desired frequency response. This consequently reduces the movements of diesel generators and thereby the amount of mechanical stress.

This paper presents a solution for integrating Electrical Vehicles in the Smart Grid through unbundled Smart Metering and Virtual Power Plant technology dealing with multiple objectives. Within this frame, EV can benefit of cost-effective energy during the charging period but can also provide multiple ancillary services to the network, by wisely using their storage capability and their flexibility in coupling to the grid. Simulation of an EV providing services under a multi-objective VPP is also presented, with analysis and conclusions about the technical feasibility of such applications.
