EPRI's Smart Grid Demonstration Initiative is focused on collaborating with electric utilities around the world and helping to advance the industry in regards to integrating Distributed Energy Resources (DER). An important aspect of these demonstration projects is the evolution of a smart distribution systems making integration of DER possible. A wide variety of factors play into every electric utilities strategy on deploying smart grid technologies including regulatory environment, age and functionality of existing assets, communication infrastructure, geography, reliability, cost to implement, and associated benefits. What appears to be a common technology implementation is actually very unique from one utility to the next and is therefore very important that the industry shares knowledge and lessons learned to help advance the industry. This paper provides several examples of integration approaches and early project results along with information on how to keep aware of the project status through 2014.

Splitting a speech signal into speakers is the main goal of a speaker diarization system, which has become an important building block in many speech processing algorithms. Current state of the art systems are able to obtain good diarization error rates, but most of them are rather slow, which is a strong handicap in applications that require overall faster than real-time processing. In this paper we present a novel speaker diarization system which is built following a bottom-up agglomerative clustering approach and based on speaker binary keys, recently proposed for speaker modeling. After initialization, processing is entirely done over binary vectors and using exclusively binary metrics, which makes the system very fast. On tests performed using all conference meetings datasets released for the NIST RT evaluation campaigns we achieve diarization error rates just slightly worse than a classic acoustic-based system while running over 10 times faster.

This paper proposes distributed algorithms for control and coordination of loads and distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution networks. These algorithms are relevant for load curtailment control in demand response programs, and also for coordination of DERs for provision of ancillary services. Both the distributed load-curtailment and DER coordination problems can be cast as distributed resource allocation problems with constraints on resource capacity. We focus on linear iterative algorithms in which each resource j maintains a set of values that is updated to be a weighted linear combination of the resource's own previous set of values and the previous sets of values of its neighboring resources. This set of values can be used by each node to determine its own contribution to load curtailment or to resource request.

The extensive use of converter-interfacing distributed energy resources (DER), combined with a large amount of nonlinear and unbalanced loads connected to the distribution power system, has led to power quality problem. This paper proposes a control strategy for a three-phase four-leg multi-functional converter which can compensate reactive power, harmonic currents, unbalance, and neutral current simultaneously under distorted voltage conditions, besides the active power exchange. The capacity of the converter is taken into account. The proposed control strategy based on synchronous reference frame (SRF) for multi-functional converter is described. Simulation and hardware in the loop real time test results carried on a three-phase four-wire distributed generation system illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

Solid state transformer (SST) is a bi-directional electricity exchange device that is proposed to accommodate widespread Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and Distributed Energy Storages (DESs) into the existing distribution systems. IEC 61850 is the leading standard for power system communications and affords the integration of devices of different types into the system. It is important to have models of all devices which are used in distribution networks. It is obvious that SST has to be modeled with IEC 61850 in order to support its incorporation with DERs and DESs to the distribution system. In this paper a model of a SST and its mapping to IEC 61850 is presented. Existing logical nodes and their use are considered and a new logical node is also introduced.

Nowadays a virtual power plant (VPP) represents an aggregation of distributed energy resources (DER) and may include controllable loads as well as storage devices [1]. This concept is considered as a promising technology to allocate energy and redirect power flow in the distribution network. In addition, its ICT infrastructure can be deployed to the transition of passive distribution network towards active network [2]. On the other hand it is possible to make use of the available ICT infrastructure which belongs to established smart grid functions to create VPPs. Furthermore, as shown in previous work [3], the VPP system can cope with operational problems caused by high penetration level of DER in the distribution network. However, while the virtual power plant concept is considered as a promising technology to manage large numbers of DER, the establishment of such a system might liberate several challenges to its developer. This work focuses on providing options for the development and operation of the VPP system considering major technical, regulatory and socio-economical challenges. These options are mainly based on studies and experiences which are obtained during the development of a VPP pilot by a distribution network operator in the Netherlands. The main objectives of this pilot are to develop and test the balancing and network services as well as energy trade provided by the VPP system. Based on the methodology and techniques of Systems Engineering a scalable, traceable and modular VPP system is achieved. This methodology is also found effective during the definition of needed `VPP pilot'-tests which are related to the requirements of the VPP stakeholders..

In this paper, a framework of sporadic noise detection and cancellation is proposed. To improve the intelligence of sporadic noise detection, the difference residual detective signal-based detection algorithm is proposed. For performance evaluation, missing and false error rates, and speech recognition rates are measured. The results show remarkable performance improvement.

Future Smart Grids have to meet high expectations from our societies on improved energy efficiency and sustainability. However, system uptake and acceptance will to a large extent depend on the perceived trust by different stakeholders. In the paper we address issues related to engineering of trustworthy systems. This type of Engineering will be grounded in reliable models of interoperability. A key issue is here interoperability of information exchange and sharing. Based on analysis of trust concerns, we propose a model of coordinating and monitoring by Service Level Agreements (SLAs) between stakeholders to ensure trustworthiness of system performance and behavior. We illustrate our methods on case related to trustworthy inclusion of DERs in Smart Grids.

As micro-combined heat and power (micro-CHP) systems move towards mass deployment together with other kinds of distributed energy resources (DER), an increasing emphasis has been placed on how to coordinate such a large diversified DER portfolio in an efficient way by the Virtual Power Plant (VPP) like aggregators. Compared to the centralized direct control scheme, a decentralized control scheme “control-by-price” is proposed for the VPP operation. The corresponding scheme has advantages in scalability, transparency and simplicity. In this context, a short term economic analysis is conducted for three different micro-CHP systems to investigate the feasibility of being controlled by price. Such analysis is relevant for both controller designs for micro-CHP systems and VPP related operations. The results indicate that controlling the micro-CHP systems by price is feasible but could result in jumpy responses.

From the initial days of establishment of power system in the late 20 century up to now, no fundamental improvement has been taken place in power distribution systems; on the other hand many innovations have taken place in both demand and generation sides of power systems. These innovations have introduced new requirements which electric grids should be able to support. The majority of these innovations have held during recent decades. All these have made conventional electric grids somehow deficient. Our aim of this presentation is to develop the next generation of electric grids which fulfills conventional grids and support all new requirements. So at first we investigate innovations and also new requirements which conventional electric grids are not able to support. Then we obtain semantics which next generation of electric grids should be able to support. For implementation of these semantics some infrastructures should be developed, the result is obtaining required pragmatic functions. Finally we investigate achievements. These achievements satisfy the requirements that we introduced firstly which today's grids should be able to support.
