This study considers potential system effects from the addition of Plug-in Electric Vehicle (PEV) load to individually metered residential customers together with a concurrent market adoption of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and energy storage technologies to offset the associated load growth. To evaluate various renewable energy source conditions, a prototypical circuit is evaluated in Detroit, Los Angeles, and Orlando locations for both summer and winter loading conditions. Various load adoption scenarios are simulated by randomly assigning specified loading to target customer classes on the circuit.

This paper describes various smart grid concepts, architectures, and details of associated technological demonstrations implemented worldwide. The survey is based on initiatives taken by EU and IEA (e.g. ETP, EEGI, EERA and IEA DSM) and description of projects conducted in Europe and US (e.g. FENIX, ADDRESS, EU-DEEP, ADINE, GridWise and SEESGEN-ICT). The report presents drivers, visions and roadmaps to develop smart grids worldwide including China and India. The survey encompasses various smart grid concepts, i.e. development of virtual power plant, active demand in consumer networks, DER aggregation business, active distribution network, and ICT applications to develop intelligent future grids. The comparison is carried out on the basis of commercial, technological, and regulatory aspects. In addition, the existing features of smart grid technology and challenges faced to implement it in Finish environment are addressed. As a matter of fact, the implementation of smart grid is consisting of more than any one technology, therefore, this transition will not be so easy. In the end, a fully realized smart grid will be beneficial to all the stakeholders. Smart grid will be an outcome of an evolutionary development of the existing electricity networks towards an optimized and sustainable energy system.

This paper investigates the technical feasibility of a smart microgrid that includes (i) exportable vehicle power system (EVPS) units, (ii) Auxiliary Power Supply (APU) units, and (iii) utility distribution system. The Cognitive Power Management (CPM) of the microgrid is introduced based on the availability of communications, to optimize operation of the overall microgird system in terms of fuel consumption. The CPM uses CAN based communications and forms the “intelligence” of the microgrid. The primary objective of this study is to provide strategies for the local and global optimal fuel consumption of the combined EVPS and APU units. To highlight the salient performance features of the cognitive microgrid, a comparison between a conventional microgrid control strategy and the cognitive power management based microgird is also performed.

The electric power system is an enabling infrastructure that supports the operation of other critical infrastructures and thus the economic well being of the nation. It is therefore very important to design a smart grid for resiliency and autonomous re-configurability in the electric power grid. For the operation of any power system, its control architecture consisting of hardware and software protocols is very essential for exchanging system status and control signals. This is accomplished by Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems. Current trends to control and monitor the operation of electric power systems are however moving towards the use of an automated agent technology using a multi-agent system which replaces SCADA system. The objective of this paper is to design and model a multiagent system which consists of Distributed Energy Resource (DER) agent, Data Base agent, Control agent and User agent. DER agent is modeled using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simulation results presented in this paper show the seamless transition from grid connected to an island mode when upstream outages are detected. This denotes the capability of a multi-agent system as a technology for managing the microgrid operation.

Electrical power consumption is increasing day by day, complicating the operation of distribution systems. Distributed Energy Resource (DER) integration in distribution system is one of the options which give benefits like loss minimization, peak shaving, over load relieving and improved reliability. This paper presents an algorithm for optimal placement and size of the DER considering system loss minimization and voltage profile improvement as objective functions. This work is tested on IEEE 15, 33, 69 and 85 bus distribution systems. For all cases studied, a new heuristic optimization technique Shuffled Frog Leaping algorithm (SFLA) is applied and current injection based distribution load flow method is employed. Further the results are compared with those results obtained by Particle swarm optimization (PSO) method and found to be encouraging.

A significant increase in photovoltaic (PV) system installations is expected to come on line in the near future and as the penetration level of PV increases, the effect of PV may no longer be considered minimal. One of the most important attributions of additional PV is what effect this may have on protection systems. Protection engineers design protection systems to safely eliminate faults from the electric power system. One of the new technologies recently introduced into the electric power system are distributed energy resources (DER). Currently, inverter-based DER contributes very little to the power balance on all but a few utility distribution systems. As DER become prevalent in the distribution system, equipment rating capability and coordination of protection systems merit a closer investigation. A collaborative research effort between the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Southern California Edison (SCE) involved laboratory short-circuit testing single-phase (240 VAC) residential type (between 1.5 and 7kW) inverters. This paper will reveal test results obtained from these short-circuit tests.

Increased penetration of distributed energy resources (DER) and large-scale deployment of renewable energy sources are challenging the entire architecture of traditional power system. Microgrid, featuring higher flexibility and reliability, becomes an attractive candidate for the configuration of future electrical power system. This paper gives an overview of DER units in the grid interactive ac microgrid. The options in structures and control methods of power electronics interfaced DER units are described. Instantaneous load sharing strategies among DER units in the islanded microgrid operations are discussed pointing out the importance of closed loop system output impedance for the power electronics interfaced DER units.

Multiobjective optimization has been applied to the problem of optimal energy management in power distribution systems. Future distribution systems with increased deployment of distributed energy storage devices and distributed energy resources are being designed under the aegis of a number of sectors of the power engineering community. This includes the National Science Foundation supported Future Renewable Electric Energy Distribution Management (FREEDM) center. A technical roadmap for the FREEDM center distribution system is proposed that is based on multiobjective optimization. Diverse objectives in the optimal control of the distribution energy management system are handled through a Pareto optimal approach. The normal boundary intersection method is used to develop a Pareto optimal front and solving the multiobjective optimization subroutine has been approached through separable programming techniques. Uncertainty in load demand and distributed resource power output are incorporated in the test cases studied to formulate a robust algorithm for distribution energy management. The paper also makes brief reference to the Smart Grid and its objectives - and how the proposed distribution energy management fits into this initiative.

Unbalance radial active distribution network (URADN) is the combination of unbalance radial distribution network and distributed energy resources (DERs) such as micro sources, wind turbines, fuel cell, photovoltaic system, etc. Regarding to unbalance structure, different kinds of DERs models and bidirectional power flow, some network parameters such as amplitude voltage, percent unbalance voltage, and power losses of network will alter accordingly. The complexity of URADN will be more when different kinds of DERs are allocated. So investigating the behavior of DER models in URADN is necessary. A suitable power flow analysis will provide a platform to analyze these behaviors in steady state condition. This paper offers suitable models for URADN components such as loads, lines, DERs and so on according to their structure and operation. Moreover appropriate method for handling DERs such as PV and PQ nodes will be proposed in a Power flow program which is developed using MATLAB ® for two practical case studies. The results are shown and compared in an abbreviated manner.

Distributed Generation (DG), has started becoming a reality in electricity networks. This analysis focuses more on a specific configuration of networks with DG, the Microgrid. Microgrids can operate in a coordinated way either interconnected to an upstream distribution network or autonomously in case of faults in the upstream medium voltage network, like the power systems of physical islands. Under this concept, the potential benefits for the upstream network can be significant in terms of both losses avoidance and emissions reduction. This analysis focuses on ways of evaluating these benefits on a group of typical microgrids. Especially for emissions impact assessment, the seasonal variation of the DG production is taken into account. This variation can also have significant impact on the losses reduction. Results from the application of the described approach to a typical LV Microgrid interconnected to an actual MV network using actual market prices and realistic operational costs of DG taking also into account different configuration of topology for one of the DG units.
