Distributed Energy Resources (DER) are recognized as one of the possible solutions for sustainable economic development. The optimal integration of DER is a multi-objective problem in which different technical and economical objectives must be achieved simultaneously, and where a compromise solution for different perspectives needs to be found. The stochastic nature of DER and demand increases the complexity of the problem. Advanced multi-objective planning methods with appropriate probabilistic models of DER are required. This paper presents a multi-objective analysis of the optimal integration of wind turbines. The analysis is based on the Strength Pareto Evolutionary algorithm 2 (SPEA2) and considers technical and economical planning objectives. The unpredictable nature of DER production and demand is evaluated by means of stochastic simulation. Practical aspects of the framework's implementation are discussed, including the formulation of probabilistic constraints. Results demonstrate that the multi-objective approach proposed produces valuable information for different stakeholders involved in DER planning and development.

This study presents a fast speaker clustering method based on multidimensional scaling. Speech segments are trained as initial acoustic models. MDS is utilized to transform acoustic models to a space with the coordinate best preserve the distances or dissimilarity between models. Speaker clusters are clustered using vector quantization on the MDS coordinates and the acoustic speaker models are trained on MFCCs features for each cluster. Experimental results show the proposed method outperforms the baseline speaker clustering method in lower execution time.

The interaction of customer network equipment and utility operations is an area of growing interest in the industry. There is significant potential for customers to be able to make energy choices that better suit their needs, both financially and to support societal goals important to them, such as those related to encouraging renewable generation or reducing carbon emissions. Similarly, utilities have potentially significant opportunities to reduce demand, lower emissions, manage local demand restrictions on equipment, and improve facility utilization. Significant effort is being put into defining the requirements (i) for the residential customer's home area network (HAN) and (ii) for market-based quantities, like price and schedule. However, work is just beginning to define how the information flows from the customer and markets will affect information systems in the utility operations enterprise. This paper discusses a potential structure for handling enterprise integration in utility operations and discusses steps that the MultiSpeak ® Initiative is taking to develop standardized data objects and services to support these needs.

This paper presents a hierarchical structure for fault detection and fault-tolerant control of distributed energy resources (DERs). The structure consists of distributed monitoring and control systems that perform local fault diagnosis and control system reconfiguration, together with a supervisor that communicates with the local controllers and provides high-level oversight and contingency measures in the event that local fault recovery is not possible. To realize this structure, an observer-based output feedback controller is initially designed for each DER to regulate its output in the absence of faults. The design accounts explicitly for practical implementation issues such as measurement sampling and plant-model mismatch. Fault detection is performed by comparing the output of the observer with that of the DER, and using the discrepancy as a residual. An explicit characterization of the minimum allowable sampling rate that guarantees both closed-loop stability and residual convergence in the absence of faults is obtained and used as the basis for deriving (1) a time-varying threshold on the residual which can be used to detect faults for a given sampling period, and (2) controller reconfiguration laws that determine the feasible fall-back control configurations that preserve stability. Finally, the design and implementation of the fault detection and fault-tolerant control architecture are demonstrated using a simulated model of a solid oxide fuel cell plant.

Microgrids are low voltage distribution networks comprising various distributed generators, storage devices and controllable loads. Microgrid can be operated in interconnected mode or islanded mode. Optimal generation scheduling is one of the microgrid energy management system's function for optimizing the microgrid operation. This paper presents a Multi-Agent System (MAS) for generation scheduling of a microgrid. The proposed MAS architecture has different types of agents such as micro source controller agent, load controller agent, storage agent, and microgrid controller agent. Micro source controller agent that models corresponding distributed energy source such as photovoltaic, wind turbine and distributed generators, maximizes its power production subject to production cost and unit's constraints. Load controller agent that represents corresponding controllable load in the system, is capable to do demand side management techniques. The main goal of this paper is to develop a distributed MAS for generation scheduling and monitoring of energy resources for optimized microgrid operation. The MAS was successfully developed in JADE, which is a well-known FIPA compliant open source multi-agent platform.

In the present paper, authors presents a value-based comparative analysis between electrical thermal demand tracking modes of operations at the planning stage from owner's point of view. Worth of operational strategy is evaluated using maximization of net present value (NPV) of 6-bus meshed and 14-bus radial microgrids which are assessed from optimal deployment their DERs with respect to optimal locations, optimal sizes and types. Loss sensitivity index (LSI) method is used to select optimal locations, whereas optimal sizes and its categorization into micro-turbines and diesel generators are done using particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique with an object of maximization of NPV of microgrid. Internal rate of return (IRR) and payback period (PP) of the microgrid are used as additional decision-making tools.

Continuous connection of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) technology on a “fit and forget” basis may lead to inefficiently low utilization of generation and network assets. In order to mitigate this effect, a reappraisal of the technical, regulatory, and commercial frameworks that shape decisions on future network design, investment, operation, and pricing are required. The transition of distribution network operation from passive to active would facilitate cost effective integration of DER and an efficient evolution towards a low carbon electricity system. In this context, this paper summarizes the results from a range of quantitative studies on the UK electricity system that have been carried out to assess the benefits of active management of distribution networks.

The sets of feasible load schedules that distributed energy resources are able to operate, jointly define the search space within many virtual power plant optimization tasks. If a centralized approach is considered, a central, single scheduling unit needs to know for each energy resource what schedules comply with all given constraints, because only these are operable and might be taken into account for optimization. As many constraints depend on state or time, sets of currently operable alternatives have repeatedly to be communicated to the scheduler in order to avoid central modeling of each single resource. We here present a support vector based approach for learning a highly efficient geometric representation of the space of feasible alternatives for operable schedules. This description is communicated to the scheduler and the encoded information implicitly contains all constraints and therefore makes their modeling dispensable at scheduler side.

Dose enhancements in the vicinity of different high Z (HZ) materials in radiation therapy (RT) are studied by several groups. In this work, extensive and systematic Monte Carlo (MC) studies were performed with Geant4 toolkit focusing on factors that influence the dose enhancements, including the atomic number of HZ materials, the concentration of the HZ material, and the X-ray energies. Gold (Au), Platinum (Pt), Gadolinium (Gd), and Iodine (I) are used in the study. A new method has been implemented to determine the individual contributions from pair production, Compton scattering and the photoelectric effect to the total dose. The dose enhancement ratios (DERs) and their contributions to the overall dose deposition are calculated for these processes. It is also shown in the study that with fixed X-ray energy and molar concentration, the DERs for these HZ materials are approximately linear proportional to their Z number. The DER increases linearly with HZ concentration; however, the slope of the increase depends on the X-ray energies. Analysis of the DERs from different processes reveals an interesting phenomenon: although the contribution from the photoelectric effect to the overall dose enhancement for X-rays in the MeV range is low, being normally less than 3%, the DER for the photoelectric effect from MeV X-rays are higher than that from X-rays in keV range.

Smart grids are characterized by the availability of distributed energy resources (DER), including power switching interfaces (PSI) to connect to the grid. This creates a new scenario for the management of power grids, because DER increase the power capability and flexibility of the network at the expense of a higher complexity of control. If properly driven, however, PSI can improve power quality and distribution efficiency. On the contrary, every control misbehavior can cause voltage instability and/or circulation of useless currents, with the risk to affect network operation. Moreover, especially in case of islanded operation, smart grids can suffer from voltage distortion, asymmetry, and frequency variations, which may affect control accuracy and stability. In such a context, a cooperative control approach of PSI and any other electronic power processors (EPP) acting in the grid is needed, to ensure proper network operation even under severely disturbed conditions. This paper shows that the Conservative Power Theory (CPT) provides a viable background for the development of an optimum control technique of distributed EPP.
