Stereo matching techniques usually match segments or blocks of pixels. This paper proposes to match segments defined as fuzzy sets of pixels. The proposed matching method is applicable to various techniques of stereo matching as well as to different measures of differences between pixels. In the paper, embedment of this approach into the state-of-the-art depth estimation software is described. Obtained experimental results show that the proposed way of stereo matching increases reliability of various depth estimation techniques.

This paper presents a discussion on architecture-oriented assurance technology in Micro grid. We analyzed the characteristic of Micro grid from evolutional view, and proposed the concept of architecture-oriented assurance technology in Micro grid from the technology evolution and policy evolution. Technology evolution contained Function Evolution, Role Changing Autonomy and Role Coordination. Policy evolution included evolution of market rules, price mechanism and management mode. Meanwhile, we proposed two kinds of policy based on role of DER (Distributed Energy Resources). Moreover, we proposed a coordinated control strategy frame based on Role Autonomous Decentralized System (Roads) and its architecture. We defined different roles of Photovoltaic array (PV) DER, constructed the configuration files of PV DER and clarified the driven process. This frame was expected to achieve coordinated control for Microgrid.

In islanded microgrid design, a proper Distributed Energy Resource (DER) selection, sizing and effective coordination between resources are important and challenging optimization tasks. The types and sizes of renewable energy sources such as wind turbines, photovoltaic panels, the capacities of battery bank and the other distributed generators must be optimized in islanded microgrid design. In this paper, the problem is formulated as a nonlinear integer minimization problem which minimizes the sum of the total capital, operational and maintenance cost of DERs, subject to constraints such as energy limits and emission limits of each DER and Loss of Power Supply Probability (LPSP) of the microgrid. This paper proposes an Evolutionary Strategy (ES) for solving this minimization problem. LPSP of each individual of ES's population is calculated by simulation of 8760 hours in a year. The proposed methodology was used to design microgrids for MODERN project. The simulation studies have shown that the proposed methodology provides excellent convergence and feasible optimum solution for sizing of islanded microgrids using evolutionary strategy.

Smart grids offer a new application domain for power electronics. In fact, every Distributed Energy Resource (DER) includes an Electronic Power Processor (EPP) to govern the power exchange with the grid. Such distributed EPPs should perform cooperatively to take full advantage of smart grid potentiality (exploitation of renewable energy sources, power quality and transmission efficiency). In low-voltage residential micro-grids, where number and type of DERs and loads is unpredictable and may vary during daytime, cooperative operation can be achieved by simple cross-communication among neighbor EPPs, without centralized supervisor or additional control units. The paper describes the principles of such cooperative operation together with a communication and control architecture which allows exploitation of micro-grid capabilities without infrastructural investments.

A China MV distribution network benchmark and a common testing basis for the integration of renewable and distributed energy resources (DER) were proposed in this paper. Typical China MV distribution network structure and load information of nodes were also proposed in the benchmark, which can be applied in testing the standardization and integration of renewable and DER. The validity of the benchmark and testing basis was evaluated by a model system integrated with renewable and DER. The results demonstrate the practicability and effectiveness that the benchmark to analyze and verify the integration of renewable and DER.

Electric power systems are entering a new realm of operations. Large amounts of variable generation tax our ability to reliably operate the system. Couple this with a greater reliance on the electricity network to serve consumer demand that is likely to rise significantly even as we drive for greater efficiency. Trade-offs between energy and environmental needs will be constantly negotiated, while a reliable supply of electricity needs even greater assurance in a world where threats of disruption have risen. Smart grid capabilities are being proposed to help address the challenges confronting system operations. This paper reviews the impact of smart grid functionality on transforming power system operations. It explores models for distributed energy resources (DER-generation, storage, and load) that are appearing on the system. It reviews the evolving nature of electricity markets to deal with this complexity and a change of emphasis on signals from these markets to affect power system control. Smart grid capabilities will also impact reliable operations, while cyber security issues must be addressed as a culture change that influences all system design, implementation, and maintenance. Lastly, the paper explores significant questions for further research and the need for a simulation environment that supports such investigation and informs deployments to mitigate operational issues as they arise.

There are two approaches to speaker diarization. They are bottom-up and top-down. Our work on top-down systems show that they can deliver competitive results compared to bottom-up systems and that they are extremely computationally efficient, but also that they are particularly prone to poor model initialisation and cluster impurities. In this paper we present enhancements to our state-of-the-art, top-down approach to speaker diarization that deliver improved stability across three different datasets composed of conference meetings from five standard NIST RT evaluations. We report an improved approach to speaker modelling which, despite having greater chances for cluster impurities, delivers a 35percent relative improvement in DER for the MDM condition. We also describe new work to incorporate cluster purification into a top-down system which delivers relative improvements of 44percent over the baseline system without compromising computational efficiency.

Microgrids can be defined as distribution systems with distributed generation (DG) units, energy storages and controllable loads. Microgrids are expected to form an essential part of future Smart Grids with self-healing feature. Most of the time microgrids will be operated normally parallel with utility grid. In addition to this microgrids have a special self-healing capability, because they can continue operation also in island mode during disturbances, e.g., utility grid outages. One important issue which needs to be solved is the synchronized reconnection of island operated microgrid back to utility grid. In this paper issues related to the re-connection of low voltage (LV) microgrid are studied and different functions to enable synchronized re-connection are presented with various DG unit configurations through simulation studies with PSCAD simulation software.

Power electronics technology is becoming an increasingly important aspect of today's power distribution system. It is the key interface to connect distributed energy resource (DER) to the utility and the local loads. With the increased penetration of power electronics based distributed generation (DG) systems, the power quality requirements are becoming more stringent. On the other hand, if controlled and regulated properly, the DG-grid interfacing converters are able to improve the system efficiency and power quality, in addition to the primary function of real power injection. This paper discusses the opportunities for power quality improvement through the DG-grid interfacing converters. While the harmonic voltage compensation is the focus of this paper, a number of other ancillary functions, such as unbalance voltage compensation, voltage sag mitigation and reactive power compensation, can be realized in a similar manner. Two alternative DG control methods, namely current controlled DG and voltage controlled DG, are considered and the associated power quality compensation strategies are developed. Simulation results and experimental results from a three-phase 5 kVA laboratory DG prototype are provided.
