As renewable energy penetrates the utility market, the electricity industry is undergoing a paradigm shift that will change the industry to generate electricity using distributed generation systems. Consequently, there are new opportunities for enhancing the utility company's power quality and network reliability, as well as increasing their level of automation. This paper surveys the most recent advances in planning, optimization, and automation for distributed generation systems. Our emphasis is on explaining how renewable sources of energy, such as wind power and solar photovoltaic, are integrated into the distributed generation systems. Our review covers both deterministic and probabilistic methods of planning. Automation in power quality monitoring, network control, and fault detection are discussed. There is an increased interest on using smart grids for distributed energy production, distribution, and consumption. Therefore, our paper identifies critical directions for future research in this area.

Most quality models for stereoscopic presentations are dedicated to measuring quality degradation caused by compression artefacts. However, non-compression distortions induced during acquisition and presentation usually have significant influence on 3D viewing experience. In this paper, we propose an objective metric for viewing experience assessment by taking camera baseline and binocular distortion crosstalk into consideration. In particular, the proposed metric is based on our previous work on both subjective evaluation and objective assessment of crosstalk perception. Results on a publicly available stereoscopic quality database demonstrate that the proposed metric can achieve more than 87% correlation with subjective assessment of viewing experience.

This paper describes a test facility designed and operated by MTechnology, Inc. (MTech) for development and testing of grid-connected Distributed Energy Resources (DER). The facility is capable of testing inverters, loads, and related DER connection equipment up to 500 kVA, with an upgrade to 2000 kVA in progress. The facility includes simulation, desktop test equipment, benchtop test fixtures that utilize full-scale hardware operated at reduced voltage and current, synthetic grid testing at full power and under transient and fault conditions, and direct connection to the local utility network. Energy storage is available for the synthetic grid so that fault testing can be conducted without disturbing the local utility network. Data acquisition and data management are particularly important in development testing. The paper concludes with a summary of lessons learned from a variety of development and test efforts.

Electrical Distribution Systems (EDS) are facing ever-increased complexity due, in part, to fast growing consumer demands and the integration of large amounts of distributed energy resources. The conventional operation modes need to be adapted to the significant changes. With advanced Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure and sophisticated new functionalities for energy management, “Smart Grid” is becoming the most forward-looking solution to address these facing challenges. Having initiated a conceptual model, architecture, and implementation plan for the system in previous European research projects (CRISP [1] and MICROGRID [2]). A new integrated platform for ICT based distributed control and local management is currently being designed, with the goal of demonstrating the feasibility of these new concepts. The overarching design of coordination and control between the real automation devices and power system components will be carried out with an analogical micro network (μGrid) including real power operation components such as RTUs. Therefore, some high level functions relied on advanced ICT system such as fault management; voltage control and adaptive reconfiguration are developed and tested for this purpose.

In this paper we propose a new technique for refinement of depth maps. The technique exploits a stereoscopic pair of images and full-pixel precision disparity map in order to produce the output disparity map with sub-pixel precision. The technique employs view synthesis for verification of hypotheses on disparity values, which are formed to iteratively improve the disparity map. Results of experiments, presented for still images and video sequences, show that proposed technique increases quality of depth and has low computational cost. Applications of the proposed technique can be found in future real-time 3D video broadcasting systems which require fast and robust disparity estimation algorithm with high precision.

The integration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) in power systems presents substantial challenges to network planners. Assessing accurately the impact that DER will have is critical, as the specifics of the installed DER may affect: control of the network within limits; quality of supply; losses and financial objectives. The optimal placement and size of DER in a distribution network is desirable when the primary aim of network planning is to keep the system in a secure state; and the secondary aim is to receive the optimum benefits from DER (generation, responsive demand side and stored energy including electric vehicles). Within the Supergen Highly Distributed Power Systems (HDPS) consortium a multiple objective planning framework and tool was developed based on the Strength Pareto Evolutionary algorithm 2 (SPEA2). This tool is able to evaluate the impact of different DER configurations, and to optimise the location, type and operation of DER for an optimal development of the system. The tool includes an outer optimisation, which optimises DER location and type, and an inner optimisation which uses Optimal Power Flow to optimise the operation of DER. This paper describes how this tool can be extended for the planning of networks which have various levels of penetration of DER and to represent the wider set of DER options now emerging such as electric vehicles (EVs) which are the focus of this paper. Different network configurations will be represented within the outer loop investment optimisation problem to allow various network architectures to be selected to complement the decentralised energy resource portfolio.

The ever increasing penetration depth of Distribution Energy Resources (DER) and the development of power electronics devices have a significant impact on the development of DC power transmission and distribution systems. This paper provides an overview of the recent advancement and also envisioned research and development on DC grids, with the objective of identification and discussion of the corresponding issues. Brief descriptions of DC grids at various voltage levels and their benefits are presented and discussed. Different layouts for the DC grids are presented and the associated technical issues are highlighted.

Over the last decade, distributed energy resources (DER) technology has undergone a fast development. Increased penetration of DER units and wide spread use of renewable energy sources challenge the entire architecture of traditional power system. Microgrid, characterizing higher flexibility and reliability, becomes an attractive candidate for the configuration of future electrical power system. This paper gives a brief review of grid interactive ac microgrid configurations. Control methods for power electronics interfaced DER units in grid interactive ac microgrids are discussed. In addition, microgrid controls and power management strategies are presented. Future trends of microgrid are discussed pointing out how this concept can be a key to achieve a more intelligent and flexible AC grid.

Intensive development of electrotechnics in Croatia began in the second half of the 19th century. Just in that time, in a small Croatian town of Križevci, the future “monster of the mind” was born on February 12, 1894. He was the noble Marcel Kiepach of Haselburg, who became known for his patents of the gyro compass, the dynamo for illumination and the electric drives for remote compass indication. His works and inventions belong to the areas of electronics, magnetism, acoustics, transmission of sound signals, and transformers. He died in 1915 as a World War I volunteer at the age of 21.
