This paper deals with depth maps extraction from multi-view video. Contrary to standard stereo matching-based approaches, depth maps are computed here using optical flow estimations between consecutive views. We compare our approach with the one proposed in the Depth estimation Reference Software (DERS) for normalization purposes in the ISO-MPEG 3DV group. Experiments conducted on sequences provided to the normalization community show that the presented method provides high quality depth maps in terms of depth fidelity and virtual views synthesis. Moreover, being implemented on the GPU, it is far faster than the DERS.

A Tutorial on Vectors and Attitude

We examine vectors and attitude in Engineering with greater attention to detail than in earlier works on the subject. This tutorial is an expansion of part of a survey of attitude representations. The most salient characteristic of this work is a greater emphasis on the distinction between physical vectors and their representation as column vectors. The need for such a treatment arises most strongly in attitude estimation, but logically, the need is present also in attitude dynamics and control. Attitude is estimated by comparing two different column-vector representations of the same physical vector. Thus, from the beginning, the distinction between physical vectors and column vectors requires explicit treatment in attitude estimation. In works on attitude dynamics and control, however, this distinction is often overlooked or presented only in attitude statics, with the transition to attitude dynamics being made as much through verbal arguments as by mathematical development.

The problem of probability density estimation can be used in many areas in signal processing, such as regression and classification. In this paper, a density estimation approach based on Support Vector Machine (SVM) was developed. Our algorithm has robust results and sparse solutions compared with Parzen's method. Besides, we used fundamental splines instead of Gaussian kernels in order to further reduce the computation. The simulations show that SVM method for density estimation has a moderately good performance and high convergence speed. Further more, a Bayesian classifier is constructed using the density estimation algorithm.

Electrical distribution systems (EDS) are undergoing some significant changes at various scales and levels. These changes are triggered by several factors such as the event of distributed energy resources (DER) and the need to improve the quality of supply while achieving economical optima. Hence, several research initiatives, technological development and experiments have been launched worldwide to tackle this situation such as ldquoSmartGridsrdquo. This panel deals with some new decentralized operating modes for EDS management with high penetration of DER. These decentralized modes are based on distributing the management system locally and intelligently using advanced Information and Communication Technology (ICT). These concepts are being demonstrated through an experimental platform: an analogical micronetwork (muGrid). Functions such as fault management and high level of self adaptive architectures are developed for these new modes.

Climate change concerns, mandatory requirements for the renewable portfolio standards, incentives offered by the Government, and cost reduction in renewables and distributed energy sources (DER) are some of the driving forces for the steep growth in DER installations. DERs are commonly connected near the load in the electric power distribution system. DER includes renewable energy such as wind and solar, fossil-fuel based generation-microturbines, and other distributed energy storage elements. In this research, a novel methodology is developed that optimizes the sizing and placement of DER on electrical distribution feeders based on technical and economic considerations. The paper also evaluates the methodology on the IEEE 34-bus system.

The potential to improve distribution system reliability is a primary motivation behind the development and deployment of microgrids. Previous studies have illustrated substantial reliability benefits of dispatchable distributed energy resources (DER). However, more analysis and new evaluation methodologies are needed for microgrids dominated by limited and stochastic distributed generation (SDG). The present paper introduces an evaluation methodology for islanded microgrids that realistically represents stochastic resources and explicitly examines the influence of supply-to-load correlation on reliability. Monte-Carlo simulation is used to model component failure and repair, while historical data is used for the stochastic resource. SDG output is allocated to loads based on a prioritized order that accounts for the dynamic reconfiguration of the microgrid in the case of a local fault. Voluntary load curtailment and its impact on reliability are also examined. Simulation results reveal that the priority order of a given load section on an islanded microgrid with limited SDG determines its dominant cause of interruption and has a major influence on reliability.

Summary form only given: This paper will present potential future scenarios for a distribution grid with high penetration of distributed energy resources (DER) and demand response (DR), while discussing potential technical and operational challenges, and possible solutions. It will then provide a comprehensive technology blueprint for a large scale implementation of DR spanning from ISO markets to home are networks (HAN) while covering all impacted utility information systems and business functions. Interfaces and impacts on the existing systems will be highlighted while presenting a straw-man architecture for the end-to-end solution. The DR capabilities of post-AMI and smart grid will be contrasted against the traditional load management functions while identifying enhanced capabilities and improved business practices. A roadmap for implementation of broad-base DR/DER capabilities will be presented.

Power systems worldwide have gone through a transition from vertically integrated into liberalized energy markets. At the same time, increased environmental concerns are promoting the use of renewable and efficient generation technologies. Consequently, a growing number of small-scale distributed energy resources (DER) are being installed in distribution systems. Passive operation of DER can result in severe grid operation problems. In contrast, active DER management can bring mutual benefits for the DER owner as well as distribution system operators (DSO). In this article a flexible multi-objective optimization scheme is presented in which DER placement and optimal ancillary services are evaluated and compared with conventional grid reinforcements. This allows assessing the potential of optimal active DER management and evaluating different tariff schemes for DER connection at different levels of DER in the grid. The proposed method uses a hybrid strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm (SPEA2) with a distribution optimal power flow (OPF). Results are analyzed using the UKGDS 355-bus system.

In this paper, we propose two cluster criterion functions which aim to maximize the separation between intra-cluster distances and inter-cluster distances. These criteria can automatically deduce the desired number of clusters based on their extremized values. We then propose an algorithm to apply our criterion functions in conjunction with spectral clustering. By exploiting the characteristic of spectral subspace, we show that the speakers are more separable in this subspace which will further enhance the effectiveness of our proposed criteria. The algorithm is used in our agglomerative hierarchical speaker diarization system to test on Rich Transcription 2007 conference data set and obtains very good results.
