Distributed energy resources (DE) with power electronics (PE) interfaces with the right control are capable of providing reactive power related ancillary services; voltage regulation in particular has drawn much attention. In this paper the problem of how to coordinate control multiple DEs to regulate the local voltage in the distribution system is addressed. A control method for voltage regulation using the DE PE controller is presented and based on the proposed control scheme; the voltage regulation of a distribution system with one DE and two DEs are tested, respectively. The factors affecting the gain parameters of the PE controller are investigated. The simulation results show that the parameters of the controller determine its dynamic response for voltage regulation and the factors associated with the network characteristics, such as locations of DEs and the amount of load, affect the impact range of the controller. The research work presented in this paper can be potentially used for the control system design of Smart Grid or Utility of the Future.

This paper show that it is possible to control a distributed generator coupled with storage to maintain grid flow constant at all times. Furthermore, it is possible to achieve a steady state operation with a periodic loading profile while enforcing active power limits and energy storage limits. An energy reserve for the storage is necessary to guarantee power to the loads during an islanding event. The control of the clustered pair, generator plus storage, is identical to microgrid source control, with some added constraints on the active powers. These constraints depend on the configuration that one chooses to adopt, either generator or storage performing the base loading function while the other performs the peak shaving function.

This paper proposes a new design guideline for reliability improvement of distribution networks using distributed energy resource (DER). The proposed guideline is advised to maintain CDI values of all customers under a certain pre-defined threshold value. The impact of the switching devices failure on the reliability is also considered and proper corrections are made on various threshold values within the guideline, therefore the obtained results will also be valid when considering non-ideal switching devices. The simulation results show that the guideline produces reasonably good results. Furthermore the proposed correction method for the calculation of non-ideal switching devices is validated.

State-of-the-art speaker diarization systems for meetings are now at a point where overlapped speech contributes significantly to the errors made by the system. However, little if no work has yet been done on detecting overlapped speech. We present our initial work toward developing an overlap detection system for improved meeting diarization. We investigate various features, with a focus on high-precision performance for use in the detector, and examine performance results on a subset of the AMI Meeting Corpus. For the high-quality signal case of a single mixed-headset channel signal, we demonstrate a relative improvement of about 7.4% DER over the baseline diarization system, while for the more challenging case of the single far-field channel signal relative improvement is 3.6%. We also outline steps towards improvement and moving beyond this initial phase.

In electricity grids the frequency of the voltage is stabilized by a combination of the rotational inertia (rotating mass) of synchronous power generators in the grid and a control algorithm acting on the rotational speed of a number of major synchronous power generators. When in future small non-synchronous generation units replace a significant part of the synchronous power generation capacity, the total rotational inertia of the synchronous generators is decreased significantly. This causes large frequency variations that can end up in an unstable grid. A way to stabilize the grid frequency is to add virtual rotational inertia to the distributed generators. A virtual inertia can be attained for any generator by adding a short-term energy storage to it, combined with a suitable control mechanism for its power electronics converter. In this way a generator can behave like a ldquoVirtual Synchronous Generatorrdquo (VSG) during short time intervals, and contribute to stabilization of the grid frequency.

The increasing integration of controllable energy resources into distribution networks introduces novel challenges and opportunities in terms of distributed voltage control. As these devices are mainly controlling their active power injection, and do not provide voltage control capabilities, a regional coordinator has to determine favorable combinations of power injections and consumption with respect to the voltage profile of the particular network segment. The main challenge is to approximate voltage profiles from the complex nodal power balance of all nodes in a particular network. Standard algorithms calculate exact voltage profiles from combinations of complex nodal net power, but fail to provide information about the network conditions in the surrounding of this particular point of operation. In this paper we present a novel approach basing on the geometrical interpretation of a modified nodal admittance matrix. It allows for the determination of combinations of power injections in the surrounding of a point of operation that have a similar corresponding voltage profiles. Our approach takes into account reactive as well as active power injections.

As the penetration of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) in existing conventional grid increases leading to the distributed generation (DG) concept. The use of full scale dynamic simulation to analyze load variation, the frequency and voltage of the power system in DG provides complex tasks to researchers and planners such as huge computational time. This paper introduces modeling approach for power distribution systems using dynamic-RMS method for the electrical part in combination with differential equations to describe the behavior of the mechanical part of the power system. This innovative approach allows the simulation of DG running with a complex load flow including network transmission lines, transformers and losses. The simulation results illustrate this approach has superior advantages in comparison with normal full scale dynamic model since it is faster and needs less computational resources.

Distributed generation (DG) of electricity is providing an increasing part of the worldwide electricity supply. At the same time, there is a big potential of demand response resources. When - in a geographical area or in the contract portfolio of an energy trader - the number of these distributed energy resources (DER) increases, clustered control of DER by common ICT (information and communication technology) systems can add value. Due to the fine-grained and distributed nature of DER, the design of such a system needs to meet heavy requirements, e.g. regarding scalability and openness. Further, these systems need to balance multiple stakes in a multi-actor environment. Multiagent systems, especially those based on electronic markets have been identified as key technologies in this respect. This paper presents a multiperspective case study of the design, implementation and performance of such a system for the business case of imbalance reduction in commercial clusters of DER. The benefits of this approach are shown by field experimental results of a real-life DER cluster with an imbalance characteristic dominated by wind electricity production. The approach resulted in substantial imbalance reductions. Further, a thorough analysis of the networked business constellation is given, together with an indication how business modelling techniques can be used to assess the financial feasibility of the business idea.

This presentation deals with a new paradigm where a mix of central station generation, distributed generation and energy efficiency/demand side management practices will provide an alternative and sustainable way to meet the growing needs for electricity. The proposed concept takes into account the availability of cleaner, more efficient and cost-effective small-scale generation sources, as well as advanced IP-based communication technologies in building a resilient electric power system with demand-side participation. The Intelligent Distributed Autonomous Power System (IDAPS) micro grid conceptual framework can contribute to building a resilient and environment-friendly customer-based microgrid, which can exploit energy efficiency opportunities. While the current focus of microgrid R&D is on utility-owned Distributed Energy Resource (DER) units - which are designed to work in a collaborative fashion - the IDAPS concept captures and coordinates customer-owned DER devices. In addition, this framework takes advantage of demand side management in ensuring that critical loads are served during emergency conditions. Building blocks of an IDAPS microgrid comprise physical and cyber layers. The physical layer includes DERs, power electronic devices, distribution circuits and loads. The cyber layer includes an addressable control architecture that represents the decision support system for the IDAPS microgrid.

Audio diarization is the process of assigning audio channel temporal segments to the appropriate generating source according to specific acoustic properties. Sources can be speech, music, background noise etc. Speaker diarization systems confronts the problem of segmentation and labeling of a conversation while no prior knowledge on the speakers is available. As human expert segmentation is time and money consuming; it is worthwhile to develop an automatic diarization system as a replacement to human expert segmentation for speaker recognition applications. However, diarization systems has more false detected segments than can be allowed for speaker model training. This work focuses on the reduction of the false detected segments and in the selection of "pure" segments which contains only the required speaker data. For this purpose a measure of "purity" and the methodology for the extraction of the "pure" segments are required. In this paper a pure segments selection algorithm employing an expert system decision is presented. The proposed system is based on majority vote and normalized maximum likelihood of the segments. The pure segments selection algorithm relies on the accuracy of the diarization system which is based on Self Organizing Maps (SOM) as speaker models. One hundred and eight conversations from LDC America Call Home database are used for evaluation. The proposed approach shows a DER improvement of 29% relative to the DER achieved by the original diarization system.
