The electric power industry is in the midst of a critical period in its evolution. The re-regulation of the industry has resulted in the creation of self-locating merchant generation and wholesale electric power markets that are using the transmission system in ways for which it was not designed. This had resulted in a system operation closer to its edge. The retail customers have increasingly sophisticated energy service requirements that require much higher power quality than in the past. On way to approach these issues is to focus on robustness at the networked transmission and generation system while providing reliability locally. The distribution system should focus on providing the customer with the required level of power quality. Distributed energy resource (DER) is a way to enhance the distribution system's level of power quality.

The paper presents capabilities of DSTATCOM systems used to improve power quality (PQ) in low voltage (LV) grids with distributed energy resources (DERs). For the case study a typical rural network has been selected in which, on one hand DER installing is the most probable and on the other hand, integration process may cause the biggest problems. Selected single-phase DERs of varying power are connected into the network which introduce PQ disturbances such as voltage variations, harmonics and asymmetry. To mitigate deviations in power quality DSTATCOM compensator operating in current control mode has been applied. Models of the network together with the selected DERs and compensator system have been developed in the PSCAD/EMTDC environment. Simulation has been performed for the analysis of the network performance and the assessment of compensation effectiveness. The possibility of using the DSTATCOM operating in voltage control mode for reducing voltage dips coming from the supplying network has also been studied. Control circuits have been designed for these two modes of operation. Description of the study network, their element models and some selected results of simulation are presented in the paper.

In this paper, we describe a new method for speaker segmentation and clustering of an audio document. For the segmentation phase, we combine the generalized likelihood ratio (GLR) and the Bayesian information criterion (BIC) in a way that avoids most of the parameters tuning. For the clustering phase, we use an existing approach that utilizes the eigen vector space model (EVSM) with a bottom-up hierarchical grouping but we make some improvements by introducing prosodic information. Evaluation is done on the audio database of the ESTER evaluation campaign for the rich transcription of French Broadcast news. Results show that our method which operates without any a priori knowledge about speakers is suitable for speaker diarization as it outperforms the traditional ones with an overall diarization error rate (DER) of 16.72%.

During the past few years, speaker diarization has achieved satisfying accuracy in terms of speaker Diarization Error Rate (DER). The most successful approaches, based on agglomerative clustering, however, exhibit an inherent computational complexity which makes real-time processing, especially in combination with further processing steps, almost impossible. In this article we present a framework to speed up agglomerative clustering speaker diarization. The basic idea is to adopt a computationally cheap method to reduce the hypothesis space of the more expensive and accurate model selection via Bayesian Information Criterion (BIC). Two strategies based on the pitch-correlogram and the unscented-trans-form based approximation of KL-divergence are used independently as a fast-match approach to select the most likely clusters to merge. We performed the experiments using the existing ICSI speaker diarization system. The new system using KL-divergence fast-match strategy only performs 14% of total BIC comparisons needed in the baseline system, speeds up the system by 41% without affecting the speaker Diarization Error Rate (DER). The result is a robust and faster than real-time speaker diarization system.

This paper presents a case study based on a real distribution network with a high share of distributed generation. We built the simulation on the present network topology and generated a scenario for the expected future with a high penetration of DER (distributed energy resources) and an increase of the consumption. Even with a load growth exceeding the substations capacity the simulated network can be operated with a high security of supply. This degree of power quality is guaranteed by controllable DER units which are capable of operating in an islanded mode and of providing voltage control and congestion management as ancillary services. Simplified models of common DER units are described. They allow a simulation a thousand-node network.

This paper extends the continuation power flow method to negative load power injections, so as to compute load- ability limits for systems with dispersed generation. An illustrative case study to investigate the properties of extended PV curves and loadability surfaces is included. It is seen that resistive networks can accommodate larger generation power than lossless ones. Multiple branches of low-voltage solutions are identified.

The paper presents a two-stage scheduler for the optimal scheduling of distributed energy resources (DER) connected to a distribution network. The proposed approach integrates a centralized day-ahead scheduler with an intra-day one. On the one hand, the day-ahead scheduler calculates the active power set points during the following day taking into account both technical and economic objectives and constraints. On the other hand, the intra-day scheduler takes into account the results of the day-ahead one and updates every 15 minutes the DERs set points for the optimization of the network voltage profiles. The paper describes the implementation of the proposed two-stage scheduler algorithm into a computer code based on a JavaScript link between Matlab and EMTP-RV simulation environments and presents the results obtained for the case of a network configuration adapted from the IEEE 34-node test distribution feeder.
