Junction charge-coupled devices (JCCDs) offer advantages over conventional charge-coupled devices in the area of logic applications. These advantages are based on the fact that charge can be injected and detected through the steering gates of the JCCD, thus offering the possibility of three-dimensional charge transport. These unique charge injection and detection structures have been used to design basic logic functions, such as AND, OR, INVERT, and REGENERATE. A very simple bipolar process, using only five masking steps and 7.5-/spl mu/m layout rules has been used to show the feasibility of the logic elements. These JCCL devices, intended only for demonstration of the principles, have been operated at clock frequencies up to 5 MHz. Other properties of JCCL devices, such as silicon area used and possibility of applications in multivalued logic circuits make them look very promising. Calculations and experiments have shown that scaling down of the devices will allow clock frequencies of up to 50 MHz.

THE TAPERED HYBRID UNDULATOR (THUNDER) OF THE VISIBLE FREE-ELECTRON LASER-OSCILLATOR EXPERIMENT

A 5 m tapered hybrid undulator (THUNDER) has been designed and built as part of the Boeing Aerospace Company and Spectra Technology, Inc. visible free-electron laser (FEL) oscillator experiment. The performance goals required of an undulator for a visible oscillator with large extraction are ambitious. They require the establishment of stringent magnetic field quality tolerances which impact design and fabrication techniques. The performance goals of THUNDER are presented. The tolerances resulting from the FEL interaction are contrasted and compared to those of a synchrotron radiation source. The design, fabrication, and field measurements are discussed. The performance of THUNDER serves as a benchmark for future wiggler/undulator designs for advanced FEL's and synchrotron radiation sources.

A new transformation in alternating-current theory with an application to the theory of audition

A mathematical transformation of the elements of an impedance, called a j-transformation is considered whereby the complex impedance of each of the constituents is multiplied by j, j 2 and j 3 and thereupon the physical meaning of such a transformed system is investigated. Thus new circuits can be derived from known circuits and special properties of the former are transformed into new special properties of the latter. Further negative capacities and negative inductances are considered which are independent of frequency. Next several a-c circuits are described having the property that the modulus of their impedances is independent of frequency. Hence a complicated "wave" form, such as speech, retains in such a circuit all its higher harmonics with their former amplitudes, though the phases of these harmonics are shifted. Oscillograms of vowels thus obviously show a very marked distortion, though the ear is unable to detect this phase distortion. The experiments confirm the well-known acoustical law of Ohm stating that within limits the ear is not able to detect phase shifts of the components of a complicated sound.

A NOISE-INSENSITIVE COMPROMISE GRADIENT-METHOD FOR THE ADJUSTMENT OF ADAPTIVE ECHO CANCELLERS

The time-optimum gradient method for the coefficient adjustment of adaptive echo cancellers allows a fast adjustment and a high echo return loss enhancement (ERLE) in the noise-free case. If noise occurs on the echo path, a compromise is necessary between the relatively large step size needed for rapid convergence and the relatively small step size needed for noise insensitivity. In this paper a noise-insensitive compromise method is proposed, which guarantees an acceptable ERLE in the noise-free case, as well as under line noise conditions. The method has, furthermore, the advantage of being easily instrumented. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is determined by computer simulations under realistic conditions with two algorithms frequently used in previous publications: with the time-optimum gradient method and with a method with constant step-size factor. The simulations were carried out with floating-point arithmetic and with fixed-point arithmetic with 16 and 12 bit resolution to determine the maximum performance and necessary implementation expense of the different adjustment methods.

Determination of elements by nuclear analytical methods

The working principle of nuclear analytical methods (NAMs) is not influenced by the chemical bond. Consequently, they are independent counterparts to the well-known chemical procedures. NAMs obey fundamental laws or can be described and understood thoroughly. This qualifies them as candidates for reference methods. Although following similar nuclear reaction schemes, they comprise bulk analyzing capability (neutron and photon activation analysis) as well as detection power in surface near regions of solids lion beam techniques). Prominent features of NAMs are sensitivity, selectivity, multielement determination and linearity of the calibration function covering a concentration range of several orders of magnitude. Moreover, ion beam techniques allow depth profiling with nm-resolution in several cases while the ion microprobe additionally offers a lateral resolution in the mum-scale. As NAMs require expensive apparatus (nuclear reactor, accelerator in radioactive control areas) their availability is restricted to a small number of suitably equipped institutes. However, they are able to solve complex analytical tasks, take part in key comparisons and play an essential role in the certification of reference materials.

ArnHF (n=1-4) van der Waals clusters: A quantum Monte Carlo study of ground state energies, structures and HF vibrational frequency shifts

Rigid-body diffusion quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) calculations of the intermolecular vibrational ground states of ArnHF clusters with n = 1-4, for HF v = 0 and v = 1, are reported. The intermolecular degrees of freedom of the clusters are treated in full dimensionality, and the best available pairwise additive potential surfaces are used. The calculations yield intermolecular ground state energies, probability distributions of intermolecular coordinates and HF vibrational red-shifts. The vibrationally averaged cluster structures are consistent with experimental geometries. Small but systematic differences between the painwise additive DQMC red-shifts and experimental values for the n = 2-4 clusters are indicative of the need for the inclusion of nonadditive interactions.

A DROSOPHILA SHC GENE-PRODUCT IS IMPLICATED IN SIGNALING BY THE DER RECEPTOR TYROSINE KINASE

Antibodies to the human Shc adaptor protein were used to isolate a cDNA encoding a Drosophila Shc protein (dShc) by screening an expression library. The dshc gene, which maps to position 67B-C on the third chromosome, encodes a 45-kDa protein that is widely expressed throughout the Drosophila life cycle. In flies, the dShc protein physically associates with the activated Drosophila epidermal growth factor receptor homolog (DER) and is inducibly phosphorylated on tyrosine by DER. The 45-kDa dShc protein is closely related both in overall organization and in amino acid sequence (46% identity) to the 52-kDa mammalian Shc isoform. In addition to a C-terminal Src homology 2 (SH2) domain, dShc contains an N-terminal phosphotyrosine binding (PTB) domain, which associates in vitro with the autophosphorylated DER receptor tyrosine kinase and with phosphopeptides containing an Asn-Pro-X-pTyr motif, where pTyr stands for phosphotyrosine. A potential binding site for the dShc PTB domain is located at Tyr-1228 of DER. These results indicate that the shc gene has been conserved in evolution, as have the binding properties of the Shc PTB and SH2 domains. Despite the close relationship between the Drosophila and mammalian Shc proteins, dShc lacks the high-affinity Grb2-binding site found in mammalian Shc, suggesting that Shc proteins may have functions in addition to regulation of the Ras pathway.
