Distributed energy resources have been receiving increasing attention over the past decade as alternatives to centralized generation. In the next few decades, the penetration of microgrids is expected to grow dramatically. The bulk of DERs will be integrated into existing distribution systems. To maximize the economic and reliability benefits of these installations, distributed systems will evolve into networked 'microgrids'. This paper describes a rational method of developing micro-grid architectures in a manner that maximizes the economic benefits of deploying the resources. The method consists of a particle swarm optimization (PSO) formulation that seeks to make the most economical connections that will satisfy the stipulated reliability criteria. This paper describes the method and its implementation, and illustrates it by means of examples. The validation of the method using a rigorous dynamic programming approach, is also outlined

The anticipated growing penetration of inverter-interfaced DER affects several aspects of power system analysis ranging from the impact on the system behavior to the modeling and simulation needs of the new technologies. The adequate representation and assessment of the role of the self-commutated converters is addressed through a number of challenges illustrated by a set of examples dealing with system integration of DER, islanded operation of self-commutated converters and modeling and simulation requirements. A generic model of self-commutated converter is proposed allowing their representation in phasor-type simulation programs

Researchers in the speaker diarization community have observed that some audio files show unusually high diarization error rates (DER) (hard to crack "nuts"), and some exhibit hyper-sensitivity to tuning parameters ("flakes"). The goal of this study is to systematically study the features that correlate with such behavior. We calculated over forty features for each of 24 shows from the broadcast news corpus along the dimensions of speaker count, conversation turn, and speaker and show duration. We observed that number of speakers, number of turns, and do-nothing DER (a measure related to the percentage of time the dominant speaker spoke) correlated best with "nuttiness". The do-nothing DER and number of speakers were also the best correlates of "flakiness"

This paper presents a Monte Carlo simulation based approach to estimate the interruption duration distributions at the load buses in a micro grid for the determination of need based storage assessment. Energy limited nature of storage devices is considered for the reliability evaluation. Time variable load and generation profiles have also been incorporated in the method to obtain more practical distributions of interruption durations. The method is demonstrated on a ten bus test system and the results are explained.

This paper presents experimental results from the hardware implementation of a power conversion system (PCS), and its islanding control and detection algorithms, for a distributed generation (DG) unit's interface to the utility grid. The control and detection schemes implemented are shown in simulations to be stable and effective. The algorithms allow for not only transient control between modes of operation (grid-connected to stand-alone, islanding, modes) but for the elimination of nondetection zones (NDZ) and the autonomous operation of the PCS from the grid. The simulations show that the concepts of the algorithms are feasible, while the hardware implementation, via power electronics building blocks (PEBBs), shows the results that validate them.

Interconnection equipment between distributed energy resources (DER) and the grid is typically custom designed by the distributed generation (DG) equipment manufacturer or integrated by engineering firms using subcomponents such as relays, sensors and switchgear. The DER Switch described in the paper has integrated all of the required equipment for the DER interconnection into a single package that is designed to be compliant with IEEE 1547 and UL 1741 standards. A 480 V, 200 A, circuit breaker based DER Switch prototype with a digital signal processing (DSP) board was designed, built and tested. The objective was to create a standard, flexible universal interface switch for distributed energy resources so that single or multiple DER systems like wind turbines or solar arrays can be connected to a utility. The resulting interconnection switch design is DER technology neutral and can be used for inverter and machine DG applications.

The framework programmes (FP) for research is the main EU funding mechanism for research, technological development and demonstration. With a budget of almost one billion Euros, projects in the area of energy from the previous FP5 (1998-2002) are well advanced, with many entering the critical phase of exploiting and disseminating their results. The total expenditure on European RTD projects for the large-scale integration of renewable energy sources (RES) and distributed generation (DG), i.e. distributed energy resources (DER) and key enabling technologies, within FP5 is of the order of euro130 million, with an EC contribution of about euro67 million. The main objective of FP6, which runs from 2002 to 2006, is to contribute to the creation of a true European research area (ERA). ERA is a vision for the future of research in Europe, an internal market for science and technology. It fosters scientific excellence, competitiveness and innovation through the promotion of better co-operation and coordination between relevant actors at all levels. FP6 is structured into `thematic priorities'. RTD, including largescale integration of DER into electricity networks, is being implemented within thematic priority 6.1. `sustainable energy systems' which has a total budget of around euro890 million. Currently, about euro91 million, matched by public and private investments, with a EU funding of about euro50 million, has been awarded to RTD projects for the large-scale integration of DER in FP6
