DERs in general have completely different dynamics than the traditional rotating machinery (generators and motors) based power system. Present DER technology uses converters for interfacing DERs to the power grid. These interfaces are inertialess and limit the electric current during faults and transients. At the same time, the converters have sophisticated feedback control loops that may interact with the transient of the electric power system with the end effect of generating unintended modes of oscillations. These characteristics of DERs impact the dynamics of the integrated power system with DERs. Present day models are inadequate to realistically simulate the new paradigm of the integrated model. We present a new modeling methodology for the integrated system based on quadratization of the model equations and quadratic integration of the resulting dynamical equations. The new approach captures the salient features of the integrated system. The paper presents the utilization of this model for transient simulation of the integrated system as well as for analyzing the modes of oscillations of the system using small signal analysis. The methodologies are illustrated with case studies. The case studies illustrate the unique dynamic behavior of the integrated system as the penetration level of DERs increases as well as the dynamic interactions between the system and the converter controls of the DERs which generate additional unexpected modes of oscillation

This paper describes a method for siting of distributed energy resources (DER) within the framework of an optimal microgrid architecture. An optimal microgrid architecture is characterized by minimum cost interconnection, sizing, and siting of DER subject to stipulated global and local reliability criteria. This paper addresses the siting aspect of optimal microgrid architecture. The siting problem considers factors like deployment costs and savings gained by the use of combined heat and power (CHP). The problem is formulated as one of nonlinear programming and simulated annealing optimization is applied. This paper presents the development and implementation of the method, and demonstrates it using a six bus test system

The widespread use of distributed energy resources (DER) relies on methods and techniques aimed at facilitating the network integration of DER. In this context a methodology for the evaluation of the quality and relative merits of these methods and techniques is missing. CIGRE Task Force C6.04.02, which is affiliated with CIGRE Study Committee C6, has addressed this problem. A set of resource and network benchmarks is proposed in order to model a wide spectrum of real-world DER integration problems and to create and evaluate solutions to these problems. In the present paper, the development of these benchmarks is introduced

This report documents the results of an R&D project, titled "distributed energy resource (DER) demonstration", and covers the development, installation, operation and performance of DER equipment on the AEP distribution system. The intent of this R&D project is to demonstrate the concept of: 1) utilizing commercially available generation equipment as a means to reduce electrical peak load on thermally-loaded distribution station facilities; 2) deferring a major capital investment and allowing sufficient time to implement a plan to upgrade the 23 kV sub-transmission and station facilities to 69 kV; and 3) verifying the integrity of data security and use of wireless/digital cellular communication equipment at remote locations on the distribution system

Small, distributed resources provide benefits to both utilities and end users, and installation of these resources continues to grow in number. Small generators located at or near the loads they serve have the technical and economic advantage over large remote plants when siting, construction time, reliability, and operational flexibility are considered. Among these advantages include avoidance of significant grid construction and maintenance costs and improvements to utility grid performance. This presentation starts with a historical look at the evolution of steam turbine power stations from local, neighborhood-scale generators into huge, remote power plants in the 1960s. It also discusses the technical and economic impacts of DER on the existing grid infrastructure

The share of the dispersed energy production is supposed to increase in the next years in many countries up to 30%. Wind, PV, CHP, microturbines, fuel cells and also different kinds of energy storages are expected to be the future decentralised generation units. These units supply electrical energy at the low and medium voltage level which changes its functionality. A big amount of the locally generated energy is also consumed locally so the distribution network gets a local network character. There is not a lot of experience in the planning and operation of such local distribution systems. Some pilot projects in Europe like EDISon, or DisPower give the first practical information about the problems connected with the planning and operation of the electric networks with dispersed energy resources (DER). Also the CIGRE is working on these problems in the scope of the Scientific Committee SC6. In this paper a benchmark network proposal based on a European Project and the discussion in the scope of the CIGRE SC6 group is presented. The topology of the local distribution network and its parameters are presented. A methodology for the use of the proposed parameters and for the sensitivity analysis is given. Additionally some simulation examples for different local energy generation scenarios are presented. The paper shows that it is not trivial to create a universal benchmark for distribution systems with DER

The design of routing protocols is crucial for mobile ad-hoc networks due to their fast-changing characteristics. Most of the ad-hoc routing algorithms are designed based on extensive flooding of control packets, which result in excessive overheads within the networks. The greedy routing algorithms employ localized information from the mobile nodes (e.g. relative distance or direction), which induce comparably less control packets in the networks. However, several problems (e.g voids, loops, or dead-ends) are encountered in most of the greedy algorithms due to the localized characteristics. In this paper, a largest forwarding region (LFR) routing protocol is developed. The mobile node with the largest extended forwarding region (EFR) is selected as the next hopping node for packet forwarding. The associated backward constraint (BC) and dead-end recovery (DER) mechanisms further alleviate the problems resulting from voids in the networks. The performance comparison between the proposed LFR algorithm and other existing greedy routing schemes is conducted via simulations. It is observed that the LFR scheme effectively increases the packet arrival rate without creating excessive control overheads.

Studies suggest that obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is causally related to abnormal cardiovascular autonomic control in adults, but this has not been established in pediatric OSAS. The goal of this study was to quantify autonomic system dysfunction, as manifested by cardiovascular response abnormalities, in children with OSAS. During wakefulness, we continuously measured the ECG, arterial blood pressure and airflow in each subject. These measurements were made during the following conditions: spontaneous breathing in the supine posture (baseline), spontaneous breathing in the standing posture (orthostatic stress); tracking of the subject's own prior spontaneous breathing pattern while supine (mental stress), and during a cold face challenge. Using spectral analysis and modeling techniques, we sought to computationally delineate the physiological mechanisms that mediate these abnormalities. Our preliminary results suggest that the autonomic effects of pediatric OSAS differ from those in adult in that parasympathetic activity remains relatively normal despite the elevated peripheral sympathetic drive
