This paper presents an implementation of an electronic-learning system in the area of water power plants within the framework of teaching renewable energy resources. Based on written scenarios the teaching modules in this area of science are realized. The control of the studying and testing modules is accomplished with the help of a Petri network, and the structure of the teaching modules is presented in a few examples. This part of the project, which is the subject of a university study program, is implemented in a special multimedia laboratory as an additional part of the conventional lecture and exercises in the subject of renewable energy resources. Student comments on this new way of teaching are also presented.

A group of eight European energy utilities in partnership with manufacturers, research organizations, professionals, national agencies and a bank, are implementing the EU-DEEP integrated project. It aims at providing methodologies to speed up the large-scale implementation of DER in Europe. This development requires a set of iterative R&D tasks to qualify the prospects of the newly defined market segments. This work will be completed by five one-year experimental measurements campaigns. In order to validate the new approach, a minimum of five market segments must be studied in the three market sectors (industrial, commercial and residential) for one or two types of DER demands "incremental-DER" and "DER-breakthrough". Manufacturers should then be in a position to launch industrialization tasks of the most promising DER solutions. In addition, regulatory bodies will be able to release some of the barriers which still prevent more DER solutions from reaching market applications.

Contemporary state of renewable electricity in Poland depends on the following facts: (1) installed capacity in existing power plants exceeds the electrical energy consumption, necessity in pollution limitation according to EU regulations needs exchange old power plants with new electrical energy sources, (2) according to J. Biedrzycki et al. (2003) installed capacity per capita in 2001 equal to 0.9 kW in Poland is lower than average in EU (1.5 kW). The above mentioned circumstances expand area for introducing renewable electricity sources (RES) in Poland.

Protection technique is one of the fundamental disciplines of power system engineering. The Otto-von-Guericke-University Magdeburg offers one lecture with an additional weekly laboratory session in this discipline for the masters program as well as one for undergraduate students. In addition to the lecture a new way of teaching in a specially designed multimedia laboratory at the university has been offered to the students since the fall of 2004. In this paper the realization of an E-Learning project for the discipline "digital protection" is presented. In the course a special chapter presenting protection concepts in distribution systems with dispersed energy resources is included. The concept of implementing the learning material on the basis of written scenarios is shown. Simulations in MATLAB for illustrating the teaching material during the virtual teaching are also given. A multiple choice quiz at the end of each chapter is included to test the knowledge gained by the students. This new method of teaching has been well accepted by the students

Self-absorption or photon recycling (PR) has been observed experimentally as a reduction in the ideality n=1 reverse saturation current of SB-QWSCs. We believe this is the first example of PR effects on solar cell dark-currents. PR is observed at high bias when the primary recombination mechanism in SB-QWSCs is radiative recombination in the quantum wells corresponding to ideality n=1 dark-currents. Results are presented here on the effect of PR on the dark-current and electroluminescence (EL) spectrum; PR has resulted in DBR SB-QWSC dark-current and EL suppression of up to 35% both experimentally and theoretically. Comparison is made to control cells without a DBR. Modelling results will allow us to make predictions for expected efficiency enhancement in optimised SB-QWSC devices at high concentration levels. These results convincingly reveal how PR can increase the efficiency of SB-QWSCs.

We are developing agents for the control of distributed energy resources (DERS) in the electricity network. These resources consist of both generators and loads, physically located close to load centres. Although traditionally DERs have operated independently, we have been able to demonstrate an architecture whereby DERs collaborate to present an aggregated response. This aggregated response can be used to support the network at times of peak demand, increasing efficiency and robustness. In this paper, we focus on one such DER agent, which provides control of a commercial cool room. This agent utilizes a wireless sensor network to collect information on various products in the cool room, allowing the control system to respond based on aggregated conditions across the sensor network. Through development of new software and protocols, the sensor network is able to exist on the same control channel as traditional control hardware and provide extra reliability and fault tolerance.

Remote electrification with island supply systems, the increasing acceptance of the microgrids concept and the penetration of the interconnected grid with DER and RES require the application of inverters and the development of new control algorithms.
