Today's power delivery infrastructure is operating under extreme stress. The last few decades have seen minimal investment in infrastructure, and little has been done to prepare the ageing equipment for increasing load growths and the demands of open access. Consequently, the deployment of distributed energy resources (DER) is becoming an increasingly attractive alternative to the expensive and time consuming processes of upgrading and augmenting the transmission and distribution systems. DERs are small, modular sources (generation or storage) of energy which are often more efficient and controllable than traditional power plants. These devices are installed at or near centers of utilization. Eventually, as their penetration increases considerably, they are interconnected in a grid-like fashion for stability and enhanced reliability. These grids are called 'microgrids'. This paper presents a rational method of building microgrids optimized for cost and subject to reliability constraints. The method is based on dynamic programming and consists of determining the optimal interconnection between microsources and load points, given their locations and the rights of way for possible interconnections. A new approach, called 'unit link addition', is also introduced. The method is demonstrated using a 22-bus system.

This paper presents methods for calculating the reliability of distribution systems with distributed energy resources (DER). The impact of intentional islanding of the DER units on the reliability is studied in detail. Different levels of automation are considered, starting from the existing network and continuing with increasing levels of intelligence in the network. Active network management (ANM) has emerged as the common, collective term in the UK for the automatic management and control of distributed energy resources (DER) in distribution networks. DER is the main driver of research and development in automation in the UK at present but network reliability performance enhancement remains the most common use of automation in power network applications. Power utility industry workgroups, academic/industrial consortia and individual research and manufacturing organizations have initiated major programs of advanced distribution automation investigative activity in recent years. Starting from the main drivers of ANM and progressing through industry wide (government sponsored) activities, this paper summarizes the recently completed and ongoing activities in all phases of research and development in the UK. In addition future directions of advanced distribution automation is discussed. These take account of the extending scope of advanced distribution automation (or ANM) that now encompasses all DER types and several other utility performance and asset management objectives.

As human beings, we share the trait of being able to experience extreme fear A variety of events can bring about this level of distress, some of which occur naturally and others that are caused by human action. One such event, terrorism, results from human action. In recent times, there has been a shift from conventional weapons for war and terrorism to a type of weapon of mass destruction (WMD) that includes chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and high yield explosives (CBRNE) weapons These types of weapons, in addition to their obvious effects, may be particularly capable of causing widespread fear, confusion, and stress that may alter the long-term health of affected communities and the larger community's sense of well-being.

Amplitude death is a coupling induced stabilization of a fixed point in nonlinear oscillators. This phenomenon cannot be observed in two identical nonlinear oscillators coupled by a diffusive connection. However, it has been analytically confirmed that a diffusive dynamic coupling can induce death. This study derives a necessary and sufficient condition for amplitude death in van der Pol oscillators coupled by a diffusive dynamic coupling. The well-known RC line (T-type) is used to implement the dynamic coupling.

In this paper we propose a modified version of the classical unforced Van der Pol oscillator that occurs when introducing a fractional-order time derivative in the state space equations that describes its dynamics. The resulting fractional-order Van der Pol oscillator is analyzed in the time and frequency domains, for several values of order's fractional derivative and, consequently, of the total system order. It is shown that the system can exhibit different output behavior depending on the total system order. Several numerical simulations and performance indices illustrate the fractional dynamics

The general aim is to develop a Venturi flow sensor for the inspiration line to be used in mechanical ventilation. This work is an advance for the development and construction of this sensor and to explain some of its characteristics in mechanical ventilation. The Mach number in this sensor grows with the pipe diameter, but it is less than 0.3 to diameters higher than 3mm, and according to the traditional bibliography it can be used as incompressible fluid for the design. For this reason the simulations were done between 2:1 and 6:1 to simulation pressures from 15 to 16.5 Psi (mechanical ventilation range). The results of these simulations are: it needs to consider the gas compressibility levels for Mach numbers smaller than 0.3 because the error of flow measure can be between 5 and 15% for the pattern of ideal gas and enter 7.5 to 20% for the Van Der Waals model above the incompressibility pattern, and these results were used for the construction of the small reduction the Venturi's pipe from 3 to 78 Lpm, taken from absolute pressure to complete the norm ISO9360.

In this paper an implementation of an electronic-learning system in the area of renewable energy resources is presented. According to written scenarios six teaching modules in this area of the science are realized. The control of the studying and testing modules is accomplished with the help of a Petri network. The structure of the teaching modules is presented in a few examples. This project, which is a subject of a university studying program, is going to be implemented in a special multimedia laboratory as part of the lecture and exercises of the subject of renewable energy resources.

Summary form only given. This paper present a novel approach to the SA communication that is tailored to this level of resolution of sensors using wireless integrated network sensors (WINS). We refer to the substation as a sensor field (SF) which includes the sensor nodes (SN) scattering inside as the end units for the entire system. The SF is communicating with the user/task manager node through a sink, which is responsible for an event area (EA), using multiple wireless communication paths. This paper present a technical model for the implementation technique of the WINS to the SA, as well as some economical aspects. MV systems was used in the examples and simulations that support the model and the whole approach that might raise the level of SA reliability towards fault tolerance. The authors believe that the WINS will became a serious player also in the flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) and in the distributed energy sources (DER) applications due to the topology of those systems and the interconnections common protocols developed these days.
