The paper consists of two parts dealing with the questions of design of a cylinder cam profile and synthesis of a technological machine optimal cyclogram. In part 2 two new methods of calculation of the cylinder cam groove profile are given in this learned work. The 1/sup st/ method consists in the carrying out of the cam groove profile correction, which has been calculated using the existing methods. The authors of this research work offer the schemes and the formulas which allow one to calculate the rotation angle of the rocker and the values of the present coordinates of the rocker, if this point moves along an arc of a circle. To give the smooth and continuous curves the authors made use the methods of interpolation of splines to the 5/sup th/ power. The 2/sup nd/ method is a reverse one. In part 2 state-of-the-art is described in short. It is offered to present the cyclogram of the machine as a directed graph, in which the basic functional groups and limiting operation are marked out. Special attention is drawn to the introduction of a technique for optimal synthesis of the technological machine cyclogram by applying the nonlinear optimisation method. The formulation of the standard network optimisation problem is given. Conclusions regarding the common character of the offered technique is made.

Time evolution of entanglement of N quantum dots are analyzed within the spin-1/2 van der Waals (or Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick) XY model. It is shown that, for a single dot initially excited and disentangled from the remaining unexcited dots, the maximum bipartite entanglement can be obtained in the systems of N=2, /spl middot//spl middot//spl middot/, 6 dots only.

We describe and propose the usage of a new codeword set to achieve the symbol rate (or spreading factor) adaptation in a CDMA communication network. Then we analyze the performance of a symbol-by-symbol, non-coherent, maximum-likelihood, blind spreading factor detector. The probability of false detection, which is also referred as the detection error rate (DER) in other studies, is analyzed for a multi-rate CDMA communication link with AWGN. The analysis shows that when the SNR is greater than 17 dB, the probability of false detection is around 10/sup -6/.

This paper describes a novel method for classification based on the evidential reasoning theory and the implementation presented by Peddle and Franklin. DER (Dynamic Evidential Reasoning) introduces some variations. It allows the incorporation of new evidence for the classifier in order to increment its accuracy, and it also defines a different decision rule. The inclusion of new evidence is a learning process where the precision of the classifier is analyzed using the Khat indicator. For this process, a set of samples belonging to a given, and a priori known, class is needed. This process changes the discriminate functions. The decision rule introduces two stages of decision. One stage is called "reject decision", where the maximum support value is analyzed, and the object to be classified is assigned to the unknown class if this support value is not "enough" (different approaches for the meaning of "enough" were studied). The other stage is called ambiguity decision, and the similarity between the maximum support and other supports of the rest of the classes are analyzed here. In this paper, an application of this method is presented, particularly, for the classification of different crops (during the growing season) in the area of Nebraska, using hyperspectral images. Some results are presented.

Concerns the modelling of biological control with rhythm, especially the mammalian circadian rhythm. Van der Pol oscillator networks have been proposed as a template to produce abstract circuit models that are capable of producing complex oscillatory and spiking patterns of behavior. Here, a particular case of a symmetrically coupled network is treated for its global behavior. It is shown that for a certain connection pattern the circuit is capable of producing globally asymptotically stable oscillations.

One potentially large source of underutilized distributed generation (DG) capacity exists in single-phase standby backup gensets on farms served from single-phase feeder laterals. Utilizing the excess capacity would require interconnecting to the utility system. Connecting single-phase gensets to the utility system presents some interesting technical issues that have not been previously investigated. This paper addresses several of the interconnection issues associated with this form of DG including voltage regulation, harmonics, overcurrent protection, and islanding. A significant amount of single-phase DG can be accommodated by the utility distribution system, but there are definite limitations due to the nature and location of the DG. These limitations may be more restrictive than is commonly assumed for three-phase DG installed on stronger parts of the electric distribution system.

In this paper, we analyze a forced Duffing-van der Pol oscillator with a diode by the use of a degenerate technique. We consider the case where the diode is assumed to operate as an ideal switch. In this case, the governing equation is represented by a constrained equation. From this equation, the Poincare/spl acute/ map is derived as a one-dimensional map. The generation of various interesting phenomena such as torus and chaos etc. are well explained by the Poincare/spl acute/ map.

Drosophila Argos (Aos), a secreted protein with an epidermal growth factor (EGF)-like domain, has been shown to inhibit the activation of the Drosophila EGF receptor (DER), However, it has not been determined whether Aos binds directly to DER or whether regulation of the DER activation occurs through some other mechanism, Using DER-expressing cells (DER/S2) and a recombinant DER extracellular domain-Fc fusion protein (DER-Fc), we have shown that Aos binds directly to the extracellular domain of DER with its carboxyl-terminal region, including the EGF-like domain. Furthermore, Aos can block the binding of secreted Spitz (sSpi), a transforming growth factor cr-like ligand of DER, to the extracellular domain of DER, We observed that sSpi stimulates the dimerization of both the soluble DER extracellular domain (sDER) and the intact DER in the DER/S2 cells and that Aos can block the sSpi-induced dimerization of both sDER and intact DER, Moreover, we have shown that, by directly interacting with DER, Aos and SpiAos (a chimeric protein that is composed of the N-terminal region of Spi and the C-terminal region of Aos) inhibit the dimerization and phosphorylation of DER that are induced by DER's overexpression in the absence of sSpi, These results indicate that Aos exerts its inhibitory function through dual molecular mechanisms: by blocking both the receptor dimerization and the binding of activating ligand to the receptor. This is the first description of this novel inhibitory mechanism for receptor tyrosine kinases.

Summary form only *** have observed modulation bandwidth enhancement to 28 GHz and evidence of reduced chirp, beyond the optimally tuned free running case, in strongly injection-locked DBR lasers. Bandwidth enhancement occurs because the total modal photon density depends on the phase between the master and slave fields, which varies during modulation due to the dependence of index on carrier density. This results in an increased coupling between the carriers and photons, giving an effectively higher differential gain. This effect appears to be stronger than the similar amplitude-phase coupling that occurs with detuned loading. Chirp reduction occurs only for very strong injection, which can be explained by the fact that chirp reduction can only be achieved for modulation frequencies less than the locking range, which increases with injected power. For higher frequencies, the chirp reduction due to detuned loading dominates.
