We survey a mechanism of a route to chaos due to a successive bifurcation process including a chain of homoclinic bifurcations observed in a modified Bonhoffer-van der Pol equation. The occurrence of homoclinic bifurcations is confirmed by using the linking number of limit cycles related with the stable manifold through an equilibrium.

There has been a growing interest in the field of geographic information systems (GIS) to model vague and uncertain regions for which information about a given property is available (e.g. soil structure). Vague and uncertain mean in general that some knowledge is available about the position and the circumference of such a region, but that the information is mostly imprecise or lacks certainty. Either this lack of precise data is inherent to the property (e.g. the degree of soil pollution), or it is due to physical limitations in making accurate measurements (e.g. temperature). There has been some research in modeling such regions using fuzzy regions. Fuzzy regions are modeled by means of broad boundaries. A broad boundary is defined as the area enclosed between two non-intersecting crisp edges including these edges, one completely located within the other. Inside and on the inner edge lay the points for which the definition of the property is completely met; outside and on the outer edge lay the points for which the definition of the property is not at all met. Points of the broad boundary meet the definition of the property up to a certain extent. Up to now, mainly the applicability of the traditional set operators on fuzzy regions (intersection, inclusion and union) has been addressed in the literature. Furthermore, almost no contributions treat the degree to which the points in the fuzzy region come up to the given definition of a property. We present two methods to solve the latter problem, both from a theoretical as well as from a practical point of view.

Nonlinear optical switches will be key devices in order to realize all-optical signal processing in order to meet increasing data speed requirements in future optical communications systems. Of various nonlinear optical effects, the photocarrier-induced band edge nonlinearity in semiconductor quantum wells has relatively large amplitude with a time constant in the 10-ps range depending on the carrier sweep-out time. It has been shown theoretically that a device based on such an effect and a vertical coupler structure can make an effective nonlinear optical switch. In the paper a new form of all-optical switch employing photocarrier-induced nonlinearity based on a vertical coupler structure, which allows high switch contrast, is reported.

Summary form given. Using a quasi-3D model incorporating the optical, carrier and temperature properties, we have numerically investigated the transverse mode behaviour of VCSELs with reliefs etched into the top surface. The aim of the modelling was to optimise the single fundamental transverse mode output power with respect to oxide aperture, relief diameter and etch depth. A circular shape is chosen for the relief because this will match the circularly symmetric profile of the fundamental mode, enabling the mode to retain most of its mode intensity within the unetched low-loss region.

As dense-WDM architectures become pervasive in long-haul, metropolitan and local-area fiber-optic networks, the desire to have lasers that emit at any of several hundred ITU-grid wavelengths from a single waveguide increases. Applications include use in programmable WDM source modules, wavelength converter modules, and opaque optical switches. This tutorial reviews a number of promising widely tunable (>30 nm @ 1550 nm) laser technologies and attempt to outline some of their attributes.

Distributed energy resources (DER) are in transition from the lab to the marketplace. The defining characteristic of DER is that they are active devices installed at the distribution system level, as opposed to the transmission level. While no specific size range has been defined, most distribution systems would have difficulty accommodating distributed generating resources larger than 10 MW/MVA at any single location and many systems may have even lower limits. Distributed energy resources include generation resources such as fuel cells, micro-turbines, photovoltaics, and hybrid power plants or storage technologies such as batteries, flywheels, ultra capacitors and superconducting magnetic energy storage. They may also consist of dynamic reactive power control devices and possibly customer end-use load controls. This paper summarizes technical requirements for large-scale integration of active devices into the existing distribution infrastructure to maintain or enhance reliability. The paper is intended to lay the groundwork for a multi-year program of research necessary to facilitate the transition to such a system. The scope of the research includes consideration of control systems including the sensors and instruments necessary to gather intelligence for real-time power management and dispatch or coordination among distributed generation resources and with utility distribution systems. It also includes improved modeling techniques to better characterize the technologies and their impacts on the distribution (and ultimately the transmission) system.

We measured transport parameters of semiinsulating (SI) and low temperature (LT) GaAs using the van der Pauw method. A detailed procedure for semiinsulating sample preparation and for obtaining reliable experimental data is given. The advantage of using a constant voltage source instead of a constant current source is demonstrated in the case of high resistivity semiconductor materials.

This paper is the first independent comparison between BSIM4 and the van der Ziel models for induced gate noise. Despite the very different modeling strategies, BSIM4 successfully reproduces the classical van der Ziel model, introducing only small errors in the correlated noise term. In the case of practical circuits, noticeable errors usually arise for very low gate bias conditions yet the errors are acceptably small. Therefore, the two models can be considered as being equivalent to each other in most practical circuits, including nongrounded source conditions of operation.

In the non retarded regime, atom-surface van der Waals (vW) interactions originate in the forces between the fluctuating atomic dipole and its instantaneous image linked to polarisation charges induced in the surface. vW interactions which are generally attractive (distance law in 1/z3) are of fundamental importance in many fields of physics. The existence of vW repulsion has recently been demonstrated when there is a resonant coupling between the fluctuating atom dipole and a surface resonance. We have started an experimental study of surface-induced wave function mixing between the 3P/sub 0/ and 3P/sub 1/ metastable states of argon. A thermal metastable argon beam is velocity selected thanks to a time of flight (TOF) technique.

Technology improvements in fuel cells, microturbines and energy storage devices have provided the opportunity for dispersed energy resources at the distribution level. At the same time, deregulation has begun to allow for the provision of various ancillary services, such as, load following. This paper investigates some possible approaches to load following, at the distribution level. An algorithm is proposed for the fast three phase load flow calculations needed to simulate the slow dynamics of load following. We simulate a typical distribution system where several distributed energy resources have been added. Using simplified dynamics for the sources and loads, strategies to provide load following without increased unbalance are suggested. We identify modeling improvements that are needed to fully investigate these algorithms.
