We present a new type of multiresolution, called oblique multiresolution (OMR), necessary in the decision context. All the fundamental properties of OMR are given and justified. The aim is to develop a multiresolution analysis which provide a redundant decomposition for use in the detection and classification application. The signal decomposition is computed with pyramidal algorithms. We give a necessary-sufficient conditions to reconstruct the signal from its oblique multiresolution decomposition and show how to compute reconstructing filters.< >

We present a geometric factor applicable to a wide range of device geometries of the van der Pauw dual configuration. Such a configuration allows a direct retrieval of the Hall mobility in a single measurement of the magnetic-field-induced imbalance in output current. In view of scaling considerations, the geometric factor is characterized simply in terms of device aspect ratio (L/W) and relative electrode separation (d/W). The factor, which is based on numerical computations, overcomes the limitations inherent in the existing form that has been analytically obtained for an infinitesimally small electrode separation. Hence, it is now possible to design practical device geometries which readily lend themselves to in situ measurement and characterization of the material or process in question, without being constrained by photolithography limitations.

The authors describe a technique and a tool supporting partial evaluation of Fortran programs, i.e. their specialization for specific values of their input variables. They aim at understanding old programs, which have become very complex due to numerous extensions. From a given Fortran program and these values of its input variables, the tool provides a simplified program, which behaves like the initial one for the specific values. This tool uses mainly constant propagation and simplification of alternatives to one of their branches. The tool is specified in inference rules and operates by induction on the Fortran abstract syntax. These rules are compiled into Prolog by the Centaur/Fortran environment.< >

Neutron dose equivalent rates have been measured for 800-MeV proton beam spills at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility. Neutron detectors were used to measure the neutron dose levels at a number of locations for each beam-spill test, and neutron energy spectra were measured for several beam-spill tests. Estimates of expected levels for various detector locations were made using a simple analytical model developed for 800-MeV proton beam spills. A comparison of measurements and model estimates indicates that the model is reasonably accurate in estimating the neutron dose equivalent rate for simple shielding geometries. The model fails for more complicated shielding geometries, where indirect contributions to the dose equivalent rate can dominate.< >

A computer oriented algorithmic method is proposed to overcome the serious disadvantage of the classical Pade approximation technique often resulting in unstable reduced models from stable high order systems. For a desired kth order reduced model, the 2kth time moment is adjusted for stability while the initial (2k-1) time moments of the original system are retained in the reduced model. Some typical numerical examples show that this method gives a stable model with better time and frequency response matching properties.

The signal-averaged electrocardiogram (ECG) was recorded and analyzed in 30 postinfarction patients with ventricular tachycardia and long late potentials, and in 30 controls with normal signal-averaged ECG to investigate whether the results of spectral temporal mapping of the signal-averaged ECG are disturbed in patients with long late potentials, and to calculate a formula for computing the number of ECF segments to be analyzed in such patients. When a new formula, based on the difference between the total filtered and the standard QRS durations, was used, the identification of patients with ventricular tachycardia and long late potentials was significantly improved.< >
