A description is given of the Advanced Multimedia Information Distribution System (AMIDS), which will provide high-capacity, secure, low-probability-of-detection/intercept (LPD/LPI), and interoperable communications technologies and services for distributed/dispersed systems. The AMIDS program is also developing communications services that allow dispersed personnel to communicate with each other as if they were located in the same room. Chaos in the forced van der Pol oscillator including a pair of diodes is investigated. First, the authors show that the normal forced van der Pol equation exhibits chaos. The generation of chaos is explained by a Lorenz plot. Secondly, they analyze chaos rigorously by using a piecewise-linear technique and a degeneration technique which corresponds to an idealized case where the diode is assumed to operate as an ideal switch. In this case, the Poincare map is derived strictly as one-dimensional mapping which is a noninvertible return mapping of a circle. This mapping clarifies the mechanism of chaos.< >

The authors present a novel analytic model for the potential and electron distribution in the channel-depth direction for the buried-channel (BC) MOSFET (metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor). The purpose of the model is to aid in the fundamental physical understanding of the operational modes of the BC-MOSFET and the mechanisms affecting these modes. Using Poisson's equation, individual analytic expressions are formulated to predict the potential distribution and electron concentration profile under conditions of depletion, inversion, pinchoff, and accumulation as a function of the gate bias, substrate bias, and applied channel potential. While the potential distribution in the channel-depth direction enables the band-bending within the device to be visualized, the signal electron concentration profile leads to an easy physical interpretation of the modes of operation and the location of mobile charge relative to the channel surface: this is important for mobility and device speed considerations. In addition, the model can be used for device design.< >

A practical method is described for the three-dimensional determination of the position, shape, and attitude of a hydrophone array towed from a surface vessel. It provides successive snapshots of the array configuration with a maximum rate of about three per minute. The method is intended as an alternative to the use of fixed test ranges and provides results suitable for validating computer models of array motion. It uses the travel-time differences of impulsive waves measured across the array. The waves are generated by two explosive charges dropped from consorts. Results of a typical experiment are presented as an illustrative example. The array position relative to the tow ship is obtained to within an accuracy of a few metres.< >

Type-B ('systematic') uncertainty contributions are carefully evaluated and are less than 0.004 p.p.m. (1 sigma ). Type-A or random contributions are 0.006 p.p.m. ( sigma , 20 min.) in a transfer of the quantized Hall resistance R/sub H/ (i=2) to 100 Omega . Measurements relating h/2e/sup 2/ to Omega /sub VSI/ maintained by the Van Swinden Laboratory are presented, showing agreement to 0.09 p.p.m. with the results of other national standards institutes.< >

The authors describe a 14-ns 1-Mb CMOS SRAM (static random-access memory) with both 1M word*1-b and 256 K word*4-b organizations. The desired organization is selected by forcing the state of an external pin. The fast access time is achieved by the use of a shorter divided-word-line (DWL) structure, a highly sensitive sense amplifier, a gate-controlled data-bus driver, and a dual-level precharging technique. The 0.7- mu m double-aluminum and triple-polysilicon process technology with trench isolation offers a memory cell size of 41.6 mu m/sup 2/ and a chip size of 86.6 mm/sup 2/. The variable bit-organization function reduces the testing time while keeping the measurement accuracy of the access times.< >
