In this work, a novel Voronoi-based diagram is introduced which assigns a distinct region to each sensor in the presence of obstacles such that the regions are mutually disjoint and if one sensor cannot cover a point inside its region, no other sensor can detect it either. The proposed diagram called obstructed guaranteed additively weighted (OGAW) Voronoi diagram is the main tool for developing the sensor deployment algorithms in a network of mobile sensors with nonidentical sensing ranges in the presence of obstacles. Then, two algorithms are developed to improve the prioritized coverage when the exact location of sensors is not available due to measurement error. The developed algorithms are iterative, and in each iteration each sensor calculates its new location based on the value of a priority function of the points inside the corresponding OGAW Voronoi region and moves toward it such that the overall weighted coverage of the network is increased. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the developed algorithms.

Power and performance tradeoffs are critical and challenging issues faced by cloud service providers (CSPs) while managing their data centers. On the one hand, CSPs strive to reduce power consumption of their data centers to not only decrease their energy costs but to also reduce adverse impact on the environment. On the other hand, CSPs must deliver performance expected by the applications hosted in their cloud in accordance with predefined Service Level Agreements (SLAs). Not doing so will lead to loss of customers and thereby major revenue losses for the CSPs. Addressing these dual set of challenges is hard for the CSPs because power management and performance assurance are conflicting objectives, particularly in the context of multi-tenant cloud systems where multiple virtual machines (VMs) may be hosted on a single physical server. The problem becomes even harder when real-time applications are hosted in these VMs. To address these challenges and make appropriate tradeoffs, we present iPlace, which is an intelligent and tunable power-and performance-aware VM placement middleware. The placement strategy is based on a two-level artificial neural network which predicts (1) CPU usage at the first level, and (2) power consumption and performance of a host machine at the second level that uses the predicted CPU usage. The efficacy of iPlace is evaluated in the context of a VM consolidation algorithm that is applied to running virtual machines and host machines in a private cloud.

Sensor deployment is an important problem in mobile wireless sensor networks, which affects the performance and lifetime of the network. This paper presents a distributed deployment algorithm for mobile sensors. Our algorithm is compared with a simulated annealing based algorithm for deployment with the metrics such as coverage, uniformity, time and distance and the Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

The effectiveness of cluster-based distributed sensor networks depends to a large extent on the coverage provided by the sensor deployment. In this paper, an improved visual forces based sensor deployment algorithm, namely URE-VFA (Uncovered Region Exploration and Visual Force algorithm), is proposed to enhance the coverage after an initial random deployment of sensors. The new algorithm decides a new location on not only the combination of attractive and repulsive forces but the uncovered region around sensors. Once the effective sensor positions are identified, a one-time movement with energy consideration incorporated is carried out, i.e., the sensors are redeployed to these positions. Compared with the performance of VFA, the new algorithm provides better coverage than that by VFA in less number of iterations with the same number of sensor nodes. Compared with that of UREA, new algorithm reduces the average mobile distance of nodes so as to save energy consumption. The simulation shows this algorithm provides better coverage than that by VFA, and it reduces power consumption.

This paper use grid to describe sense field of sensor networks, use the theory of probability to describe the imprecise detection coverage for sensors to sense information of target node. It constructs a framework of resource management for sensor networks. We design the sensor deployment algorithms with static sensor nodes by greedy heuristic strategy and different optimization objects. We present several deployment algorithms for local sense field of sensor networks. Our aim is using fewer sensors to get better information collection effect. We discuss the deployment of sensor nodes, the optimization of deployment structure and capability of every algorithm.

Wireless sensor networks in relic protection:deployment methodology and cross-layer design

This paper describes the deployment optimization technology and the cross-layer design of a surveil-lance WSN system applied in relic *** the typical technical challenges in the applicationcontext of relic protection,we firstly propose a deployment technology based on ant colony optimization al-gorithm(DT-ACO)to overcome the difficulties in communication connectivity and sensing ***,DT-ACO minimizes the overall cost of the system as much as *** we proposea novel power-aware cross-layer scheme(PACS)to facilitate adjustable system lifetime and *** performance analysis shows that we achieve lower device cost,significant extension of thesystem lifetime and improvement on the data delivery rate compared with the traditional methods.
