Recent advances in three dimensional display technologies and the growing efforts put in the production of three dimensional videos are intensely demanding for new, more efficient three dimensional content representation formats. One promising format is the so-called multiview plus depth format where multiple views of the observed scene are represented together with a per pixel depth map. Naturally, this format requires to efficiently code not only the video views but also the depth data. In this context, this paper proposes a novel depth map codec encoding the depth data by means of a binary tree triangular decomposition and reconstructing the depth map values by means of a triangle based planar approximation. For depth maps related to typical three dimensional video contents, the proposed depth map codec outperforms both the H.264/AVC standard with all intra coding modes enabled and the JPEG standard. In particular, for the same objective reconstruction quality, the proposed codec allows an average bitrate reduction of 60% and 90% regarding H.264/AVC Intra and JPEG coding, respectively.

In this paper we present a novel image quality assessment technique for evaluating virtual synthesized views in the context of multi-view video. In particular, Free Viewpoint Videos are generated from uncompressed color views and their compressed associated depth maps by means of the View Synthesis Reference Software, provided by MPEG. Prior to the synthesis step, the original depth maps are encoded with different coding algorithms thus leading to the creation of additional artifacts in the synthesized views. The core of proposed wavelet-based metric is in the registration procedure performed to align the synthesized view and the original one, and in the skin detection that has been applied considering that the same distortion is more annoying if visible on human subjects rather than on other parts of the scene. The effectiveness of the metric is evaluated by analyzing the correlation of the scores obtained with the proposed metric with Mean Opinion Scores collected by means of subjective tests. The achieved results are also compared against those of well known objective quality metrics. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed metric.

depth map compression is important for efficient network transmission of 3D visual data in texture-plus-depth format, where the observer can synthesize an image of a freely chosen viewpoint via depth-image-based rendering (DIBR) using received neighboring texture and depth maps as anchors. Unlike texture maps, depth maps exhibit unique characteristics like smooth interior surfaces and sharp edges that can be exploited for coding gain. In this paper, we propose a multi-resolution approach to depth map compression using previously proposed graph-based transform (GBT). The key idea is to treat smooth surfaces and sharp edges of large code blocks separately and encode them in different resolutions: encode edges in original high resolution (HR) to preserve sharpness, and encode smooth surfaces in low-pass-filtered and down-sampled low resolution (LR) to save coding bits. Because GBT does not filter across edges, it produces small or zero high-frequency components when coding smooth-surface depth maps and leads to a compact representation in the transform domain. By encoding down-sampled surface regions in LR GBT, we achieve representation compactness for a large block without the high computation complexity associated with an adaptive large-block GBT. At the decoder, encoded LR surfaces are up-sampled and interpolated while preserving encoded HR edges. Experimental results show that our proposed multi-resolution approach using GBT reduced bitrate by 68% compared to native H. 264 intra with DCT encoding original HR depth maps, and by 55% compared to single-resolution GBT encoding small blocks.

In this paper, we propose an efficient depth video coding method for the 3D video (3DV) system. Since the boundary information of depth video significantly affects the rendering quality in the 3DV system, the proposed method reduces the loss of the boundary information by producing precise intra prediction modes. The characteristics of depth video are analyzed and considered to modify the previous geometry-adaptive block partitioning in the proposed method. The proposed method guarantees a better performance of intra prediction than the method of the H.264/AVC. Experimental results have shown that 0.33 dB coding gain in terms of PSNR and subjective quality improvement of synthesized views are achieved by the proposed method.

In general, a depth image in a multi-view video plus depth (MVD) format is employed as additional data to synthesize a virtual texture view. In this paper, the proposed method generates a virtual depth view through depth view synthesis and then adaptively uses the synthesized virtual depth view during encoding, according to an evaluation on effect of the synthesized depth view on the multi-view rendering quality. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly reduces a depth image coding bit rate without degrading the rendering quality.

Incolour plus depth map 3D video, depth map is a luminance image that aids the virtual views generation. Since it is not the final image viewed by end user, the conventional depth map compression method, which minimizes the pixel errors of the depth map, introduces more distortions to the virtual rendered images. In this paper, a novel motion estimation scheme for depth map coding is proposed. By employing rendered view distortion in Rate-Distortion Optimization, the optimal Motion Vector is determined to improve the rendered views quality. An effective Lagrange multiplier is also derived. Experimental results illustrate that 34%-63% of bit can be saved comparing to the conventional motion estimation method.

Distributed Video coding of multi-view data and depth maps is an interesting and challenging research field, whose interest is growing thanks to the recent advances in depth estimation and the development of affordable devices able to acquire depth information. In applications like video surveillance and object tracking, the availability of depth data can be beneficial and allow for more accurate processing. In these scenarios, the encoding complexity is typically limited and therefore distributed coding approaches are desirable. In this paper a novel algorithm for distributed compression of depth maps exploiting corresponding color information is proposed. Due to the high correlation of the motion in color and corresponding depth videos, motion information from the decoded color signal can effectively be exploited to generate accurate side information for the depth signal, allowing for higher rate-distortion performance without increasing the delay at the decoder side. The proposed scheme has been evaluated against state-of-the-art distributed video coding techniques applied on depth data. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can provide PSNR improvement between 2.18 dB and 3.40 dB on depth data compared to the reference DISCOVER decoder, for GOP 2 and QCIF resolution.

3D video representations usually associate to each view a depth map with the corresponding geometric information. Many compression schemes have been proposed for multiview video and for depth data, but the exploitation of the correlation between the two representations to enhance compression performances is still an open research issue. This paper presents a novel compression scheme that exploits a segmentation of the color data to predict the shape of the different surfaces in the depth map. Then each segment is approximated with a parameterized plane. In case the approximation is sufficiently accurate for the target bit rate, the surface coefficients are compressed and transmitted. Otherwise, the region is coded using a standard H.264/AVC Intra coder. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme permits to outperformthe standard H.264/AVC Intra codec on depth data and can be effectively included into multi-view plus depth compression schemes.

depth map compression is important for compact representation of 3D visual data in "texture-plus-depth" format, where texture and depth maps of multiple closely spaced viewpoints are encoded and transmitted. A decoder can then freely synthesize any chosen intermediate view via depth-image-based rendering (DIBR) using neighboring coded texture and depth maps as anchors. In this work, we leverage on the observation that "pixels of similar depth have similar motion" to efficiently encode depth video. Specifically, we divide a depth block containing two zones of distinct values (e. g., foreground and background) into two sub-blocks along the dividing edge before performing separate motion prediction. While doing such arbitrarily shaped sub-block motion prediction can lead to very small prediction residuals (resulting in few bits required to code them), it incurs an overhead to losslessly encode dividing edges for sub-block identification. To minimize this overhead, we first devise an edge prediction scheme based on linear regression to predict the next edge direction in a contiguous contour. From the predicted edge direction, we assign probabilities to each possible edge direction using the von Mises distribution, which are subsequently inputted to a conditional arithmetic codec for entropy coding. Experimental results show an average overall bitrate reduction of up to 30% over classical H.264 implementation.

Recent work has highlighted the importance of incorporating geometry information into the compression of depth maps. In prior approaches however the geometry information is not resolution scalable nor amenable to embedded coding. In this paper we propose a novel compression strategy for depth maps that incorporates geometry information while achieving the goals of scalability and embedded representation. Our scheme involves two separate image pyramid structures, one for breakpoints and other for sub-band samples produced by a breakpoint-adaptive transform. Breakpoints capture geometric attributes and are amenable to scalable coding. We develop an R-D optimization framework for the breakpoint data. We also use a variation of the EBCOT scheme to produce embedded bit-streams for both the breakpoint and sub-band data, allowing them to be independently and incrementally sequenced based on R-D considerations.
