Metallogeny of the Paramillos de Uspallata Pb-Zn-Ag vein deposit in the Cuyo Rift Basin, Argentina

The Paramillos de Uspallata deposit, previously considered as genetically linked to a Miocene porphyry deposit, is located in the Mesozoic Cuyo Basin, which was formed during the beginning of the break-up of Gondwana. In the present study, both previous information and new geological, mineralogical, and isotopic data allowed outlining a new descriptive model for this deposit. Stratigraphic and structural controls allowed considering this deposit as contemporaneous with the Mesozoic rifting, with the mineralization resulting from a Pb-Zn stage followed by an Ag-Cu-Pb stage. The hydrothermal fluids were found to have low temperature and low to moderate salinity, and to result from the mixing between metamorphic and meteoric fluids, with the lead sourced by the igneous Paleozoic basement and the sulfur partly derived from a magmatic source. These characteristics allow describing Paramillos de Uspallata as Pb-Zn-Ag veins hosted in clastic sedimentary sequences genetically linked to a rift basin and redefining it as detachment-related mineralization. The aim of this research lies in the development of a credit-scoring model using logistic regression and multivariate discriminant analysis applied to 1500 individual loans from Moroccan MFIs. This model combines both behavioral and descriptive data related to the borrowers (age, activity, level of education, number of unpaid debts, number of loans, etc.) and others related to the institution (amount of credit, duration of credit, number of concluded loans per portfolio manager etc.). The results showed the importance of having a larger sample, a deep enough history on the behavior of the customer, and also more information about variables related to the client’s activity and its performance to better predict the default.

The increasing complexity in design activities leads designers to collaborate and share knowledge within distributed teams. This makes designers use systems such as knowledge management systems to reach their goal. In this article, our aim is to investigate on improving the use of knowledge management systems by defining a framework for modelling knowledge transfer in such context. The proposed framework is partly based on reuse of existing models found in the literature and on a participant observation methodology. Then, we tested this framework through several case studies presented in this article. These investigations enable us to observe, define and model more finely the knowledge dynamics that occur between knowledge workers and knowledge management systems.

Network modeling is now a widespread practice in systems biology, as well as in integrative genomics, and it constitutes a rich and diverse scientific research field. A conceptually clear understanding of the reasoning behind the main existing modeling approaches, and their associated technical terminologies, is required to avoid confusions and accelerate the transition towards an undeniable necessary more quantitative, multidisciplinary approach to biology. Herein, we focus on two main network-based modeling approaches that are commonly used depending on the information available and the intended goals: inference-based methods and system dynamics approaches. As far as data-based network inference methods are concerned, they enable the discovery of potential functional influences among molecular components. On the other hand, experimentally grounded network dynamical models have been shown to be perfectly suited for the mechanistic study of developmental processes. How do these two perspectives relate to each other? In this chapter, we describe and compare both approaches and then apply them to a given specific developmental module. Along with the step-by-step practical implementation of each approach, we also focus on discussing their respective goals, utility, assumptions, and associated limitations. We use the gene regulatory network (GRN) involved in Arabidopsis thaliana Root Stem Cell Niche patterning as our illustrative example. We show that descriptive models based on functional genomics data can provide important background information consistent with experimentally supported functional relationships integrated in mechanistic GRN models. The rationale of analysis and modeling can be applied to any other well-characterized functional developmental module in multicellular organisms, like plants and animals. less

Acquiring English as a second language via print: The task for deaf children

Only a minority of profoundly deaf children read at age-level. We contend this reflects cognitive and linguistic impediments from lack of exposure to a natural language in early childhood, as well as the inherent difficulty of learning English only through the written modality. Yet some deaf children do acquire English via print. The current paper describes a theoretical model of how children could, in principle, acquire a language via reading and writing. The model describes stages of learning which represent successive, conceptual insights necessary for second/foreign language learning via print. Our model highlights the logical difficulties present when one cannot practice a language outside of reading/writing, such as the necessity of translating to a first language, the need for explicit instruction, and difficulty that many deaf children experience in understanding figurative language. Our model explains why learning to read is often a protracted process for deaf children and why many fail to make progress after some initial success. Because language acquisition is thought to require social interaction, with meaning cued by extralinguistic context, the ability of some deaf individuals to acquire language through print represents an overlooked human achievement worthy of greater attention by cognitive scientists. Appearance model is one of the most important components for online visual tracking. An effective appearance model needs to strike the right balance between being adaptive, to account for appearance change, and being conservative, to re-track the object after it loses tracking (e.g., due to occlusion). Most conventional appearance models focus on one aspect out of the two, and hence are not able to achieve the right balance. In this paper, we approach this problem by a max-margin learning framework collaborating a descriptive component and a discriminative component. Particularly, the two components are for different purposes and with different lifespans. One forms a robust object model, and the other tries to distinguish the object from the current background. Taking advantages of their complementary roles, the components improve each other and collaboratively contribute to a shared score function. Besides, for realtime implementation, we also propose a series of optimization and sample-management strategies. Experiments over 30 challenging videos demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed tracker. Our method generally outperforms the existing state-of-the-art methods.

Evaluation of Performance of Predictive models for Deoxynivalenol in Wheat

The aim of this study was to evaluate the performance of two predictive models for deoxynivalenol contamination of wheat at harvest in the Netherlands, including the use of weather forecast data and external model validation. Data were collected in a different year and from different wheat fields than data used for model development. The two models were run for six preset scenarios, varying in the period for which weather forecast data were used, from zero-day (historical data only) to a 13-day period around wheat flowering. model predictions using forecast weather data were compared to those using historical data. Furthermore, model predictions using historical weather data were evaluated against observed deoxynivalenol contamination of the wheat fields. Results showed that the use of weather forecast data rather than observed data only slightly influenced model predictions. The percent of correct model predictions, given a threshold of 1,250g/kg (legal limit in European Union), was about 95% for the two models. However, only three samples had a deoxynivalenol concentration above this threshold, and the models were not able to predict these samples correctly. It was concluded that two- week weather forecast data can reliable be used in descriptive models for deoxynivalenol contamination of wheat, resulting in more timely model predictions. The two models are able to predict lower deoxynivalenol contamination correctly, but model performance in situations with high deoxynivalenol contamination needs to be further validated. This will need years with conducive environmental conditions for deoxynivalenol contamination of wheat.

This paper proposes a descriptive approach for context-based human activity analysis through an hierarchical framework in a scene understanding application. Each human movement with respect to himself, others and scene, can arise different layers of human activities analysis, which usually investigated separately depend on the application. Human behaviour can not be analysed properly, since the all different layers of information were not considered. The effect of using the different layers of information to increase the accuracy of the analysis is presented in the study. The contributions are, using different information layers such as human body parts movement and human-object interaction, in 3D space, to improve human activity analysis, and proposing a probabilistic and descriptive model, based on a well-known human movement descriptor and Bayesian Network (BN) approach. Thus, based on the mentioned framework, the model is generalizable and flexible which are necessary for having such an applicable system. The capability of the proposed approach is presented in the experiment's section.

Developing a Framework for Describing and Comparing Indoor Maps

Traditionally, research on cartography has primarily been focused on visualisation of outdoor environments. Recently, however, indoor cartography has increasingly attracted attention both from the academic world and from commercial enterprises. Indoor cartography calls for markedly different visualisation strategies. Frameworks for describing map communication and use exist for general maps. But so far, no such framework exists for indoor maps. This article presents and discusses several map types for indoor spaces found in the literature and commercial products. The different characteristics of each one are identified and described. On this basis, a framework for indoor maps is developed and presented. Arbitrary indoor maps can be described by their properties using the framework. This allows indoor maps to be compared and described using a common platform.
