Adsorption plays an important role in carbon dioxide sequestration and methane recovery processes in deep coal seams. If the effects of coal physical properties on its gas adsorption capacity are considered, it increases with vitrinite content and pressure and reduces with liptinite, mineral matter, moisture contents, and temperature and follows a U-shaped variation with carbon content. Furthermore, CO2 has higher adsorption capacity compared to other gases. There are two main methods to estimate the amount of gas adsorbed in a coal seam, which are called direct and indirect methods. The latter method is more common for coal. In the direct method, the volume of gas released from a coal mass into a sealed desorption canister is measured, and under the indirect method, adsorption isotherms and empirical relations are used. However, any of those methods are unable to count the effect of swelling-induced strain and, therefore, fail in measuring the absolute adsorption in coal. Moreover, among various adsorption models, Langmuir and Dubnin-Radushkevich (D-R) equations are the most widely using models. However, since gas can be absorbed through both adsorption and absorption processes for coal, it is important to have an additional term to count the missing absorption mechanism in both the Langmuir and D-R models. Finally, a new descriptive model for gas adsorption capacity of coal as a function of effective factors is proposed. The new model is based on the existing D-R equation, which was modified by inserting a new expression for the term of micropore capacity. Two types (CO2 and N-2) of gas adsorption data for coal from five different locations (British Colombia and Alberta in Canada and Victoria, Sydney and Bowen in Australia) at three different temperatures (273, 296.5, and 318 K) were considered for the model development. According to the model results, new gas adsorption equations can fairly well accurately predict the adsorption capacity in coal.

A media space provides the communications channels to support the interactions between people at different locations using video and audio links and shared access to data. This paper looks at a telehealth implementation of outpatient consultations for tertiary-level paediatric surgical patients, consultations which exercise a high degree of interpersonal and data-sharing communication between the participants. Framing the telehealth situation as a media space invites the designer of the telehealth system to access a large body of prior work which identifies and discusses many of the issues that will arise in this complex multi-participant telehealth context. This paper presents, as a case study, a two-year project that developed and deployed a whole-of-room telehealth system in partnership with surgeons from The Royal Children's Hospital (RCH), Melbourne, Australia. Based on observations at the hospital and discussions with the surgeons, a descriptive model of the proposed telehealth consultation (and of its deployment in a clinical trial) was developed. This descriptive model became the vehicle for gathering requirements and for design and evaluation of the telehealth system. The evaluation contained four major components: two human factors studies, an observational study of training and process change for the clinicians and a clinical trial of the resulting system. The case study demonstrates the flow of design decisions from concept to deployment. It highlights the gaps that appeared in the descriptive model when the transition was made from the laboratory to deployment in the hospital. The conclusion is that, at this relatively unexplored level of telehealth, there are likely to be gaps in such a descriptive model that are not uncovered by laboratory experiments or by analytic evaluation but emerge only during a clinical trial with actual patients, clinicians and patient data.

In this work, a descriptive model was established for the longitudinal structure of wet pneumatic spliced yarn. Compared to classical spliced yarns which contain a symmetrical twisting zone our microscopic analysis revealed that elastic spliced yarns present two more asymmetrical twisted zones. Our study shows that the wet pneumatic splice can be defined by six parameters which are: zones of splice, length of each zone, splice length, number of twist turns on each zone, two elastane filament ends and centre x coordinates. These parameters were tested for 167 specimens. Analysing this database, we developed a descriptive model which helps to understand the spliced elastic yarn structure.

This paper discusses the use of highly parameterized semi-mechanistic nonlinear models with particular reference to the PARJIB crop response model of Reid (2002) [Yield response to nutrient supply across a wide range of conditions 1. model derivation. Field Crops Research 77, 161-171]. Compared to empirical linear approaches, such models promise improved generality of application but present considerable challenges for estimation. Some success has been achieved with a fitting approach that uses a Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm starting from initial values determined by a genetic algorithm. Attention must be paid, however, to correlations between parameter estimates and an approach is described to identify these based on large simulated datasets. This work illustrates the value for the scientist in exploring the correlation structure in mechanistic or semi-mechanistic models. Such information might be used to reappraise the structure of the model itself, especially if the experimental evidence is not strong enough to allow estimation of a parameter free of assumptions about the values of others. Thus statistical modelling and analysis can complement mechanistic studies, making more explicit what is known and what is not known about the processes being modelled and guiding further research.

Following a description of previous research and existing approaches to understand burr formation in grinding, experimental investigations in flat surface grinding of tempered steel are described. This paper deals with the essential technique for self-organizing metamorphosis of self-reconfigurable robots. A general model describing self-reconfigurable robots is proposed;the model is capable of expressing the topological structure of typical 2-D and 3-D self-reconfigurable robots. Afterwards, a self-organizing metamorphic strategy of self-reconfigurable robots, based on full-discrete local intelligence, is proposed. The modules concurrently process the local interactive information. A reasonable motion sequence for modules can be obtained by means of determining and evolving the rules of modules motion. Consequently, the global self-organizing behavior will be obtained, and the complexity of the algorithm is reduced. Simulation samples are provided to illustrate this approach and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.
