Alcohol use is prevalent among military personnel, with many engaging in binge drinking behaviors. Military trainees are unique in that they experience an enforced alcohol ban for eight weeks while in Basic Military Training (BMT). However, they are also typically young adults, who consume alcohol at higher rates than any other age group. The current study aimed to describe alcohol consumption among trainees, determine when, where, and with whom Airmen drank for the first time during Technical Training, and if these patterns were significantly different based on descriptive norms (i.e., beliefs about how many other individuals engage in a certain behavior) related to alcohol use given that most military members consume alcohol. Lastly, we aimed to determine if alcohol consumption or potential alcohol use disorders (AUDs) were significantly different based on descriptive norms. Materials and Methods. Airmen (N = 599) were recruited at Joint Base San Antonio Fort Sam Houston during their last week of Technical Training to complete a survey. Study procedures were approved by the 59th Medical Wing Institutional Review Board. Participants were asked about their beliefs related to how many other Airmen drink alcohol (i.e., less than 50 percent, 50 percent or greater), their own experiences with alcohol (e.g., how much they drink compared to consumption before military service, blackouts after drinking during Technical Training), and when, where, and with whom they consumed alcohol for the first time after beginning military training. Results. Over half of Airmen reported not engaging in drinking behaviors during Technical Training. Among those who reported drinking one or more drinks during Technical Training, most reported drinking the same amount or less than they did prior to BMT. Majority of Airmen reported that they had maybe experienced blackouts from drinking since Technical Training.

This report covers research conducted in 2019-2020 for the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences that extends an ongoing program of research initiated in 2007. The initial goal of this research program was to develop a new non-cognitive measure, the Cadet Background and Experience Form (CBEF), to help inform the award of ROTC four-year scholarships. The operational CBEF continues to be valid for this purpose. This report describes the administration and analysis of CBEF data collected from four-year scholarship applicants and cadets at the ROTC Advanced Camp. The evidence in these samples suggests that the CBEF is predictive of key outcomes, including Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT), Grade Point Average (GPA), Outcome Metrics Score (OMS), and disenrollment, in both samples. These results are consistent with the findings of previous large-scale longitudinal validation analyses and are discussed in context of the current samples and previous research efforts.

The U.S. Army faces two analytical and management challenges. The first is that its data are often locked away in siloed and proprietary databases. The second is that Army team members, such as data scientists, lack access to modern, common analytical tools. One potential solution to both problems is cloud migration: moving Army data to remotely accessed data environments offering scalable computer processing, data storage, and analytic services. To pilot the feasibility of this approach and gain insight, we developed a case study within Army Contracting Command (ACC) to see if there is a simple and effective way to overcome these challenges. We found that moving data to the cloud for analysis is effective and efficient and that there is a quick path forward to cost savings for the Army.

Today's dynamic and increasingly competitive market had expanded complexities for global businesses pressuring companies to start leveraging on Big Data solutions in order to sustain the global competitions by becoming more data-driven in managing their supply chains. The main purpose of this study is twofold, 1) to explore the implications of applying analytics designing supply chain networks, 2) to investigate the link between operational and strategic management levels when making strategic decisions using analytics. Qualitative methods have been applied for this study to gain a greater understanding of the Supply Chain analytics phenomenon. An inductive approach in form of interviews, was performed in order to gain new empirical data. Fifteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with professional individuals who hold managerial roles such as project managers, consultants, and end-users within the fields of Supply Chain Management and Big Data analytics. The received empirical information was later analyzed using the thematic analysis method. The main findings in this thesis relatively contradicts with previous studies and existing literature in terms of connotations, definitions and applications of the three main types of analytics. Furthermore, the findings present new approaches and perspectives that advanced analytics apply on both strategic and operational management levels that are shaping supply chain network designs.

A structural equation modeling framework for studying sustainable freight transportation indicators in emerging economies

The movement of commodities in emerging economies is largely facilitated by freight transit. The major obstacle to developing sustainable freight transportation systems in emerging economies are multiple dynamic uncertainties and inherent sustainability risks. This study determines the major indicators responsible for the sustainability of freight transportation. Initially, 16 Sustainable Transportation Indicators (STIs) are identified through literature and discussed with experts under five sustainability parameters: reputation, overall service quality, resilience, economic model, and job satisfaction. The identified STIs are categorized under the economic, social, environmental, and risk categories. Later, a hypothetical conceptual Structural Equation Model (SEM) is employed to analyze and verify the data. The results from the study show that STIs such as Reputation, Employment Benefits, and Infrastructure and Technology are crucial for the development of sustainable freight transport in emerging economies as they can enhance the efficiency and productivity of transportation systems and, hence their importance must be considered for future deployment of freight transportation in these economies.

About two third of the Indian population continues to live in villages and depends on agriculture as main source of livelihood. The agrarian distress that took decades to build up, surfaced in the form of decline in the proportion of rural population and increase in the number of farmer's suicide cases. There is a strong hypothesis that in addition to production techniques, the widespread availability of Market Intelligence would bring substantial improvement in financial condition of farmers. Hence there is a need for comprehensive system, which would fetch, interlink, transform and analyze relevant data from various ministries/departments/organizations spread across the country to generate precise, appropriate and timely Market Intelligence. We took a step in this direction by design and implementation of Market Intelligence System Proof of Concept (PoC) using available datasets for few agricultural commodities. This PoC takes daily market price and weather data as input, transforms it into information and generates actionable intelligence by applying forecasting and deep learning techniques. The system provides trend analysis, short term as well as long term commodity price prediction and market selection as insights for farmers. The Auto Regressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA) forecasting technique and Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) deep learning techniques are applied for short term and long term agricultural commodity price prediction respectively. The study results demonstrate intended utility of forecasting and deep learning techniques for generating Market Intelligence System. The paper concludes with benefits of comprehensive Market Intelligence system, challenges and future work.

This part of the review aims to reduce the start-up burden of data collection and descriptive analytics for statistical modeling and route optimization of risk associated with motor vehicles. From a data-driven bibliometric analysis, we show that the literature is divided into two disparate research streams: (a) predictive or explanatory models that attempt to understand and quantify crash risk based on different driving conditions, and (b) optimization techniques that focus on minimizing crash risk through route/path-selection and rest-break scheduling. Translation of research outcomes between these two streams is limited. To overcome this issue, we present publicly available high-quality data sources (different study designs, outcome variables, and predictor variables) and descriptive analytic techniques (data summarization, visualization, and dimension reduction) that can be used to achieve safer-routing and provide code to facilitate data collection/exploration by practitioners/researchers. Then, we review the statistical and machine learning models used for crash risk modeling. We show that (near) real-time crash risk is rarely considered, which might explain why the optimization models (reviewed in Part 2) have not capitalized on the research outcomes from the first stream.

This research analyzes current levels of job satisfaction and desires to leave employment in law enforcement to determine the relationship between satisfaction and intentions to quit. Current law enforcement officers in the United States responded to survey statements regarding satisfaction and intentions to leave their current agencies related to seven areas pay, opportunities, co-workers, immediate supervisors, work conditions, work and family conflict, and public perception on a five-point Likert scale. In the 930 responses, respondents indicated overall satisfaction with their work and the intention to stay with their agencies. The most satisfied officers work for the county, are in agencies with 100-500 officers, or have 1-5 years of experience. Officers who work for a county or in agencies with 100-500 officers have reported being the least likely to leave their agencies. These results contradict previous research that claims officers in agencies with 100-500 officers were the least satisfied. These results also differ from previous research that indicates immediate supervisors play a significant role in job satisfaction and by finding that while significant differences did not exist in job satisfaction for gender overall, significant differences did exist for specific facets of satisfaction and intentions to quit. This research study contributes to the current knowledge on job satisfaction by supporting a correlation between job satisfaction and intentions to quit.
