INTRODUCTION: Anchorage is vital in both controlling tooth movement and understanding pressure distribution from force application. Relative anchorage value (RAV), as defined by the authors, is the root surface area (SA) below crestal bone. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to use CBCTs to determine RAVs of teeth by measuring and comparing the root SA of anterior to posterior teeth. These values will be compared to the modified Freeman study cited by Dr. Proffit in Contemporary Orthodontics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study reviewed images captured on 3D Accuitomo 170 (Irvine, CA), ranging from small FOV (40x40mm) to large FOV (170x120mm). Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) files meeting the inclusion criteria were transported into Materialise Mimics (Leuven, Belgium) to outline and isolate root structure from alveolar bone. Stereolithography (STL) files from Mimics was then imported into Geomagic Freeform Plus (Rock Hill, SC) to analyze root surface area below crestal bone. RAVs of posterior teeth were compared to anterior teeth for a first premolar extraction scenario. In addition, a ratio was calculated to allow for comparison of RAVs from this study to anchorage values from the modified Freeman study.

Background: Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) has become one of the most common procedures utilized to augment a deficient edentulous site in preparation for dental implant placement. Success of implant placement depends on the volume of bone and ridge dimensions at the surgical site. Numerous biomaterials and membranes have been successfully used to augment deficient ridges. The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate possible associations between subject- and procedure-related variables and increased horizontal ridge dimension following GBR procedures specifically utilizing high density polytetrafluoroethylene (dPTFE) membranes and freeze-dried bone allograft (FDBA). Methods: Pre- and Post-GBR cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images acquired between July 1, 2012 and November 7, 2016 were included in this analysis. Cone-beam computed tomography images, from two different timepoints, were overlaid and analyzed to measure the amount of ridge augmentation that was achieved. Gains in horizontal ridge dimension and change in vertical height of the crest were assessed with respect to subject- and procedure-related variables: gender, age, smoking status, number of missing teeth in site, anterior versus posterior site, healing time, titanium reinforcement of membrane, membrane fixation, tenting screw use, and membrane removal prior to implant placement.

Adequate working length (WL) and minimal enlargement of the apical foramen are important for successful endodontic outcomes 1,2. Even though procedural errors, such as unintentional enlargement of the apical foramen, are not the direct cause of treatment failure, they can potentially cause a treatment failure or diminished long-term prognosis. It has been suggested that enlargement of the canal to 3 sizes larger than the first apically binding file is sufficient and additional enlargement of the canal will not cause any further benefits 3. Additionally, some even suggest that no apical enlargement is necessary in order to achieve proper disinfection of the root canal system 4. Introduction of rotary nickel-titanium (NiTi) files and their constant improvement had allowed to minimize procedural iatrogenic errors and better control over cleaning and shaping procedures. Advancements in metallurgy allowed for introduction of multiple new instrumentation systems and single files that claim to perform fast, accurate and adequate cleaning and shaping of the root canal systems without excessive enlargement of the apical foramen 5,6. Brasseler XP-3D Shaper is a new rotary file with adaptive core design that allows it to conform to canal morphology ranging from size no. 30 to no. 90 at a .02 to .08 taper. The instrument is designed so when it rotates, its orbit expands and contracts to equally abrade the broad and narrow aspects of the canal as it continually adapts to the canals anatomy 7. Research indicates that when using the XP-3D Shaper, the final taper of the canal will indeed vary according to the original size and shape of the root canal system 8,9. In addition, XP-3D shaper was evaluated when used at the foramen and was found to enlarge but not deform the apical foramen 10.

Alcohol use is prevalent among military personnel, with many engaging in binge drinking behaviors. Military trainees are unique in that they experience an enforced alcohol ban for eight weeks while in Basic Military Training (BMT). However, they are also typically young adults, who consume alcohol at higher rates than any other age group. The current study aimed to describe alcohol consumption among trainees, determine when, where, and with whom Airmen drank for the first time during Technical Training, and if these patterns were significantly different based on descriptive norms (i.e., beliefs about how many other individuals engage in a certain behavior) related to alcohol use given that most military members consume alcohol. Lastly, we aimed to determine if alcohol consumption or potential alcohol use disorders (AUDs) were significantly different based on descriptive norms. Materials and Methods. Airmen (N = 599) were recruited at Joint Base San Antonio Fort Sam Houston during their last week of Technical Training to complete a survey. Study procedures were approved by the 59th Medical Wing Institutional Review Board. Participants were asked about their beliefs related to how many other Airmen drink alcohol (i.e., less than 50 percent, 50 percent or greater), their own experiences with alcohol (e.g., how much they drink compared to consumption before military service, blackouts after drinking during Technical Training), and when, where, and with whom they consumed alcohol for the first time after beginning military training. Results. Over half of Airmen reported not engaging in drinking behaviors during Technical Training. Among those who reported drinking one or more drinks during Technical Training, most reported drinking the same amount or less than they did prior to BMT. Majority of Airmen reported that they had maybe experienced blackouts from drinking since Technical Training.

Objective: The purpose of this randomized, double-blind, prospective clinical study was to determine if therapeutic auricular acupuncture based on the Battlefield Acupuncture protocol would reduce postoperative pain and use of pain medications following third-molar extractions compared to placebo auricular acupuncture. Methods: Twenty active-duty military members or DoD beneficiaries that required extraction of three or more third molars under IV sedation participated in the study. Following the extractions, the subjects were randomized to receive either placebo auricular acupuncture (n=12) with two gold-plated auricular semi-permanent needles in therapeutically neutral points (bilaterally) or therapeutic auricular acupuncture (n=8) using five gold-plated auricular semi-permanent needles (bilaterally) in the therapeutic points established by the Battlefield Acupuncture protocol. All needle placement was completed by an acupuncture-credentialed dentist. The subjects recorded VAS pain scores and the amount and type of pain medication used daily in a journal over a two-week period. Data were analyzed with a two-way repeated-measures ANOVA (alpha=0.05).

Bioceramic materials have demonstrated biologic and physical properties favorable for regenerative treatment. A key contributor to treatment success is an adequate restoration to prevent microleakage; however, research is limited regarding the bond strength between bioceramic materials used in regenerative procedures and restorative materials. Objective: The purpose of this study was to compare the bond strength between four bioceramic materials and a dual cure composite resin. Methods: Eighty wells in Teflon blocks were divided evenly into 4 groups and filled with a bioceramic material: Group 1: White ProRoot MTA; Group 2: Biodentine; Group 3: EndoSequence RRM Fast Set Putty; Group 4: NeoMTA. After allowing the materials to set according to manufacturers instructions, the exposed surfaces of the bioceramic materials were prepared using ClearFil SE Bond followed by restoration with ClearFil DC Core Plus. To test shear bond strength, each block was secured in a universal testing machine and the crosshead was advanced at 0.5mm/min until fracture. Newton peak force was recorded and MPa calculated. Data was analyzed by Independent Kruskal-Wallis Test and Dunns Post Hoc Test (p<0.05). Results: Mean shear bond strengths between ClearFil DC Core Plus and the bioceramic material groups were: White ProRoot MTA 7.96 MPa; Biodentine 9.18 MPa; EndoSequence RRM Fast Set Putty 4.47 MPa; NeoMTA 5.72 MPa. White ProRoot MTA and Biodentine were statistically similar, with higher stress bond strength than NeoMTA which had a statistically greater bond strength than Endo Sequence Root Repair Material. However, these differences are clinically insignificant. Conclusion: The choice of which bioceramic material to use in regenerative procedures should be based on factors other than the bond between that material and the overlying coronal resin restoration.

The U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences (ARI) is longitudinally examining the career progression of both commissioned officers and enlisted Soldiers. Utilizing a cohort-based approach, surveys will be administered yearly to each new cohort and cohorts from preceding years. This report summarizes the research tasks executed to date, which included (a) initial data description and processing, (b) item- and scale-level analyses, and (b) refinement of the Cohort survey. Results from year one indicated that most items and scales demonstrated favorable statistical and psychometric properties that set the foundation for future analytic work in this project. Several measures were identified and described that may be useful to examine over time in future iterations of the Cohort survey. Notably, low follow-up response rates were observed within cohorts across years, which presents challenges regarding our ability to address longitudinal research questions in subsequent reports. The report concludes with a summary of the research tasks conducted thus far, as well as a discussion of the next steps and goals of the project moving forward.

This report covers research conducted in 2019-2020 for the U.S. Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences that extends an ongoing program of research initiated in 2007. The initial goal of this research program was to develop a new non-cognitive measure, the Cadet Background and Experience Form (CBEF), to help inform the award of ROTC four-year scholarships. The operational CBEF continues to be valid for this purpose. This report describes the administration and analysis of CBEF data collected from four-year scholarship applicants and cadets at the ROTC Advanced Camp. The evidence in these samples suggests that the CBEF is predictive of key outcomes, including Army Physical Fitness Test (APFT), Grade Point Average (GPA), Outcome Metrics Score (OMS), and disenrollment, in both samples. These results are consistent with the findings of previous large-scale longitudinal validation analyses and are discussed in context of the current samples and previous research efforts.
