In the framework of phase-shifting interferometry, the characteristic polynomial theory is extended to deal with nonlinear and nonuniform phase-shift miscalibration. A general procedure for designing algorithms that are insensitive to those errors is presented. It is also shown how analytical expressions for the residual phase errors-can be obtained. Finally, it is demonstrated that the coefficients of any algorithm can be given a Hermitian symmetry. (C) 1998 Optical Society of America.

An Extended Analytical algorithm for Optimal designing of a TORUS-type Non-slotted Axial-Flux Permanent Magnet Motor

This paper presents an analytical algorithm for optimal designing of double-sided TORUS-type non-slotted axial-flux permanent magnet motors with surface mounted magnets. For this purpose, the machine design process is treated here as a procedure that receives the machine rated parameters and design constraints and yields the optimal values of various design parameters. The design optimization problem is established here on categorizing the design parameters into several groups. The decision variables are specified as selective parameters. The constraints are imposed through the developed equations for sizing and performance prediction of the machine, yielding the calculable parameters analytically and independently from finite element analysis (FEA). The objectives are the machine efficiency and power density, which are finally maximized based on PSO algorithm. The design algorithm was implemented in MATLAB, and the solution was then employed for validation through simulating by FEA and fabricating an experimental prototype. The fabricated machine has a compact size and appropriate performances under various loading conditions. The program solution is also compatible with the results of FEA and experiment on the fabricated prototype. These all demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed machine design algorithm.

An investigation is conducted of the relationship between a rectangular mesh and a square one. Asymptotically optimal algorithms are given for simulating one type by the other. The simulation results are useful since they permit designing algorithms on one network (e.g. the square mesh) in spite of the fact that the actual machine on which these algorithms will run is different (e.g. a rectangular mesh)

A design algorithm is introduced to synthesise a discrete time LQG optimal controller subject to design constraints requiring (i) complete and arbitrary stable poles placement, (ii) some zeros assignment, and (iii) input-output decoupling. The zeros placement is partially used to deal with the deterministic reference tracking and disturbances rejection problems. In the paper, the Wiener-Hopf technique is employed and two weighting matrices are shaped by the inverse optimal control method, so that the controller is optimal with respect to the chosen weighting matrices and achieves the above three goals simultaneously.

This paper demonstrates the specifics of the implementation of a control optimization procedure for the path and observations of a mobile observer detecting a system of sources with discretetime variable radiation intensities. We define the sequence of the calculation of the probabilistic characteristics of the radiation intensity variations in the control design algorithm. An illustrative example is given.

Secure function evaluation (SFE) is an area of cryptography concerned with the design of algorithms that allow mutually distrustful partners to evaluate desired functions on their inputs, while maximally preserving input privacy. With faster computers and networks, and continuous algorithm improvements, SFE has become within reach of practicality. The first large-scale industrial application of SFE-the result of over 20 years of relevant research-has been successfully completed in Denmark, where SFE was used to run a country-wide secure sugar beets auction. In this paper, we will provide a brief overview of SFE, the problem it solves, and its uses. We will describe several recent research advancements and argue that SFE is "the next big thing." Progress in a number of areas of technology has made printed circuit motors a serious contender for many applications. Modern cost effective neodymium magnets have allowed compact motor designs. Multi-layer circuit board production techniques have made the production of printed circuit coils cheaper and easier. However, in spite of the growing importance of printed circuit brushless motors, there is a lack of analytical tools to assist with their design. Geometrical analysis has been used to allow the plotting of printed circuit tracks to be carried out more systematically. The track plotting procedures have been linked with the finite element method to predict rotational electromotive force (EMF) waveforms. Six prototype motors were built and they were used to experimentally validate the method of predicting EMF waveforms. A general design algorithm is presented based on the suggested track plotting procedure and the EMF prediction technique.

Reduced and conventional size multi-band circular patch antennas loaded with metamaterials

In this study, a novel technique to achieve multi-band performance for both reduced and conventional size circular microstrip patch antennas loaded with metamaterial has been proposed. Incorporation of symmetric slotting concept with the concept of additional mode modification for both MNG (epsilon negative) and ENG (. negative) metamaterial loaded circular patch antennas have been shown. The use of metamaterial creates an unconventional mode, whereas symmetrical slotting not only modifies another band but also improves the gain by around 1 dB of unconventional mode for MNG loaded antenna. design algorithms for metamaterial loaded circular patch antennas have been developed to achieve size reduction and highly directive multiband property. Based on these design algorithms, at first a reduced size triple band circular patch antenna loaded with MNG metamaterial has been shown where around 35% size reduction is achievable. Later, a triple band conventional size circular patch antenna partially loaded with ENG metamaterial has been designed with high gain and directive performances for all three bands compared to previously reported such antennas.

Long-period-fiber-grating-based filter configuration enabling arbitrary linear filtering characteristics

The filtering scheme proposed here is based on transmission through a dual long-period-fiber-grating (LPFG) configuration and enables implementation of arbitrary spectral transfer functions using available inverse-scattering design algorithms, such as those widely used for fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) operating in reflection. Besides the important technical advantage of operation in transmission, the proposed device can reach large spectral bandwidths that would be extremely challenging to reach by, e.g., FBG devices. The proposed concept is demonstrated by designing and fabricating a LPFG-based filter for synthesis of transform-limited 1.5-ps-long square-like pulses. (C) 2009 Optical Society of America

Fast bandwidth-constrained shortest path routing algorithm

QoS routing has been a critical issue for providing QoS in high-speed networks. The authors present the design of a fast routing algorithm for selecting the shortest path connecting a pair of nodes subject to a bandwidth constraint. The algorithm works by combining the strategies of informed search and backwards routing. Its worst-case computational complexity is deduced to be O(\E\lg\V\), where \E\ and \V\ represent the number of links and nodes in the network, respectively. Simulation results indicate, however, that the designed algorithm can greatly reduce the average-case running time in computing such constrained shortest paths as compared with existing work.
