The paper presents an algorithm for the design of a single functional observer for a linear time-varying system. The proposed constructive procedure can be iterated to obtain a minimal order for the observer where the existence conditions are fufilled. As a specific feature, this procedure does not require the solution of any differential Sylvester equation.

This paper introduces the performance of a power leveling system with a 3.0-MJ, 3315-r/min flywheel energy storage. In terms of cost reduction, this system uses low cost ball bearings and general purpose induction motor. Therefore, such a system configurations occurs large loss during standby mode. In order to overcome this problem, low loss design algorithm that focuses on the mechanical loss is applied to the design of the flywheel. As a result, the flywheel loss in the steady state consists of bearing loss of 28.3%, the copper loss of 22.5% for the induction motor. Moreover, charging and discharging efficiency are measured to evaluate the prototype flywheel system. From the analysis, it is confirmed that the charging efficiency is 75.4% and the discharging efficiency is 77.2%.

We present a least squares based allpass filter design with a prescribed maximum pole magnitude constraint suitable for photonic systems. The constraint comes from the physical limitations of realizing digital filters using photonic components, and must be addressed in the designing phase. We develop our design algorithm following the eigenfilter approach for allpass filters. The constraint is formulated using the Argument Principle and modified to match the eigenfilter objective function. An iterative approach is then employed to obtain the filter coefficients that best satisfy both the objective function and the constraint. Our algorithm will be ideal for yielding allpass filters suitable for narrowband designs that are common to the optical domain. Examples relevant to filtering in the optical frequency range are subsequently demonstrated. Physical origins of the pole magnitude constraints are also briefly explained.

As communication security has become a critical problem in current wireless networks, physical layer security has attracted more and more research interest However, due to the large number of receiving users, traditional physical layer security techniques, e.g., artificial-noise-aided transmit beamforming, do not apply well to multicast transmission. To cope with this problem, an enhanced secure multicast scheme is proposed in this paper, in which multicast users with close channel vectors are divided into a cluster and different clusters are served on different channels. Based on this scheme, a heuristic user clustering algorithm and a joint power allocation and beamforming design algorithm are presented to maximize the globally achievable secure multicast rate. Simulation results show that the enhanced scheme can support a much higher secure transmission rate than traditional secure multicast schemes, and the proposed joint power allocation and beamforming design algorithm outperforms existing exhaustive searching methods greatly in terms of computation complexity.

Optimising oligonucleotide array design for ChIP-on-chip

The sequencing of whole genomes has allowed for custom- made genome-wide microarray assays such as the ChIP-on-chip. With this technology we can detect e.g. transcription factor binding sites over an entire genome. In principle, an accurate detection is only limited by the resolution of the chipdesign, i.e. the tiling density of the oligonucleotides. However, the inherent noise of the DNA hybridisation severely hampers the interpretation of the results. We mined existing ChIP-on-chip datasets to identify the main sources of noise arising from the sequence selection. We found that limiting intervals must be imposed on 1)the melting temperature, 2)the lengths of the probes, 3)palindromic sequences and 4)the sequence uniqueness relative to the rest of the genome. Based on this knowledge we developed an oligonucleotide array design algorithm to generate a genome-wide array design for any given genome at a given tiling density. To obtain unique sequences we invented a novel approach for selecting the sequences. Using an augmented suffix-array implementation we score sequences by their content of sequence-unique subsequences and select preferentially the sequences with the highest content of unique subsequences. We have tested our design algorithm using different parameter settings in a fractional factorial test setup, in effect testing eight different parameter combinations. The tests were designed for the mouse genome on the 2.18 M feature array from Nimblegen and performed under true ChIP-on-chip experimental conditions using mouse TBP ChIP samples for the hybridisations. Test hybridisations were performed for three biological replicas, each hybridised three times, to estimate the variance across both biological and technical replicas. From the tested designs we deduce the effect of each parameter on the resulting signal and coverage of the design. One of the most important subsystems in the air-breathing engines is the atomizers, which break the fuel into many droplets. It is well known that atomization quality has a significant influence on combustion characteristics such as stability limits, efficiency, and pollutant emission. Both jet and swirl injectors are applicable in gas turbine engines. The latter have been widely used for combustion chambers and the former are usually employed for fuel injection in the afterburner part. Since experimental and numerical study of atomizers could be complex and costly, a design methodology of atomizers based on empirical relations is still very advantageous and effective in reducing experimental efforts. We describe the design algorithm for both jet and swirl injectors, for which it is inevitable to use empirical relations. Detailes of the design algorithm are presented to determine the injector dimensions. The final dimensions are also a function of fuel properties and surrounding conditions. For instance, in liquid jet injectors, the type of the inlet and its length to diameter ratio are very important in term of instability aspects. Therefore, the effect of five type of inlets are considered and compared. Loss effects are also taken into account in this study, including loss of energy related to vortices generated due to fluid contraction, loss of energy related to vortices generated due to expansion after contraction and loss of energy due to friction. Using the methodology of design presented here for both types of injectors, the influence of different parameters on atomizer dimensions as well as spray characteristics of both types are finally compared and discussed.

Cooperative manipulation, where several robots collaboratively transport an object, poses a great challenge in robotics. In order to avoid object deformations in cooperative manipulation, formation rigidity of the robots is desired. This work proposes a novel linear state feedback controller that combines both optimal goal regulation and a relaxed form of the formation rigidity constraint, exploiting an underlying distributed impedance control scheme. Since the presented control design problem is in a biquadratic LQR-like form, we present an iterative design algorithm to compute the controller. As an intermediate result, an approximated state-space model of an interconnected robot system is derived. The controller design approach is evaluated in a full-scale multi-robot experiment.

We study a class of composite digital filters, each has a dominating FIR component of order N and an extremely simple IIR component of order r with r << N that are connected in parallel. We show that a constrained optimization setting known as convex-concave procedure (CCP) is naturally suited for the design of stable composite filters where the FIR and IIR components are jointly optimized in frequency-weighted minimax sense. A design algorithm based on successive CCP is presented and numerical examples are included to demonstrate that even with r = 2 composite filters offer substantial performance improvement relative to their FIR-alone counterparts.

This paper gives new results on the design of iterative learning control algorithms in the repetitive process setting for error convergence and regulation of the transient dynamics. The analysis makes use of the generalized Kalman-Yakubovich-Popov lemma to develop a design algorithm different performance specifications are imposed in one or more frequency ranges. Also these new results allow, if required for an application, the design of controllers with dynamics.
