Identifying "important" time frames and sub-regions from massive scientific data set stream and directing scientists to pay attention to segments of interest in the data is an important research area. We introduced a general approach for change detection which based on statistical technology and designed algorithms to reveal important time-frames and subregions from scientific data set stream. Experiment Results obtained with synthetic data and plasma simulation data are presented. Our work can remarkably improve the way in which scientists extract useful information from large, complex, scientific data.

This paper presents an interaction control algorithm for a dielectric elastomer (DE) membrane actuator. The proposed method permits to efficiently exploit the controllable stiffness of the material, and use it as a "programmable spring", thus enhancing its use in applications such as robotic manipulation or haptic devices. To achieve this goal, a design algorithm based on linear matrix inequalities is proposed, which grounds on a framework developed in the authors' previous works. The resulting controller is a low-gain partial state feedback law that controls the elastomer stiffness, while providing robust stability and performance with respect to model nonlinearities. The approach is validated on an experimental prototype consisting of a DE membrane pre-loaded with a bi-stable biasing spring.

This paper proposes a decentralised controller design for doubly-fed induction generators (DFIGs) to enhance dynamic performance of distribution networks. The change in the output power due to the variable nature of wind is considered as an uncertain term in the design algorithm. In addition, the interconnection effects of other subsystems are considered in the design process. The H_∞ norm of the uncertain system is found out and simultaneous output-feedback linear controllers are designed based on this norm-bound. The performance of the designed controller is verified on a 16 bus distribution test system for severe disturbances. Simulation results indicate that the designed controller is robust against uncertainties in operating conditions.

Recent developments in the field of gene sequencing technology greatly accelerated discovery of mutations that cause various genetic disorders. At the same time, a typical sequencing experiment generates a large number of candidate mutations, hence detecting single or few causative variants is still a formidable problem. Many computational methods have been proposed to assist this process, from which a large portion employ statistical learning in some form. Consequently, each newly designed algorithm is routinely compared to other competing systems in hope to demonstrate advantageous performance. In this work we review and discuss several issues related to the current practice of evaluation of mutation prioritization algorithms and suggest possible directions for improvements.

Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) has been widely used in the robotics to model uncertainties from sensors, actuators and the environment. However, such comprehensiveness makes the planning in POMDP generally very difficult. Existing work often searches for an optimal control policy with respect to predefined reward functions, which may require a large memory and is computationally expensive. We propose to use formal methods and learn a Deterministic Finite Automaton (DFA) as a supervisor to regulate the behavior of a Partially Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP), such that it satisfies the given specification in Probabilistic Computation Tree Logic (PCTL). For such a purpose, we modify the L~* learning algorithm and define oracles for membership queries and conjectures. We further show that the termination and correctness of the design algorithm are guaranteed. A simple example is used for illustration.

A repetitive process makes a series of sweeps or passes through dynamics defined on a finite duration termed the pass length. The process output is termed the pass profile and when each pass is completed, resetting to the starting location ready for the start of the next one. On any pass the previous pass profile acts as a forcing function on, and hence contributes to, the dynamics of the next one. There has been a considerable volume of profitable work on the development of a control theory for these processes with more recent focus on the design of control laws. The novel contribution of this paper is a new design algorithm which makes more use of available previous pass profile information and reduces the conservativeness present in existing alternatives.

Control schemes that learn using measurement data collected online are increasingly promising for the control of complex and uncertain systems. However, in most approaches of this kind, learning is viewed as a side effect that passively improves control performance, e.g., by updating a model of the system dynamics. Determining how improvements in control performance due to learning can be actively exploited in the control synthesis is still an open research question. In this paper, we present AntLer, a design algorithm for learning-based control laws that anticipates learning, i.e., that takes the impact of future learning in uncertain dynamic settings explicitly into account. AntLer expresses system uncertainty using a non-parametric probabilistic model. Given a cost function that measures control performance, AntLer chooses the control parameters such that the expected cost of the closed-loop system is minimized approximately. We show that AntLer approximates an optimal solution arbitrarily accurately with probability one. Furthermore, we apply AntLer to a nonlinear system, which yields better results compared to the case where learning is not anticipated.

In several systems, the physical parameters of the system vary over time or operating points. A popular way of representing such plants with structured or parametric uncertainties is by means of interval polynomials. However, ensuring the stability of such systems is a robust control problem. Fortunately, Kharitonov's theorem enables the analysis of such interval plants and also provides tools for design of robust controllers in such cases. The present paper considers one such case, where the interval plant is connected with a time-invariant, static, odd, sector type nonlinearity in its feedback path. This paper provides necessary conditions for the existence of self sustaining periodic oscillations in such interval plants, and indicates a possible design algorithm to avoid such periodic solutions or limit cycles. The describing function technique is used to approximate the nonlinearity and subsequently arrive at the results. Furthermore, the value set approach, along with Mikhailov conditions, are resorted to in providing graphical techniques for the derivation of the conditions and subsequent design algorithm of the controller.

In order to fulfill the grid codes and meet power quality requirements in grid connected converters without increasing the switching frequency or system size, higher order line filters are used. This paper considers the active damping of LCL filters in grid connected converters. The proportional feedback of the last two samples of the filter capacitor current for the purpose of active damping is analyzed in the discrete time domain. A simple numerical design algorithm is proposed and an analytical solution is derived for a special case. The new algorithm allows the optimal active damping of the uncontrolled system or the closed loop system with a grid current or inverter current PI-controller. Finally the performance of the proposed methods is shown and compared through analysis in the z-domain and experimental investigation.

The analysis of patterns of social interaction plays an important role in providing services on online platforms (e.g., in designing algorithms for the allocation of information resources). The proposed model takes into account human factors underlying the concept of the Ideal Free Distribution (IFD), which captures empirical patterns of the aggregate group-level behavior of individuals competing for resources. The model explains the phenomenon of resource undermatching as a natural IFD-based outcome resulting from boundedly rational decision-making (i.e., individuals perceive only some of the available resources). We show that undermatching can be described as a globally balanced state in which the perceived cost of the best forgone alternatives is approximately the same for all individuals. Furthermore, we identify conditions that guarantee stability. From this analysis, we infer that the matching of the aggregate of individual choices to resources is independent of their initial distribution. Finally, we quantify the effect of resource scarcity on the degree of matching.
