A design pattern helps to improve the quality of a software system by providing a proven solution for recurring design problems. However, the abstract and informal nature of prevailing pattern descriptions makes it hard to use design patterns and hinders the development of tool support. In this paper, we present an approach that systematically applies a design pattern to a problem model and transforms it to a solution model with traceability, which helps to understand how a design pattern addresses its intended design problem. In the approach, a design pattern is defined as a pair of solution and problem specifications and a transformation specification. A problem model is checked for pattern applicability, and if applicable, the pattern is applied to the model using the pattern's transformation specification, which results in a solution model conforming to the solution specification of the pattern. This approach establishes an explicit traceability of how pattern properties are incorporated into a model. We demonstrate the approach using the Visitor pattern applied to two case studies. The influences of design patterns o n software quality have attracted increasing attention in the area of software engineering, as design patterns encapsulate valuable knowledge to resolve design problems, and more importantly to improve the design quality. Since most design patterns are designed to enhance the maintainability, a system with such design patterns is expected to have lower maintenance load in its further evolution. However, sometimes design patterns are over applied or mis-used in many systems, which will cause another maintenance problem or impair the system performance. Therefore, lots of researchers proposed their approaches to evaluate the quality of design patterns or their deployment. However, there is no approach taking the software evolution into concern, even it is the major issue a design pattern addresses. In this paper, we propose a new approach to formulate the evaluation of a design pattern's utilization using the evolution data. We also conduct our approach to 11 design patterns over 15 projects which provide software evolution data. The analysis results show that the utilization of deployed design patterns does not have significant difference among the design patterns in the evolution of software design.

design pattern is widely used in the software engineering field, which enables designers to reuse existing mature designs from a high level perspective. Inspired by this idea, a novel approach is proposed to extract design patterns in the CAD field. First, the characteristics for a good design pattern are analyzed and the model for representing design patterns is elaborated. Then, given a set of 3D feature-based CAD models, the corresponding extraction approach is proposed, which includes three important phases: (1) extracting reusable regions with high cohesion, low coupling and moderate complexity so as to form a relative integrated function;(2) constructing candidate design patterns by clustering reusable regions using a graph-oriented agglomerative hierarchical clustering algorithm;(3) determining the final design patterns by choosing those candidate design patterns with high frequency and sufficient information. Finally, a design pattern extraction prototype system is developed, and the experimental results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. A design pattern helps to improve the quality of a software system by providing a proven solution for recurring design problems. However, the abstract and informal nature of prevailing pattern descriptions makes it difficult to use design patterns. There have been significant works on formalizing design patterns which found a base for systematic application of a design pattern. pattern-based model transformation has emerged as an approach for incorporating pattern properties into a design model. However, the existing work mostly focuses on the solution domain of a pattern while leaving out the problem domain, structural pattern aspects with little attention to behavioral aspects, and general methodologies without concrete implementations. In this work, we present an approach for transforming an application model using both the structural and behavioral properties of a design pattern defined in terms of the problem and solution domain and its implementation using Query/View/Transformation (QVT). In the approach, we define pattern consistency for structural and behavioral pattern properties and pattern conformance for pattern applicability before transformation solution conformance after transformation. We demonstrate the approach using the Observer pattern applied to a graph application. Besides the Observer pattern, we also define transformation rules for the Visitor and Adapter patterns. In common design pattern collections,e.g.,design pattern books,design patterns are documented with templates that consist of multiple attributes,such as intent,structure,and sample *** adapt to modern developers,the depictions of design patterns,especially some specific attributes,should advance with the current programming technologies,for example,“known uses”,which exemplifies the use scenarios of design patterns in practice,and“related patterns”,which describes the relatedness between a design pattern and the others within a ***,it is not easy to update the contents of these attributes manually due to the diversity of the programming *** address this problem,in this work,we conducted a case study to mine design pattern use scenarios and related design pattern pairs from Stack Overflow posts to enrich the two *** first extracted the question posts relevant to each design pattern by identifying the design pattern ***,the topics of the posts were discovered by applying topic modeling ***,by analyzing the topics specified for each design pattern,we detected 195 design pattern use scenarios and 70 related design pattern pairs,involving 61 design patterns *** findings are associated with a variety of popular software frameworks and programming *** could complement the existing design pattern collections and help developers better acknowledge the usage and relatedness of design patterns in today's programming practice.

Secure patterns provide a solution for the security requirement of the software. There are large number of secure patterns, and it is quite difficult to choose an appropriate pattern. Moreover, selection of these patterns needs security knowledge;generally, developers are not specialized in the domain of security knowledge. This paper can help in the selection of secure pattern on the basis of tradeoffs of the secure pattern using text categorization. A repository of secure design patterns is used as a data set and a repository of requirements artifacts in the form of software requirements specification (SRS) are used for this paper. A text categorization scheme, which begins with preprocessing, indexing of secure patterns, ends up by querying SRS features for retrieving secure design pattern using document retrieval model. For the evaluation of the proposed model, we have used three different domains' SRS. These three SRS documents represent three different domains, i.e., e-commerce, social media, and desktop utility program. A traditional precision and recall method along with F-measure used for evaluation of information/document retrieval model is used to evaluate the results. F-measure for 17 different design problems shows around 81% accuracy with recall up to 0.69%.

Context Because of the evergrowing complexity of Real-Time Embedded Systems (RTES) coupled with the variety of scheduling approaches and algorithms, the scheduling step has become more challenging mainly for new designers. In particular, the choice of the appropriate scheduling algorithm for a RTES is a hard step that requires vast knowledge and expertise of the scheduling field. Therefore, there is still a need for directives and guidelines to assist designers while choosing the appropriate scheduling algorithm to avoid system failures. In this respect, some approaches were proposed to deal with automatic scheduling. However, only the partitioned scheduling approach which prevents task migration was supported. Objective: Our work aims at supporting the automatic choice of scheduling approach and algorithm at a highlevel of abstraction. A key feature of this proposal is that it supports semi-partitioned and global scheduling, which allow task migration. Method: With the above objective in mind, we propose a model-based approach which focuses on the use of the Model Driven Engineering (MDE) and design patterns to support the automatic scheduling at a high-level of abstraction. The proposed approach uses two design patterns previously published (Magdich et al., 2014, 2015) to model the semi-partitioned and global scheduling approaches. They allow checking the correctness of the studied system model and detecting automatically the appropriate scheduling approach and algorithm. A schedulability analysis step is, therefore, performed to check the temporal behavior of the studied system once the selected scheduling algorithm is applied. Results: The findings reveal the important impact of the use of high-level methodologies during the RTES scheduling. The automatic choice of the scheduling algorithm makes the scheduling step easier. Conclusions: Our proposal represents the first attempt to support the automatic scheduling regarding semi partitioned and global scheduling.

Blockchain is an innovative distributed ledger technology which has attracted a wide range of interests for building the next generation of applications to address lack-of-trust issues in business. Blockchain as a service (BaaS) is a promising solution to improve the productivity of blockchain application development. The existing BaaS solutions mostly focus on easier and faster deployment of blockchain applications. However, design of blockchain applications is challenging to developers as it requires development experiences and deep understanding of blockchain technologies. Therefore, this paper summarises a set of design patterns and delivers them as a service to support design of blockchain application. We present a service platform which applies design patterns for data management and smart contract design of blockchain applications to address the scalability and security issues of blockchain. The platform also provides two auxiliary services, including key management and file comparison, which are often needed in blockchain applications. The feasibility of the proposed solutions is evaluated using a real-world quality tracing use case.

Tremor patients are frequently facing problems when interacting with IT systems and services. They do not reach the same levels of input efficiency and easily become unhappy with a technology they do not perceive as a general asset. Cases of Intention tremor show a significant comparative rise in inaccurate movement towards a real button or virtual buttons on touch screens, as this particular tremor increases its symptoms when approaching a desired physical target. People suffering from this specific tremor have been identified as the target group. This group has been closely investigated and thus, a new input procedure has been developed which may be used on standard touch screens. The new technique enables users, accordingly tremor patients, to fully operate IT-based systems and therefore possess full control over input. Deviations caused by the tremor are compensated with a continuous movement instead of a single targeted move which remains the most difficult task to the user. Also, the screen surface will present a frictional resistance, which significantly hinders tremor symptoms. Input can be identified by the computer system with high accuracy, by means of special heuristics, which support barrier free access beyond the target group.
