The objective of this article is to present a comprehensive task analysis methodology that can provide guidelines for the design of dexterous robotic grippers. This methodology combines a human-centered gesture analysis and an object-centered grasp stability analysis. The former relies on a careful examination of a human operator's hands gestures while performing a specific process, providing designers with tools that help specifying the number of fingers, the number of degrees of freedom, and the placement of tactile sensors. The latter exploits a grasp quality metric to compute the efforts required to handle the involved objects, providing guidelines for the specification of the actuation system. This approach is exemplified by defining technical specifications for the design of a multi-fingered robotic gripper intended to perform the tasks involved in a sterility testing process.

The design of Shipboard Power Systems (SPSs) needs careful consideration of a variety of system specifications, operating constraints and design requirements under different operating scenarios and mission profiles to maintain a stable, reliable and economically efficient operation. Especially, for the state-of-the-art DC-based SPSs, with the extensive use of power electronic apparatus and the wide adoption of intelligent ship modernization techniques, the complexity and heterogeneity of on-board electrical systems significantly increase. Therefore, the corresponding specifications, regulations, and requirements that are tailored specifically for DC based SPSs need to be developed to address the requirements of electric ship design, simulation, control, optimization, management, and automation. Given the limited amount of existing published works in this field, this paper aims to bring together different aspects of model-based electric ship design. It provides a thorough survey of design specification and requirement criteria along with their mathematical formulations that are of different importance, physical natures and time scales to address the transient and steady-state studies for the latest Medium-Voltage DC (MVDC) SPSs. This paper can be considered an attempt to provide a comprehensive study for the SPS research community from academia, industry, and Navy to facilitate various aspects of design, development, and deployment of the MVDC SPS applications.

Experimental behaviour of circular concrete filled steel tube columns and design specifications

This paper presents 18 tests conducted on short, medium and long circular Concrete Filled Steel Tube (CFST) columns. To explore the impact of column parameters and confinement effect three L/D ratios, two D/t ratios, two steel qualities and three concrete classes were employed. Some specimens have properties within application limits of EC4 and AISC 360-10 whereas others have properties beyond the application limits. Since new, large and efficient structures require adoption of high strength materials, it is compulsory to push the limits of design specifications. It is shown that 56 MPa and 66 MPa concretes provide very smooth and ductile load-shortening curves which imply high deformation capacity of such concrete classes. Brittle nature of 107 MPa concrete is shown by very sharp transitions from pre-peak to post-peak region and sudden discharge of loading in load-shortening curves. Additionally, 239 experimental data were collected from literature to assess EC4 and AISC 360-10 predictions within application limits and beyond application limits. Instead of focusing on a narrow region of configurations, this paper examines the performance of prediction methods on short, medium and long CFST columns. EC4 predictions indicate much better agreement with the test results. However AISC 360-10 predictions are conservative for all combinations of parameters. The application limits of EC4 can be widened to cover solutions of columns with broader properties. Confinement effect should be handled elaborately in AISC 360-10 formulations. L/D and relative slenderness are key parameters and have direct impact on column behaviour. However D/t does not have direct impact on column behaviour. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

There are many more examples where commercial-scale specifications have been inappropriately applied to pilot plants beyond the four described in this article (I). specifications for commercial-scale operations often involve welded pipe and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) flanges, whereas tubing can be substituted in most instances at the pilot scale. Unique pilot-plant specifications reduce layout space and costs, and improve product quality.

In this paper, the problem of fractional-order proportional-integral-derivative (FOPID) controller tuning for fractional-order first-order plus dead time plants (FFOPDT) is considered. The designed controller must fulfill the prescribed specifications in the frequency domain. To this end, the fractional orders of the integrator and differentiator components are selected using a set of rules based on the observation of essential plant dynamics, while a numerical optimization algorithm is employed for obtaining the gains of the controller based on three dimensional Newton's method. All the necessary equations for computing the elements of the Jacobian matrix are provided. The proposed algorithm is detailed. It is also implemented and verified on an embedded device. The proposed solution may be useful in developing automatic tuning algorithms for FOPID controllers.

Bolted connections are one of the key connection configurations in steel structures. The ductile fracture prediction is one of the challenges in the structural integrity evaluating of steel structures. To guarantee the safety of steel bridge in connections, an accurate assessment of the ultimate resistance of high-strength bolts under combined tensile-shear loads is necessary. However, the impacts of various parameters on high-strength bolts under combined tensile-shear loads are not sufficiently analysed in the existing references. Hence, in this paper, the validated mesoscale critical equivalent plastic strain (MCEPS) method is used to evaluate the ultimate resistance of high-strength bolts with different bolt grades, bolt diameters, bolt types, hole clearance, and preload force when the bolts are exposed to combined tensile-shear loading. The simulation results are compared to existing design specifications. Finally, the formula modifications in the existing design standards are proposed based on statistical analysis on numerical parametric results.

Currently, there are hardly any uniform design specifications for the construction of ablution places at mosques in Saudi Arabia. designs of ablution places are usually copied from designs of ablution places in other mosques or based on individual perspectives. Based on the researchers' anecdotal observations, most of these designs are nonergonomic, uncomfortable, and less user-friendly for ablution in either sitting or standing position, especially for the elderly. In such designs, water splashing is common because of inappropriate heights of platforms or seats, insufficient distances between seats and faucets, and improper shapes and depths of water drain. The purpose of the present study is to present the design of a novel ergonomic ablution place to ensure comfortable, safe, and hygienic conditions. The design is particularly related to the size and height of seat, height and distance of faucet from the seat, depth and slope of water drain, and height and width of the platform. The design was implemented at four mosques in Arar, Saudi Arabia. Modifications at ablution places were made according to the proposed design and were appreciated by the local community. The design was communicated to the Directorate of Mosques in Arar and agreed upon for implementation in other mosques.

ECG signals are often contaminated with various types of noise and interference that can distort or obscure the underlying information that the signal contains. Examples of noise sources that can affect ECG signals include: 1) Electrical interference from other devices or power sources 2) Muscle activity or movement artifacts from the patient 3) Baseline wander caused by respiration or other body movements 4) High-frequency noise from electrical activity in the environment. To remove these sources of noise and interference, ECG signals are often filtered using a combination of analog and digital signal processing techniques. design of low Hz range low-pass filter for on-chip biomedical data acquisition systems is an area of continuous research. Some of the biggest hurdles when designing sub-Hz-Hz filters are maintaining a low transconductance gain (Gm), while at the same time maintaining a high tunability range and dynamic range. A single-ended Gm-C integrator is often the basis from which most conventional low pass Gm-C filter structures begin. The performance of single-ended Gm-C integrators can be enhanced by using different techniques. In this work we explore several techniques to reduce transconductance, such as current steering and use of switching transistor. In this paper we realized a comparable design using 45nm CMOS process on cadence virtuoso. Our realized design achieves a cutoff frequency of 120 Hz using a 1V single supply and 500nA bias current. Lastly, we test the performance of our filter by feeding ECG data.

Shear behaviour and theoretical model of large shear key dry joints in precast concrete segmental bridges using advanced monitoring

Keyed dry joints are commonly utilised in segmental bridges for shear stress transmission. The aim of this study is to explore the shear behaviour and capacity of large shear key dry joints. The considered parameters included key base height, key number and concrete strength. The key base heights were found to have a significant impact on the failure mode and shear carrying capacity. When the key base height is increased by 100%, the shear carrying capacity of the joint is increased by 156%. Digital image correlation (DIC) and distributed fibre optic sensing (DFOS) technologies revealed the characteristics of load transfer in the large shear key, validated the principle of inclined strut column and observed the changing angle of inclined column with the increase in shear key size. Moreover, due to the shear transfer at the large key teeth, there is a trend of separation in the lower contact surfaces of the joint. Based on these findings, an improved calculation method for the shear strength of large key dry joints was established. The calculation results show more accurate predictions for large key dry joints than available calculation methods developed for smaller keyed dry joints.
