This study introduces an automated method for constructing residential functional modules from the perspective of user behavior. By integrating the design structure matrix (DSM) and Fuzzy C-Means Clustering Algorithm (FCM), this approach systematically explores architectural functional modules. The DSM is employed to statistically analyze the correlations between residential behaviors. These correlations are then processed using FCM to generate various module segmentation schemes. The optimal scheme is selected based on modularity calculations. The results demonstrate improved modularity compared to traditional room-based designs, offering a greater variety of combinations and hierarchical organization. This methodology provides architects with a novel approach to address space integration challenges.

Companies dealing with industrial products, such as automobiles and laptops, should develop low-cost products with long-term high performance, low environmental load, and long lifespans to achieve a sustainable society. Thus, it is necessary to realize a product architecture in which the products can be easily upgraded and repaired by encouraging various suppliers to participate in the economic sphere of the products by promoting the standardization of components through an appropriate product modularization. In conventional module design, research focuses on reducing development lead time through the common use of components and on deriving appropriate product architecture by creating a design structure matrix based on the functionality of the product. Studies have also been conducted to derive an appropriate supply chain by considering the locations of the production and assembly sites of individual modules. However, few studies have been conducted on the consistent process from the derivation of product architecture candidates to the evaluation of their supply chains. Therefore, in this study, a design structure matrix, defined from multiple perspectives related to product functionality, is used to derive architecture candidates that consider the feasibility of products. Furthermore, we introduce the concept of supply chain management and propose a method that derives product architectures that consider sustainability and their supply chains by comprehensively evaluating product architecture candidates and their supply chains based on quality, cost, lead time, and environmental load. The proposed method is applied to a modularization problem of laptops, and a design structure matrix is created from five different perspectives: size effect, contact effect, power, information, and heat, and two product architecture candidates are derived. This article introduces a new mixed integer linear programming (MILP) approach to the modular architecture design problem based on the design structure matrix (DSM). The DSM modularization (clustering) problem aims to maximize the modularity (quantified by the Q-metric) under constraints reflecting practical design/manufacturing/maintenance considerations. A MILP formulation is developed to optimize a modular architecture under constraints. The developed formulation is verified through two case studies on the subsystems of an automobile and an electric train. Both case studies successfully demonstrate the proposed formulation's effectiveness, highlighting its practical applicability.

designing a complex system generally requires its decomposition into smaller modular constituents for the ease of design, integration, operation, and future upgrades. Typically, system decomposition analysis is conducted using an abstract system model during the initial system design stage. The design structure matrix (DSM) has been a popular tool for abstract system modeling. In the DSM, systems are modeled and decomposed into modular configurations using published clustering algorithms. In this paper, we present a novel approach for system architecture decomposition and modularization based on the DSM, which can incorporate multiple design constraints into clustering algorithms. Two clustering algorithms are modified to accommodate the system design constraints. The modified algorithms are used to decompose a static inverter (SIV) of an electrical train into modular configurations that include various design constraints. Finally, the results and analysis of the SIV modularization using new modified clustering algorithms are presented.

A void exists in development of design theory methodology within the structural engineering community. This void hampers efforts to resolve performance deficiencies including cost over-runs, unplanned rework, and suboptimal design. In manufacturing, product design and production improvements have resulted from implementation of the design structure matrix (DSM) methodology. DSM offers a means to represent, analyze, and decompose complex systems in order to improve their performance. DSM use within the architecture engineering construction (AEC) industry has been sporadic and focused primarily in the U.K. Where applied, DSM has proven effective at helping AEC design teams streamline processes to address nonlinearity (nonsequential information flows) introduced by iteration and complexity in design. When a DSM reveals iteration and highly dependent work, group brainstorming, collocated design sessions, rapid feedback, set-based design, and collaborative design aids can be used to increase overall team effectiveness. This paper examines a case study where DSM-based planning software was used on a seismic retrofit project to drive process improvement in design management. DSM correctly identified iterative activities central to design and provided the following;(1) a common vocabulary to discuss rework in the context of a multidisciplinary design team;(2) a rational method to schedule team collocation and brainstorming efforts to maximize their benefit;and (3) a means to consider iterative activities (and associated hand-offs) in design work structuring.

The perpetual energy production of a wind farm could be accomplished (under proper weather conditions) if no failures occurred. But even the best possible design, manufacturing, and maintenance of a system cannot eliminate the failure possibility. In order to understand and minimize the system failures, the most crucial components of the wind turbines, which are prone to failures, should be identified. Moreover, it is essential to determine and classify the criticality of the system failures according to the impact of these failure events on wind turbine safety. The present study is processing the failure data from a wind farm and uses the Fault Tree Analysis as a baseline for applying the design structure matrix technique to reveal the failure and risk interactions between wind turbine subsystems. Based on the analysis performed and by introducing new importance measures, the "readiness to fail" of a subsystem in conjunction with the "failure riskiness" can determine the "failure criticality." The value of the failure criticality can define the frame within which interventions could be done. The arising interventions could be applied either to the whole system or could be focused in specified pairs of wind turbine subsystems. In conclusion, the method analyzed in the present research can be effectively applied by the wind turbine manufacturers and the wind farm operators as an operation framework, which can lead to a limited (as possible) design-out maintenance cost, failures' minimization, and safety maximization for the whole wind turbine system.

Systems engineering is suitably applied to space programming due to the multidisciplinary and complex nature of space missions where systematic design methods are commonly utilized. For designing a spacecraft, knowledge and expertise from different disciplines are required and numerous projects and subprojects need to work simultaneously and in close coordination. The purpose of this article is to analyze the system design process for a CubeSat using a design structure matrix. Considering the characteristics of the design structure matrix method is a powerful design tool that assists in managing the complexity of system design with many parameters. The design structure matrix method offers advantages to address these deficiencies in the design process of a satellite because it considers multiple factors that exist in the design process. The design structure matrix method helps reduce repetitions in the process. This method has been used to show the interdependent relationships between the different components of CubeSat and present the design process at the system level. In this study, 4 main components and their effect on each other have been demonstrated. The process was identified in the form of a matrix. This study aimed to capture the issues, activities, challenges, and opportunities for improving the conception, design, manufacture, testing, launch and operation of small satellite missions and identify lessons learned for process improvements of future missions.

Product decomposition using design structure matrix for intellectual property protection in supply chain outsourcing

In global recession, outsourcing becomes a question of survival for most executives who need to restore profitability and growth. One of the critical challenges faced by such decisions is the potential risk of leaking confidential information through shared suppliers and partners. In this paper, a new approach is proposed to decompose a product into several sub-components for mitigating the risk of Intellectual Property (IP) leakage caused by inferences in supply chains. A design structure matrix is employed to study the potential risk of IP leakage considering different types of interactions between product components. Based on such a matrix, a clustering algorithm is developed to decompose and allocate the product components regarding IP protection issue. This methodology can be considered as a decision support tool to help the manufacturer select a set of optimal suppliers while minimizing the information leakage risk and the manufacturing cost. Understanding design change propagation in complex engineering systems using a digital twin and design structure matrix

Purpose As the engineering design process becomes increasingly complex, multidisciplinary teams need to work together, integrating diverse expertise across a range of disciplinary models. Where changes arise, these design teams often find it difficult to handle these design changes due to the complexity and interdependencies inherent in engineering systems. This paper aims to develop an innovative approach to clarifying system interdependencies and predicting the design change propagation at the asset level in complex engineering systems based on the digital-twin-driven design structure matrix (DSM). design/methodology/approach The paper first defines the digital-twin-driven DSM in terms of elements and interdependencies, where the authors have defined three types of interdependency, namely, geospatial, physical and logical, at the asset level. The digital twin model was then used to generate the large-scale DSMs of complex engineering systems. The cluster analysis was further conducted based on the improved Idicula-Gutierrez-Thebeau algorithm (IGTA-Plus) to decompose such DSMs into modules for the convenience and efficiency of predicting design change propagation. Finally, a design change propagation prediction method based on the digital-twin-driven DSM has been developed by integrating the change prediction method (CPM), a load-capacity model and fuzzy linguistics. A section of an infrastructure mega-project in London was selected as a case study to illustrate and validate the developed approach. Findings The digital-twin-driven DSM has been formally defined by the spatial algebra and Industry Foundation Classes (IFC) schema. Based on the definitions, an innovative approach has been further developed to (1) automatically generate a digital-twin-driven DSM through the use of IFC files, (2) to decompose these large-scale DSMs into modules through the use of IGTA-Plus and (3) predict the design change propagation by integrating a digital-twin-driven DSM, CPM, a load

Product modular analysis with design structure matrix using a hybrid approach based on MDS and clustering

Modular analysis using the design structure matrix (DSM) identifies the interactions between groups of components, and clusters them into modules in order to achieve competitive advantages in the product design processes. In this paper, a hybrid approach, based on multidimensional scaling (MDS) and clustering methods, is applied to component DSM for product architecting. The motivation is to facilitate better modularizations that enhance different product attributes in various product lifecycle stages. An experimental framework is developed to evaluate the performance of MDS clustering. Three MDS methods and four ubiquitous clustering methods are compared to reveal the most suitable for DSMs. The experimental results with several examples demonstrate that the effectiveness of MDS clustering, and show the superiority of non-metric MDS, SMACOF (Scaling by MAjorizing a Complicated Function) and hierarchical/cosine methods. These methods are capable of partitioning the product architecture into a set of modules and outperform the Newman-Girven algorithm, which has been extensively applied to DSM clustering. The proposed method is capable of partitioning the product architecture into reasonable modules. In addition, it can produce the optimal modules for any number of clusters, which is favourable especially when the cluster number is a higher managerial decision.
