The paper deals with the design and testing of a power generation system for the future and existing aircrafts. A new design algorithm of the power generation components is presented. The proposed design algorithm was tested on a prototype: a full-size starter-generator and transformer-rectifier unit prototype was created with a transformer magnetic core made up of an amorphous magnetic material. Its stand tests were carried out both for each element and for the entire system. The proposed algorithm can be used to create power supply systems for aircraft with different voltage levels, including 270 Vdc and 200 Vac. The developed power generation system turned out to be 25-40% better than serial solutions by mass and efficiency.

A distributed power generation system uses an intermittent power source that provides low power. Furthermore, it cannot be centrally controlled from the perspective of the system operator. The photovoltaic (PV) power generation system is installed with an energy storage system (ESS) to increase the power source quality compared to that possible with PV-only power generation. In this paper, an estimation algorithm is proposed for improving battery capacity to construct a suitable and economical system. In addition, an optimal algorithm is proposed that considers different factors. For example, the cost of constructing the battery and the amount of electric power sales reflecting the renewable energy certificate weighting factor of 5.0 are based on the cost of the battery construction, depth of battery discharge, charge/discharge cycle of the battery, cost of the energy conversion device, operation maintenance cost, and charge cycle of the battery. The optimized battery capacity is calculated by considering the correlation between PV power and meteorological parameters, construction cost, and the benefit of the amount of electricity sold, with an error rate of 5.75%.

To date, design guidance for hydraulic flocculators has been limited, with several articles focusing on the design of horizontally-baffled flocculators. In this article, a design algorithm for vertically-baffled flocculators is introduced based on physical principles governing baffled hydraulic flocculator performance. Vertically-baffled flocculators are more compact than their horizontally-baffled counterparts for design flow rates less than about 170 L/s (4 MGD). To accommodate narrow baffle spacings at the lowest flow rates, this work introduces the concept of obstacles, which are placed on baffles to enhance mixing to maintain the same mixing efficiency attainable in larger flocculators. Well-designed hydraulic flocculators have more uniform velocity gradients than conventional mechanical flocculators;approach plug-flow behavior, which has faster flocculation kinetics and less short-circuiting;and are less expensive to operate and maintain. design algorithms based on theoretical and practical considerations are developed, after which two illustrative design examples are given. Afterward, a discussion of the range of applicability for vertically-baffled and horizontally-baffled flocculators is presented. Cost comparisons with horizontally-baffled flocculators and mechanical flocculators are then made and turbidity performance data are provided. This vertically-baffled flocculator design approach has been proven in Central America, where it has been used to design 17 flocculators that are currently in use and have demonstrated dependable performance and low-cost operation and maintenance.

Radar signal design in a spectrally crowded environment is currently a challenge due to the increasing requests for spectrum from both military sensing applications and civilian wireless services. The goal of this paper is to improve a previously devised algorithm for the synthesis of optimized radar waveforms fulfilling spectral compatibility with overlaid licensed radiators. The new technique achieves an enhanced spectral coexistence with the surrounding electromagnetic environment through a suitable modulation of the transmitted waveform energy, which was kept fixed at the maximum level in the previously devised algorithm. At the analysis stage, the waveform performance is studied in terms of trade-off among the achievable Signal to Interference Plus Noise Ratio (SINR), spectral shape, and the resulting Autocorrelation Function (ACF), also in situations where the previous technique cannot be applied.

Recently, the hysteresis motors have a special significance in the nuclear industries. This is because these motors have some advantages such as low noise, high mechanical strength and group feeding ability. They also have some disadvantages that make some limitations for related industries. These disadvantages include low synchronization torque, low power factor, low efficiency, and hunting. One solution to reduce these disadvantages is to combine the hysteresis motor with the PM motor. This however requires a correct and flexible design procedure as well as an appropriate choice of the machine structure. Accordingly, this paper aims to present a new design algorithm for a disc-type permanent magnet hysteresis synchronous (PMHS) hybrid motor. The proposed design algorithm not only tries to retain the positive features of the both motors in the resulted hybrid motor, but it also gives the user the option of determining the percentage of the combination of the two motors. In other words, the user can determine the contribution of each motor to the output power of the resulted motor. The proposed algorithm is finally validated through fabricating a prototype disc-type PMHS motor and evaluating its performance by simulation and experiment.

This work is concerned with the definition of an algorithm for the design of fast parallel counters suitable for counting 1's in large arrays of binary signal sources. One example of such systems is the silicon photomultiplier (SiPM), consisting of an array of SPADs (single photon avalanche diodes) each one providing a high output level when hit by a photon. This paper presents a ring-based SDH optical core network design problem with multiple constraints. A novel evolutionary algorithm (EA) is developed to successfully find near-optimal solutions for a realistic case study. Compared to a genetic algorithm, this EA is demonstrated to be more efficient and effective by experimental simulation results, and shows promise for tackling ring-based network design problems.

This Note presented a new station collocation parameter design techniquebased on a virtual dynamic model. The new methodology is applicable to collision-free operation ofmultiple geostationary satellites collocated at the same longitudinal slot. A minimum set ofparameters was used as input, which automatically produces the optimal position of the eccentricitycontrol circles by using the virtual dynamics. Simulation results illustrate that the proposedstrategy properly calculates the positions of the eccentricity control circle for any number ofsatellites with guaranteed maximum separation distance. The advantage of the proposed technique isthat the collocation of any number of satellites can be treated with natural extension of thecurrent methodology.

This paper presents a very efficient algorithm for performance-driven topology design for interconnects. Given a net, it first generates A-tree(1) topology using table lookup and net-breaking. Then a performance-driven post-processing heuristic not restricting to A-tree topology improves the obtained topology by considering the sink positions, required time and load capacitance to achieve better timing. Experimental results show that our new technique can produce topologies with better timing and is hundreds of times faster than traditional approach.
