The paper presents an algorithm for the design of a single functional observer for a linear time-varying system. The proposed constructive procedure can be iterated to obtain a minimal order for the observer where the existence conditions are fufilled. As a specific feature, this procedure does not require the solution of any differential Sylvester equation.

This paper focuses on the magnetic design of a multi-coil system for an inductive power transfer (IPT) system for charging electric vehicles with a small air gap between transmitter and receiver coils. Thus, external stray fields can be reduced and the expense of material decreases compared to systems using a large air gap. The magnetic design of the multi-coil system is optimized for the given package space of the vehicle by using a new coupled numeric approach and considering additional coil geometries as well as alternative winding structures. The result of this design process presents the basis to build up a prototype system, including an additional secondary side DC/DC converter. Therewith, an efficiency between 92% and 96% at an output power of up to 3.5 kW is achieved.

We propose a network design algorithm that can make the best use of the newly developed WSS/WBSS-combined OXC architecture for the creation of cost-effective large capacity optical networks. Simulation results verify that a significant overall network cost reduction can be obtained by applying our proposed network design algorithm and the developed OXC architecture.

We present a new multiple description source coding scheme based oil tree-structured vector quantization (TSVQ). In this scheme, the codebook of each decoder is organized in a binary tree. The encoding is greedy and based on a sequence of binary decisions as in traditional TSVQ. Each binary decision of the encoder corresponds to adding information on one of the available channels and the encoding complexity can be shown to be proportional to the total bitrate. We describe the encoder structure for the two-channel case, and propose an entropy-constrained design algorithm based on marginal return analysis. Experimental results on a Gaussian source are presented for various design parameters and the generalization of the scheme to more than two channels is outlined.

This paper describes a feature-based algorithm for automated design of multi-piece sacrificial molds. Our mold design algorithm consists of the following three steps. First, the desired gross mold shape is created based on the feature-based description of the part geometry. Second, if the desired gross mold shape is not machinable as a single component, then the gross mold shape is decomposed into simpler geometric components to make sure that each component is machinable using 3-axis CNC machining. The decomposition is performed to ensure that each component is accessible to end-milling tools, and decomposed components can be assembled together to form the gross mold shape. Finally, assembly features are added to mold components to eliminate unnecessary degrees of freedom from the final mold assembly to facilitate molding. © 2001 by ASME.

Scalability of current programmable FIR filter design methods are severely limited by the huge search space for common subexpressions and the density of unique subexpressions over the complete range of integers of desirable precision. This paper presents the first attempt to solve this problem by means of Canonical Double-Based Number Representation (CDBNR). We address the representation sparsity of generic filter coefficients by developing a simplified CDBNR search algorithm. The statistics generated for all double base products of a given coefficient word length are used to maximize the sharing of arithmetic operators and reduce the multiplexing cost. The effectiveness and scalability of the proposed design algorithm are demonstrated using two design examples. For the 8-bit programmable filter example implementable by two latest design methods, our proposed solution saves about 24% of arithmetic operator and multiplexer costs for large filter.

Concentrated windings have several advantages over conventional distributed windings. However, the recent attempts to apply concentrated windings to multi-phase induction motors in the literature resulted in poor performance because of imperfect spatial distribution of the air gap MMF. The pseudo-concentrated winding is an alternative, which produces better performances compared to the conventional concentrated windings in the induction motor applications. However, using pseudo-concentrated windings in prefabricated induction motor cores is not appropriate. Accordingly, the motor should be specifically designed for applying pseudo-concentrated winding considering features such as short end-winding length and low MMF amplitude compared to the distributed windings.

Deadlock avoidance is important and hard for system designer of job-shop scheduling problem (JSP), especially in multi-resource sharing system. This paper addressed a deadlock-free design method of JSP with multi-resource sharing, which some operation may need more than one kind of resource. Timed Petri net(TPN) is used to formulate this problem and to analyze deadlock in order to get the makespan. Based on TPN, dead marking and dead transitions are detected by transformation of marking, and a condition of deadlock is given. Furthermore, deadlock recovery method is presented by adding some control places on dead transitions, and a deadlock free design algorithm is proposed. The efficiency of the method proposed is illustrated by an example in the end.

Coherent multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar systems with co-located antennas, form monostatic virtual arrays by discrete convolution of a bistatic setup of transmitters and receivers. Thereby, a trade-off between maximum array dimension, element spacing and hardware efforts exists. In terms of estimating the direction of arrival, the covariance matrix of the array element signals plays an important role. Here, minimum redundancy arrays aim at a hardware reduction with signal reconstruction by exploiting the Toeplitz characteristics of the covariance matrix. However, the discrete spatial convolution complicates the finding of an optimal antenna setup with minimum redundancy. Combinatorial effort is the consequence. This paper presents a possible simplified algorithm in order to find MIMO array setups of maximum dimension with minimum redundancy.

This paper presents super-twisting-like smooth observer design for systems of dimension more than one. The major advantage of the proposed observers is finite-time convergence of the estimation error to zero and smoothness of the observer trajectory. The paper concludes with numerical simulations illustrating performance of the designed algorithms.
