Recently, economical aspects of education have become an important issue for everyone who is in the educational sector since they have to operate on restricted budgets. Therefore, the limited resources of educational institutions have necessitated the development of novel teaching materials. The aim of this study is to design and implement a low-cost compact Modular Production System controlled by a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system. This compact MPS has the following stations: identification, transport, processing, sorting, and storing. All these stations are placed on a common platform and connected to the same PLC system. Therefore, it is proposed that this system can be called as "7Multitask Modular Production System" (MTMPS). The benefits of the realized MTMPS are threefold. This system resulted in savings both for occupied space and cost of equipment. Savings for occupied space is nearly 70% while it is about 80% for the cost of equipment. The duration of training are also reduced by 60% with the implementation of this MTMPS. This study also includes evaluation of training course conducted on the MTMPS and conventional MPS units. As a result of this training, which employs the MTMPS unit, the students were expected to enhance their various cognitive skills. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Task-oriented modular design and safety monitoring are demonstrated to be outstanding challenges for robots in practical application. In order to obtain better flexibility and better obstacles avoidance capability, design and analysis of a modular cable-driven parallel robot (MCDPR) are presented in this paper, which can be reconfigured to several configurations in engineering applications by changing the number of the mobile modules and the connection mode of the end effector. With regard to the motion control and safety monitoring system, the design and implementation of hardware and software are presented. An experimental prototype for the MCDPR is developed, followed by a brief illustration of the connection mode between the end effector and cables, and the installation of monitoring nodes. The performance of the MCDPR is discussed experimentally, including real-time pose monitoring and obstacle avoidance. The results verify the feasibility and efficiency of kinematics model and obstacle avoidance method, and the results also indicate that the designed motion control and safety monitoring system can realize trajectory tracking control, real-time safety monitoring, and obstacle avoidance for the MCDPR.

The high-performance marine meteorological broadcasting system can help navigating ships to keep up with the weather information along the way in real time, which is of great significance to ship navigation safety. Based on the Internet of Things (IoT) technology, this paper builds a marine meteorological broadcasting system. It analyses the task management process of temperature acquisition by mu C/OS-II real-time operating systems, and takes data collection and analysis, data reception, and data display as examples for system tests. The research results showed that the system is stable in operation and accurate in data measurement, and achieves data receiving, real-time display, and remote data transmission. This study promotes the theoretical and practical research of marine meteorological monitoring, which is of great significance for improving the safety of marine development.

Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) has been widely used in the marine environment monitoring. The safety and reliability of the USV, especially the power supply systems, is very important. In this paper, a power supply system with PHM is proposed for USV, Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is used as the main controller. Fault diagnosis, fault location and fault isolation can be implemented by acquiring the voltage and current information of all power equipment. At the same time, the fault prediction and health management of the whole ship is carried out by collecting the temperature, humidity, vibration and other information of every part of the USV. The power supply system and the Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) architecture proposed in this paper can be used for USV maintenance decision in the future.

Gastrointestinal stimulator implants have recently shown promising results in helping obese patients lose weight. However, to place the implant, the patient currently needs to undergo an invasive surgical procedure. We report a less invasive procedure to stimulate the stomach with a gastrostimulator. After attempting fully endoscopic implantation, we more recently focused on a single incision percutaneous procedure. In both cases, the challenges in electronic design of the implant are largely similar. This article covers the work achieved to meet these and details the in vivo validation of a gastrostimulator aimed to be endoscopically placed and anchored to the stomach.

Information technology (IT) tends to be viewed as ancillary to core government functions. Consequently, IT is often outsourced to the private sector. Unfortunately, there is a long line of failed outsourced projects. This article uses two New Zealand case studies, the particularly public failure of the recent school payroll system and the successful introduction of electronic immigration processing, to examine how the design and governance of outsourced government IT projects could be improved. It concludes that an awareness of historic trends is important for project success, that governments need to be more active in combating market based transaction costs and that contract management becomes a core government competency when projects are outsourced. It also argues that better change management and cognisance of design-reality gaps would positively impact the outcomes of future projects.

In this paper we describe an architecture and implementation of the ACTOR model of concurrent computation which exploits the multi-core processors of modern day computer architectures. A novel aspect of our approach, and where it differs from many other implementations, is that it is hosted in an existing programming language as native constructs;we employ Swift which is rapidly rising in popularity but in its standard distribution lacks the facilities for true concurrent programming. We describe an extension to the language which enables access to concurrent features and provides an API for supporting such interactions. We consider the various architectural issues, competing approaches, and discuss early findings from our prototype implementation.
