HEAVISIDE BASED OPTIMAL CONTROL FOR RIDE COMFORT AND ACTUATION ENERGY OPTIMISATION IN HALF-CAR SUSPENSION SYSTEMS

The objective of this paper is to present a design and implementation of an energy efficient optimal controller for a constructed half-car suspension system. The controller's performance index is designed to optimise actuation energy and ride comfort. The physical constraints of the constructed model are incorporated into the system's states using the Heaviside function. The optimal control signal is achieved through the Hamiltonian optimal condition bounded by the physical constraints of the constructed model such as the suspension rattle space. The optimal control problem is solved as a boundary value problem in Matlab, where the constructed half-car suspension system model is perturbed by a road disturbance for the active and passive testing cases. The experimental results show that ride comfort and energy optimisation is achieved through reduction of the front and rear sprung mass displacement and accelerations. © 2017

epiC: an Extensible and Scalable System for Processing Big Data

The Big Data problem is characterized by the so-called 3V features: volume - a huge amount of data, velocity - a high data ingestion rate, and variety - a mix of structured data, semi-structured data, and unstructured data. The state-of-the-art solutions to the Big Data problem are largely based on the MapReduce framework (aka its open source implementation Hadoop). Although Hadoop handles the data volume challenge successfully, it does not deal with the data variety well since the programming interfaces and its associated data processing model are inconvenient and inefficient for handling structured data and graph data. This paper presents epiC, an extensible system to tackle the Big Datas data variety challenge. epiC introduces a general Actor-like concurrent programming model, independent of the data processing models, for specifying parallel computations. Users process multi-structured datasets with appropriate epiC extensions, and the implementation of a data processing model best suited for the data type and auxiliary code for mapping that data processing model into epiCs concurrent programming model. Like Hadoop, programs written in this way can be automatically parallelized and the runtime system takes care of fault tolerance and inter-machine communications. We present the design and implementation of epiCs concurrent programming model. We also present two customized data processing models, an optimized MapReduce extension and a relational model, on top of epiC. We show how users can leverage epiC to process heterogeneous data by linking different types of operators together. To improve the performance of complex analytic jobs, epiC supports a partition-based optimization technique where data are streamed between the operators to avoid the high I/O overheads. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our proposed epiC.

Autonomous Underwater Vehicle Robust Path Tracking: Auto-Adjustable Gain High Order Sliding Mode Controller

This paper deals with the design and implementation of a nonlinear control strategy to solve the path tracking problem for an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) under model uncertainties and external disturbances. First, the AUV model is transformed into the so-called regular form by an appropriate selection of state variables. The method is based on the second-order sliding mode technique known as Generalized Super-Twisting Algorithm (GSTA) introducing the design of an auto-adjustable gain controller which offers a way to ensure robustness to modeling errors and bounded external disturbances. The control law is designed to maintain a minimum margin of error in the trajectory tracking of the AUV even in the presence of damping and buoyancy disturbances. Finally, experimental results are also provided to illustrate the performances of the closed-loop system using the proposed controller. © 2018

Cooling Device with Peltier Element for Medical Applications

The first part of this article is an overview of portable cooling devices used for biomedical applications (especially for horse tissues therapy). Commonly used methods list is supplemented by examples of specific applications. The Peltier device used in experimental work is described and physical principles are presented with its focus in the realized cooling system. Further important parameters of Peltier elements are presented and their efficiency evaluated with an example of parameters of selected cells. The second part describes the design and implementation of the regulation in cooling system itself. There is a brief analysis of the capabilities of cooling system regulator with the Peltier devices as actuator, short description of used micro-controller, circuit diagram of the complete cooling circuit and conclusions of the individual design procedures. At the end there are experimental results presented. © 2018

Control System design of a Vertical Take-off and Landing Fixed-Wing UAV

In this study, design and implementation of control system of a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) with level flight capability is considered. The platform structure includes both multirotor and fixed-wing (FW) conventional aircraft control surfaces; therefore named as VTOL-FW. The proposed method includes implementation of multirotor and airplane controllers and design of an algorithm to switch between them in achieving transitions between VTOL and FW flight modes. Thus, VTOL-FW UAV's flight characteristics are expected to be improved by enabling agile maneuvers, increasing survivability and exploiting full flight envelope capabilities. © 2016

The use of simulation in the design of Milk-Run intralogistics systems

This paper describes methodology of milk-run system design and implementation. The methodology consists of seven basic steps and includes the use of simulation technology as a tool to support design, analysis, verification and implementation of milk-run concept. Exemplary simulation model of milk-run system is based on hybrid modelling approach, using discrete-event and agent-based simulations. The approach is implemented in FlexSim simulation software. Paper contains a description and illustrations showing the most important elements of the milk-run system in simulation model. © 2018

Wireless Measurement of Carbon Dioxide by use of IQRF Technology

The paper focuses on the design and implementation of a comprehensive monitoring system that allows long-term monitoring of selected environmental quantities especially in the interior of buildings and visualizing them using modern SW tools. The measured quantities in this case include CO2 concentration, temperature, humidity and atmospheric pressure. The sensor part of the system uses Figaro CDM7160, Bosch BME280 and Microchip MCP9802 sensors. The IQMESH network is based on the advanced IQRF wireless technology that allows coverage of vast areas with the wireless monitoring system. Measured data from individual measurement modules is sent using Raspberry Pi or via commercial Internet gateways to native IQRF cloud storage. From there, it is forwarded through a script to a MySQL database running on the university www server, which subsequently provides for processing and visualization using the Grafana SW system. © 2018

Platform Independent Multi-Agent System for Robust Networks of Production Systems

The production of customized products requires a flexible production process. Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS) are currently seen as one possibility to achieve this goal, since flexibility for the production processes can be achieved by enabling cross-company collaboration. However, to fully implement CPPS for heterogeneous production systems an application and hardware platform independent, robust, and distributed software solution is required. This paper proposes a novel design and implementation for a Multi-Agent System (MAS), that can be used to create application independent CPPS. To support a variety of hardware platforms, the MAS was designed as a lightweight implementation in the programming language ANSI C. The proposed concept was evaluated by different use cases and experiments, which, in a first step, evaluated the efficiency of design and implementation. © 2018

Development of Soft Sensors for the Case Where the Time Delay is Random

Time delay and sampling rate are two conditions that can make the design and implementation of soft sensors difficult due limiting the amount of information that can be obtained about the true process. Another wrinkle is the fact that neither of these two parameters is necessarily constant, with the value changing due to changes in the process. One such area of concern is the hot steel mill rolling process, where variable time delay can lead to problems with controlling the process. This paper seeks to examine the appropriate design of the bias update term of the soft sensor in light of variable, but known, time delays for a process operating with constant sampling rate and for both open- and closed-loop conditions. Using a mathematical approach to the problem, the previous results are extended to consider such a case. It is shown that if the process has variable time delay, then designing the bias update term in the soft sensor is very important, as it can have implications for process stability and trackability. Simulations are included to show the impact of different bias update terms. © 2016
