Industry 4.0 – An Introduction in the phenomenon

The goal of the paper is to introduce specialists from industry into the important phenomenon of the recent technology and to explain cyber – physical and informatics background of the platform Industry 4.0 and basic steps in any design and implementation of the Industry 4.0 systems. Authors introduce readers in both the RAMI 4.0 as well as the Industry 4.0 Components models which represent necessary initial background of any Industry 4.0 application. The main stress is given to the Industry 4.0 components model, which enables designers from firms to understand already existing Industry 4.0 case studies and to develop their first Industry 4.0 case studies applications. © 2016

design and Implementation of a Control and Navigation System for a Small Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

This paper describes the development of a control and navigation system for a small scale unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) using as strategy a combination of classical control and Fuzzy Inference Systems (FIS). In this sense, the air-plane has been modelled through analytical techniques that use empirical estimations to compute the force and moment components acting on the aircraft. The control systems were designed using the aircraft's transfer functions to reach a desirable response for each command. Finally, the navigation control system is designed using a FIS to control the roll of the aircraft and the yaw control system to control the aircraft's heading. A route composed of waypoints is generated following a rummage of a selected area. The control systems are, then, tested in a simulated environment to ensure they accomplish the desired mission when they work together. © 2016

Automated Plant Viability System for Early Detection of Plant Disease

This paper reports on the design and implementation of a plant viability sensor system based on micro fabrication and wireless communication technologies. The system consists of a Solid Phase Micro-extraction (SPME) Injector, a gas chromatography column with OV-1 coating, a low power thermal conductivity sensor, and a circuit design. The system uses the SPME injection method which allows injection of small amounts of analytes into the GC system instantly. The column with a 2 dimensional temperature programming provides a better separation of the volatile compounds and the CMOS TCD sensors provides high resolution for detection of a low concentration. A 12 bit microcontroller with a low noise circuit system and a Bluetooth communication technology are implemented for live monitoring of the VOC gases. The documented performance shows that the system is able to detect and transmit the volatile organic compounds of interest to a handheld device. © 2016

Option-Based design for Resilient Manufacturing Systems

The concept of the resilience is new for manufacturing systems and it has not been widely considered in design and implementation of systems such as discrete manufacturing systems and multistage manufacturing systems. As a result, the systems can be interrupted by various kinds of disturbance, e.g., component degradation and abrupt failures. This research is devoted to defining new resilience metrics, developing new modeling and analysis tools to evaluate resilience, and pursuing option-based resilience design strategies including built-in redundancy, built-in flexibility and preventive actions, in order to mitigate the impact of failure-induced disruptions on the performance of manufacturing systems. © 2016

This paper presents the design and implementation of a distributed adaptive fault-tolerant leader-following formation control scheme for a team of uncertain cooperative mobile robots under a bidirectional communication topology with possibly asymmetric weights and subject to actuator and nonlinear process faults. A local fault-tolerant control (FTC) component is designed for each ground robot using local measurements and suitable information exchanged between neighboring agents. Each local FTC component consists of a fault diagnosis module and a reconfigurable controller module comprised of a baseline controller and two adaptive fault-tolerant controllers activated after fault detection and after fault isolation, respectively. The FTC algorithms are implemented and demonstrated using a team of ground mobile robots. © 2018

This paper presents the design and implementation of a novel class of substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) filters, based on partially air-filled cavity resonators. Removing the dielectric in a portion of the SIW cavity allows obtaining dual-mode cavities: Such cavities represent a doublet, used as the building blocks in the design of filters. A thorough modal analysis of the air-filled resonant cavity based on transmission lines' representation and a detailed study of the doublet permit to demonstrate a full control of the operation frequency, pass bandwidth, spurious-free region, and position of the transmission zeros of the filter. This paper presents the design, fabrication, and measurement of several two-pole filters based on this concept, with the aim to show the capabilities of the proposed structure and of the design technique. A five-pole filter is also presented, to describe the extension of the proposed approach to higher order filters. © 2017 IEEE.
