This paper illustrates a global design methodology in the case of a simple switching cell, used in a DC-DC converter. The aim is to account simultaneously for all parameters and constraints involved in the design of the converter: thermal aspects, EMC filter and design of passives. Specific models are developed, validated and implemented in a dedicated optimization framework Results are discussed, with a specific emphasis on EMC filter.

Physics-Based design by optimization of Unconventional Supercavitating Hydrofoils

A computational framework to design a new family of unconventional supercavitating (SC) hydrofoils with optimized hydrodynamic performance is developed. A low-order boundary element method is used to solve for the steady potential flow over the hydrofoil predicting its hydrodynamic characteristics, including the vapor cavity interface. Shape variations are obtained by an ad hoc parametrization scheme by composite B-spline curves whose control points represent the design variables to the hydrodynamic optimization problem. The accuracy of the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools is also preventively validated on the experimental characteristics of a conventional SC hydrofoil. A computational test case is performed to maximize the efficiency of a SC hydrofoil accounting for both shape and angle of attack variations. The new hydrofoil leads to 40% improvement on the lift over drag ratio compared to the initial reference shape. This result is confirmed by high-fidelity unsteady multiphase viscous solver.

This paper deals with the formulation and programing of architecture of software component generated by Reluctool. This software tool allows the modeling of large reluctance networks of electrical machines. Portable model formulation and code architectures are introduced facing the model generation time, the model size, and the computation time. Different approaches are discussed to improve this aspect. Finally, the code architecture is compared with the actual code architecture of the commercial and previous version of Reluctool.

w This paper presents a methodology for the design by optimization of an electric machine considering several operating cycles. This is achieved by simplifying the operating cycles using a k-means clustering algorithm. K-means clustering is used to simplify three operating cycles: WLTP, highway and urban. The three simplified cycles are then considered in the design optimization of a permanent magnet synchronous machine with the objective of minimizing the losses of both the electrical machine and the voltage inverter. The machine is represented by a magnetic equivalent circuit model and the voltage inverter losses by an analytical model. Then, the three optima (obtained for each cycle) are characterized and compared in terms of performance over these drive cycles.

This paper proposes a synthesis of EMC filter design method for power electronics converters. It starts with the description of the legacy approach, using the usual Common Mode / Differential Mode decomposition, and underlines the need of symmetry and the associated limits. Then an illustration of a design by optimization process is provided in the case of a simple switching cell. Finally, a full system composed of a PFC rectifier is provided, using EMC filters on both AC and DC sides. This example requires a design by optimization, since the two filters exhibit strong interactions.

The paper deals with the design and control of an example of redundantly actuated parallel kinematic structure that can be a machine tool. The principle of redundant actuation brings parallel kinematic structures which do not have singular positions in workspace and which has increased dynamic, stiffness and accuracy properties. There is proposed a parallel kinematic structure called Sliding Star that has promising dynamic and stiffness properties. The conceptual design-by-optimization of this structure is briefly described. The redundantly actuated parallel kinematics have control problem due to mutual fighting of redundant drives. There is described the solution of this problem. Based on the investigated redundantly actuated parallel kinematics there has been built a laboratory prototype. The experimental results from the control of this prototype are briefly presented.

This paper presents findings from an optimal design study on a switched reluctance machine operating in both motoring and generating modes as automotive integrated starter/alternator. The design optimization approach employs an analytical lumped-parameter modelling of the switched reluctance machine in motor and generator operations, which is refined by finite-element magnetic field analysis of the machine and then implemented in MATLAB/Simulink environment. The objective function of the design optimization problem is the maximization of the average electromagnetic torque of the machine for motor operating mode under constraints on rotor speed, energy efficiency and torque ripple. Steady-state and dynamic simulation results for the optimally-designed switched reluctance machine in motoring and generating modes, as part of automotive integrated starter/alternator operation cycle, are also provided.

On the design of high-performance wide-band continuous-time sigma-delta converters using numerical optimization

Continuous-time (CT) sigma-delta (Sigma Delta) modulators are growing increasingly popular in wide-band analog-digital conversion. High orders of quantization noise shaping, and multibit quantizers, are used to compensate for the low oversampling ratios in wide-band applications. These, however, add circuit complexities and excess loop delay that are detrimental to the Sigma Delta control loop. This paper presents an exact mathematical analysis technique, based on the CT-discrete time equivalence, that can take these effects into account. A design-by-optimization approach based on that analysis is used to compensate for these effects, avoid intractability issues and to gain flexibility in the design. It is also shown that it is advantageous not to fix the position of the quantization noise-shaping zeros in the signal band.

Numerical design of a RIM-driven thruster using a RANS-based optimization approach

A simulation-based design optimization (SBDO) tool is proposed for the design of rim driven thrusters. The optimization framework consists of a parametric description of the rim blade geometry and a multi-objective optimization algorithm which makes use of the results from high-fidelity RANS calculations to drive the choice towards optimal blade shapes. Maximization of the propulsive efficiency and minimization of cavitation, monitored through the simplest cavitation inception criterion based on the analysis of the non-cavitating pressure distribution over the blade, are the contrasting objectives selected for the design. A constraint on the delivered thrust fixes the functioning condition of the devised propellers. Four distinct design runs, changing the number of blades, from three to six, are considered. The reference performance are those of a ducted propeller operating in a decelerating nozzle which is exactly used in the case of rim configuration. Results of the optimizations prove the flexibility and the reliability of the SBDO framework in dealing with unconventional configurations. A generalized reduction of the risk of cavitation is observed regardless the number of blades;five and six-bladed propulsors ensure remarkable (about 40%) higher margins with respect to any (leading edge and midchord) cavitating phenomena at the cost only of a slight reduction of efficiency. Also, the structure of the tip vortexes results significantly modified.
