What is in a name? On the misuse of information theoretic dispersion measures as design complexity metrics

Many metrics of design complexity have been proposed in the literature. Of these, the most popular are information theoretic metrics, such as information content based on Suh's axiomatic theory and differential entropy based on Shannon's information theory. In this paper, we show that these metrics do not provide common sense measures of complexity, and they also do not possess proper mathematical properties. At best, they are geared towards measuring a designs goodness-of-fit rather than its complexity. At least in part, the inappropriate use of these metrics can be attributed to misuse of terms such as entropy' and minimise information content'.

User evaluations of design complexity: The impact of visual perceptions for effective online health communication

Objective: This paper highlights the influential role of design complexity for users' first impressions of health websites. Method: An experimental design was utilized to investigate whether a website's level of design complexity impacts user evaluations. An online questionnaire measured the hypothesized impact of design complexity on predictors of message effectiveness. Results: Findings reveal that increased design complexity was positively associated with higher levels of perceived design esthetics, attitude toward the website, perceived message comprehensibility, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, perceived message quality, perceived informativeness, and perceived visual informativeness. Conclusion: This research gives further evidence that design complexity should be considered an influential variable for health communicators to effectively reach their audiences, as it embodies the critical first step for message evaluation via electronic platforms. A real-time assessment of the ship design complexity

The paper introduces an innovative complexity metric for passenger ships taking into account the shape complexity of steel parts, the assembly complexity and the material complexity. The goal is to provide the designer with such information throughout the design process so that an efficient design is obtained at the first design run. Real-time assessment of complexity and quality measurements is rather imperative to ensure efficient and effective optimality search, and to allow real-time adjustment of requirements during the design. Application and validation on a real passenger ship show that the new method is effective in giving a complementary aid to decision process for ship designers. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. Measuring design complexity of semantic web ontologies

Ontology languages such as OWL are being widely used as the Semantic Web movement gains momentum. With the proliferation of the Semantic Web, more and more large-scale ontologies are being developed in real-world applications to represent and integrate knowledge and data. There is an increasing need for measuring the complexity of these ontologies in order for people to better understand, maintain, reuse and integrate them. In this paper, inspired by the concept of software metrics, we propose a suite of ontology metrics, at both the ontology-level and class-level, to measure the design complexity of ontologies. The proposed metrics are analytically evaluated against Weyuker's criteria. We have also performed empirical analysis on public domain ontologies to show the characteristics and usefulness of the metrics. We point out possible applications of the proposed metrics to ontology quality control. We believe that the proposed metric suite is useful for managing ontology development projects. complexity in a manufacturing system can lead to unnecessary costs due to an increase in manufacturing uncertainty that negatively affects the reliability and controllability of the system. Despite the importance of understanding complexity in manufacturing, the conceptualization of complexity for an additive manufacturing (AM) system and its impact on operational performance have not been clearly articulated in the literature. As a response, this study characterizes a complexity measure relevant to AM and identifies the impact of the complexity on operational performance in an AM system. For this, design complexity for AM is defined by considering both the volume ratio and area ratio of a part design. Then, a virtual AM plant for aircraft parts is built by a discrete event simulation to derive the average order lead time of each part design. A linear regression analysis is performed to understand the impact of the calculated design complexity on the AM performance. As a result, this study shows that design complexity negatively affects the average order lead time of the AM system. The findings from this study indicate that the design aspects of complexity for an AM based system should be properly managed to improve its operational performance.

It's a question of talent! The interplay of design complexity and talent information on consumers' product design responses

Purpose Existing research on product design has found that a design's complexity is an important antecedent of consumers' aesthetic and behavioural responses. This paper aims to shed new light on the relationship between design complexity and perceptions of design quality by taking the effects of consumers' naive theories into account. design/methodology/approach The hypotheses of this paper are tested in a series of three experiments. Findings The findings from three studies show that the extent to which consumers prefer more complex product designs to simpler ones depends on the extent to which they believe that the complexity of a design is indicative of the effort or of the talent of the designers involved in the design process. These competing naive theories, in turn, are triggered by contextual information that consumers have at their disposal, such as the professional background of a designer or the brand that is associated with a particular design. Research limitations/implications This research was limited to a design's complexity as the central design element and to the effects of two naive theories. Future research may also take other design factors and consumer heuristics into account. Practical implications This research reveals that the extent to which managers may successfully introduce both complex and simple designs may depend on the reputation of a company's designers and the prestige of a brand. Originality/value This research examines design complexity from a novel theoretical perspective and shows that the effect of design complexity on perceptions of design quality is contingent on two specific naive theories of consumers.

Understanding design complexity for additive manufacturing (AM) is essential in AM production planning since conventional make-to-order production for individual AM orders of complex designs can amplify operational uncertainty in an entire AM production system. As a response, this study aims not only to demonstrate the impact of design complexity on AM production but also to propose a novel order dispatching approach based on design complexity that mitigates operational uncertainty in an AM production system. First, a design complexity measure was developed using an information theoretic approach. Next, a discrete-event simulation model to represent an AM production system consisting of parallel AM machines for jet-engine bracket designs was built to identify the impact of design complexity on average order lead time and total production cost through regressions. Finally, a flexible order dispatching rule that reflects operational attitudes toward design complexity was proposed to determine part-processing priorities by tracking both part- and system-level design complexity states in a centralized queue for AM production. The proposed dispatching rule was compared with relevant static dispatching rules to assess its performance in operational efficiency under varied attitudes toward design complexity. The findings from this study clearly showed the negative impact of design complexity on operational performance for AM production. Moreover, the proposed dispatching rule resulted in lead time reduction and balanced lead time performance in AM production against alternative static dispatching strategies. This study demonstrates the importance of design complexity-based flexible operations to properly handle latent uncertainties in an AM production system.

The complexity of the user interface design of critical healthcare devices may lead to use-related errors. Involving users as co-creators to design simple user interfaces for critical healthcare systems helps reduce user-related errors and, ultimately, lowers the risk to life. The participation of co-creators is effective in reducing the design and process complexity while developing the experimental prototype, which may help reduce cognitive load. A usability evaluation was conducted to assess the users’ perceptions and real experiences with the experimental prototype in actual settings. The participants involved in this study were requested to perform tasks on an experimental prototype and a questionnaire survey was used to gather the participants’ feedback. The results reveal that the interface design increases the user perception of usability by minimizing complexities in design because a strong association between design aspects and system simplicity was observed. The findings provide valuable insight both practically and theoretically to improve the reliability and usability of critical healthcare devices. © 2024 Copyright for this paper by its authors.

Engineering design complexity: an investigation of methods and measures

In this paper, two measures are proposed for valuation of size and coupling complexities of design products as abstracted by three distinct representations. The proposed size complexity measure is based on the information theoretic definition of complexity that connects the complexity of a design to the level of entropy, or uncertainty, inherent in the design product. The proposed coupling complexity measure evaluates the decomposability of the graph-based representation of design products. To validate the proposed measures, an experiment is conducted to calculate the complexities of three consumer products based on three product representations, namely, function structure, connectivity graph, and parametric associativity graph. The findings indicate that coupling and size are independent measures of a product's complexity. Thus, it is recommended that both measures should be used. Further, the complexity of a product is not independent of the choice of representation model used to describe the product. This suggests that the complexity of a product will vary with the selected view. Finally, it is shown that the two approaches for measuring complexity of a product are generalizable and can be applied to different representations.
