Characterisation of Organic Solvent Nanofiltration membranes in multi-component mixtures: Process design workflow for utilising targeted solvent modifications

Organic Solvent Nanofiltration (OSN) is a pressure-driven membrane separation process for separating liquid organic solvents. It can potentially be applied in chemical, petrochemical and pharmaceutical industries. In contrast to well-established design approaches for conventional unit operations such as distillation, design methods for integrating OSN in chemical production processes are very limited. The reason is a lack of information on expected OSN membrane performance as well as missing general understanding of the complicated transport mechanism through OSN membranes. Therefore, this paper introduces a workflow that accounts for the current limited information and makes a general process design feasible. This includes a solvent/membrane selection in early stages of process design beyond state-of-the art OSN membrane screening experiments that so far do not address solvent variations. As the interaction between solute, solvent and membrane material on the separation behaviour of the membrane is substantial, an integrated selection of membrane and solvent for a targeted rejection of a solute might lead to large improvements. Within the developed four-step design workflow, also the integration of design tools such as membrane rejection maps (MRM), membrane modelling maps (MMM) and OSN membrane cascade based optimisation are addressed. Targeted solvent modifications/additions may therefore result in better flux and/or rejection properties of Puramem (TM) 280 and GMT-oNF-2 and hence, in reduction of production costs. Variability embedded in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry often results from inefficient planning strategies, sub-optimal levels of coordination, and poor flow of information and resources. This inherent variability disrupts workflow in design, results in longer cycle times, increased costs, and rework;thus undermining design, as well as, construction performance. This paper addresses design workflow at the intersection of the social and process aspects of the design phase. These aspects have been studied separately in previous research works, which prevented capturing a comprehensive and realistic understanding of the design process. Accordingly, this study develops a new approach to qualitatively and quantitatively model the exchange of information between design players and pave the way to assessing the impacts of Building Information Modeling and new project procurement strategies on improving design workflow. Agent-based modeling is used to dynamically represent the relationship between social interactions and the diffusion of information between individuals and teams. The study presents a novel design workflow management approach that bridges the gaps in previous studies as it focuses on team structures, interaction dynamics, and information diffusion. On the design workflow of auxetic metamaterials for structural applications

Auxetic metamaterials exhibit an unexpected behaviour of a negative Poisson's ratio (NPR), meaning they expand transversely when stretched longitudinally. This behaviour is generated predominantly due to the way individual elements of an auxetic lattice are structured. These structures are gaining interest in a wide variety of applications such as energy absorption, sensors, smart filters, vibration isolation and medical etc. Their potential could be further exploited by the use of additive manufacturing. Currently there is a lack of guidance on how to design these structures. This paper highlights state-of-the-art in auxetic metamaterials and its commonly used unit-cell types. It further explores the design approaches used in the literature on creating auxetic lattices for different applications and proposes, for the first time, a workflow comprising design, simulation and testing of auxetic structures. This workflow provides guidance on the design process for using auxetic metamaterials in structural applications.

A streamlined design workflow that facilitates the efficient design and manufacture of patient-specific scaffolds independently applied by the surgical team has been recognised as a key step in a holistic approach towards the envisioned routine clinical translation of scaffold-guided bone regeneration (SGBR). A modular design workflow was developed to semi-automatically fill defect cavities, ensure patient specificity and ideal surgical scaffold insertion for a given surgical approach, add fixation points to secure the scaffolds to the host bone and generate scaffold based on Voronoi, periodic lattice and triply periodic minimal surface pore architectures. The adopted functional representation modelling technique produces models free from 3D printing mesh errors. It was applied to a clinical case of a complicated femoral bone defect. All models were free from mesh errors and the patient-specific fit and unobstructive insertion were validated via digital inspection and physical investigation by way of 3D printed prototypes. The real-time responsiveness of the workflow to user input allows the designer to receive real-time feedback from the surgeon, which is associated with reducing the time to finalise a patient-specific scaffold design. In summary, an efficient workflow was developed that substantially facilitates routine clinical implementation of SGBR through its ability to streamline the design of 3D printed scaffolds.

Mechatronic systems become ever more complex because of their increasing number of interconnected safety critical components and sophistication. MBSE (Model-based Systems Engineering) and MBSA (Model-Based Safety Assessment) are the most commonly adopted approaches to deal with the design and safety analysis of mechatronic systems. Unfortunately, both approaches are normally adopted separately, especially in the earlier phases of system design, thus leading to a lack of communication between system engineers and the safety team. This work aims to fill that gap at a high level, that is, through process interaction. This paper proposes an enhanced V-model for the design of safety-critical mechatronic systems. It relates a system development process with specific safety assessment methods. Specifically, the proposed workflow details exchange flows between the RFLP (Requirements, Functional, Logical, Physical) method, the FHA (Functional Hazard Analysis), the FMEA (Failure Mode and Effects Analysis), the MBSA and simulation, and the FTA (Fault Tree Analysis). These analyses are complemented with multiphysics modeling and simulation to observe system behavior in functional and failure scenarios, with the aim of requirements verification. The design workflow has been applied to a winged Unmanned Aerial Vehicle to apply the parallel process and the necessary interaction of MBSE and MBSA approaches. The information flows between the individual activities proved effective for designing a safe system before the verification phase. The main benefit of the proposed workflow is providing both the design and safety team with some interaction points, thus avoiding a lack of safety-critical analysis in the early phases of system design.

The role of optimization-based design exploration in early-stage architectural design has been increasingly recognized and valued. It has been widely considered an effective approach to achieving performance-informed and performance-driven design. Nevertheless, there is little research into how such design exploration can be adapted to various early-stage architectural design tasks. With this motivation, this paper revolves around a computer-aided design workflow for early-stage building massing design optimization and exploration while presenting three workshop case studies to demonstrate how the workflow can be intertwined with the design process. The design workflow is based on EvoMass, an integrated building massing design generation and optimization tool in Rhino-Grasshopper. The case study illustrates task-specific applications of the design workflow for synthesizing building design, finding design precedents, and understanding the interrelationship between formal attributes and building performance. The paper concludes by discussing the relevant efficacy of the design workflow for architectural design.

Creative interior design matching the indoor structure generated through diffusion model with an improved control network

AI-driven interior design generation offers promising applications. However, current AI-based diffusion models struggle to generate indoor layouts in pixel-level alignment with the indoor structure. This study proposes a new stable diffusion-based interior design workflow with an Interior design Control Network (IDCN). IDCN ensures that the batch-generated creative interior designs based on an input image of an unfurnished room match the indoor structure. Generating innovative designs and rendering images directly with the proposed method eliminates the tedious creative design and drawing work in traditional design practices. The results indicate that the proposed method with the new design approach achieves nearly real-time design generation and modification and significantly enhances design creativity and efficiency. Moreover, the proposed method can be generalized to other design generation tasks, thereby promoting the transformation toward intelligent design. (c) 2024 The Author(s). Immersive systems have shown significant potential in enhancing creative design processes. While extensively applied in various fields, their integration into traditional art design workflows remains underexplored. This study attempts to address this gap by investigating how XR technology can be integrated into shadow puppetry, a traditional Chinese art form. We developed and tested a system called "ShadowRehearsal" among practitioners, demonstrating that XR technology can refine traditional art workflows by enhancing rapid prototyping and testing of design concepts. Our findings suggest that such integration fosters greater innovation and efficiency in traditional art practices, providing a framework for broader applications of XR technologies in preserving and innovating traditional arts.

Fuel cells (FCs) are promising eco-friendly power sources. Nevertheless, there are challenges to overcome if they are to be widely deployed in areas such as degradation avoidance and control, where the knowledge of the unavailable concentrations is crucial. In this respect, observers can provide unavailable quantities based on an estimation algorithm and available measurements. This paper presents an FC concentration observer design workflow, covering the model-based design of experiments (DOE), their execution, systematic nonlinear identification, and measurement-based validation. The model-based DOE and the validation with a mass spectrometer, including dynamic operation, are unique for PEMFC observers. The workflow is demonstrated with a constrained extended Kalman filter observer on a 30 kW polymer electrolyte membrane FC (PEMFC) test stand. A control-oriented model serves as the workflow basis, and the DOE is based on optimizing the parameter sensitivity. The test stand delivers the measurements, the parametrization comprises a sensitivity analysis, and the experimentally validated observer yields outstanding concentration estimation performance.
