Community detection in networks receives much attention recently. In this paper, we investigate a recently proposed community detection algorithm—label propagation algorithm (LPA), and propose a new algorithm to make it more suitable for bipartite networks. We demonstrate through five real world data sets that the new algorithm, while maintaining the accuracy and the near linear time complexity of the standard LPA, is more stable than the latter. More importantly, the new algorithm is readily parallelized, which implies that it is potential for real time community analysis of large-scale bipartite networks.

Music transcription consists in transforming the musical content of audio data into a symbolic representation. The objective of this study is to investigate a transcription system for polyphonic piano. The proposed method focuses on temporal musical structures, note events and their main characteristics: the attack instant and the pitch. Onset detection exploits a time-frequency representation of the audio signal. Note classification is based on constant Q transform (CQT) and support vector machines (SVMs). Finally, to validate our method, we present a collection of experiments using a wide number of musical pieces of heterogeneous style.

In machine vision and the vehicle recognition system, removal of moving vehicle shadows is a significant topic. In this paper, we propose a novel method to detect shadows in traffic video sequences. Firstly, a set of moving regions are segmented from the video sequence using a background subtraction technique. Secondly, the fast normalized cross-correlation (FNCC) is adopted to detect shadows in moving regions from grayscale video sequences. By utilizing three sum-table schemes, the FNCC algorithm dramatically reduces the computational complexity compared to the traditional normalized cross correlation (NCC) algorithm. And our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed shadows removal method is accurate and efficient.

In this paper we investigate both experimentally and via simulation the monitoring of fiber link quality in a PON using optical coding technology. We use a new, simple and cost-effective coding scheme well adapted to the monitoring application, namely periodic coding. We discuss design issues for periodic coding and the optimal detection criteria. We develop a reduced complexity maximum-likelihood sequence estimation (RC-MLSE) algorithm for monitoring. We conduct experiments to validate our detection algorithm using four periodic encoders that we designed and fabricated. These encoders were placed at roughly equal distances (within a meter) to represent a partial return from a very high density (geographically) PON. The measured data were fed into our detection algorithm and the exact location of each subscriber was correctly identified. Using the experimental data for the encoder's impulse responses, we completed Monte-Carlo simulations for more realistic PON geographical distributions with randomly located customers. Error-free detection is achieved. We also highlight the importance of averaging to remedy the power/loss budget limitations in our monitoring system to support higher network sizes.

The data set of scientific literature contains abundant knowledge. Currently, most bibliography search engines provide only keyword search or similarity search functions for retrieving information directly stored in the database but neglect mining hidden information. In this article, we design a visual analytic tool called LiterMiner to extract entities such as article, author, affiliation, and keyword from these literature records, establish the relationships among them and display them to help analyst understand them effectively. Especially, LiterMiner uses community detection algorithm to explore academic teams. Our tool has three principle features. First, a sophisticated data clean process is designed for integration of many different formatted literature records. Second, LiterMiner can find academic teams and analyze the resume of an academic team. Third, an interactive and cooperate visualization solution is used to display the analysis result, which help user understand the result better.

This paper presents a novel lane edge feature extraction algorithm based on digital interpolation. Zooming towards the vanishing point of the lanes creates a visual effect of driving. The positions of the lanes should not change significantly on the image plane while the vehicle is moving along the lanes. Considering the position information, more accurate lane features can be extracted. A gradient based vanishing point detection algorithm is incorporated to select the zooming area. The proposed algorithm shows outstanding performance on extracting features belonging solely to the lanes from severe noise environment. The algorithm is capable of removing non-relevant features produced by shadows, other vehicles, trees, buildings etc. The extracted feature map was tested with a classic lane detection algorithm, used in LOIS system. The detection results show that the improved feature map is an important factor to the performance of the whole system.

Lane departure warning Systems (LDWS) have recently become an integral part of many advance vision-based drive assistance systems. However, high cost and the requirement of professional installation have limited such systems to mostly commercial or luxury vehicles. To help bring the technology to the mainstream market, we have leveraged the popularity of smart phones and built SmartLDWS, the first LDWS that runs on these devices. SmartLDWS employs a novel lane detection algorithm that is both robust and scalable to overcome poor camera quality and limited processing power faced by most smart phones. Experimental results show that the system performs reliably with extremely low false-positive under different weather and lighting conditions, detecting various types of lane markings at over 30 fps.

Cloning in source code is a well known quality defect that negatively affects software maintenance. In contrast, little is known about cloning in requirements specifications. We present a study on cloning in 11 real-world requirements specifications comprising 2,500 pages. For specification clone detection, an existing code clone detection tool is adapted and its precision analyzed. The study shows that a considerable amount of cloning exists, although the large variation between specifications suggests that some authors manage to avoid cloning. Examples of frequent types of clones are given and the negative consequences of cloning, particularly the obliteration of commonalities and variations, are discussed.

Recommender systems usually propose items to single users. However, in some domains like Mobile IPTV or Satellite Systems it might be impossible to generate a program schedule for each user, because of bandwidth limitations. A few approaches were proposed to generate group recommendations. However, these approaches take into account that groups of users already exist and no recommender system is able to detect intrinsic users communities. This paper describes an algorithm that detects groups of users whose preferences are similar and predicts recommendations for such groups. Groups of different granularities are generated through a modularity-based Community detection algorithm, making it possible for a content provider to explore the trade off between the level of personalization of the recommendations and the number of channels. Experimental results show that the quality of group recommendations increases linearly with the number of groups created.

According to the problem of the low recognition rate of speaker-independent recognition in intelligent robot, a kind of endpoint detection algorithm with double threshold is adopted and the speech endpoint can be detected accurately. The mixed parameter of Mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) and fractal dimension is used as the feature parameter, and the intelligent robot command-word recognition system based on hidden Markov models (HMM) is realized. The recognition effect achieves above 85%. Then the performance of MFCC and the mixed parameter of MFCC and fractal dimension is contrasted and analyzed. The experiment result shows that the system recognition rate is improved by the algorithm of mixed parameter, and the system recognition performance is optimized.
