An effective method is presented to rapidly detect circular-object clusters in large remote sensing images. The method uses a sliding window to cut the original image into several sub-images to accelerate the detecting speed, in each of which circles are detected by adopting a circle detection algorithm based on shape parameters. In terms of their number and their spatial distribution regulation, these circles are verified to obtain the real circluar objects and to detect the circular-object clusters by a region-growing-based clustering method. Test results from a series of experiments on large natural images (up to 10,000times10,000) indicate that average correct recognition rates of about 85% and the average running time of about 8 s can be achieved by using the proposed method.

Electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most important physiological parameter that gives correct assessment of heart function. QRS complex is a prominent waveform in an ECG that provides the basis for analyzing heart rate variability (HRV). HRV refers to the beat-to-beat alterations in heart rate. Commercial devices these days provide preset computerized measurement of HRV, thus providing the cardiologist a simple tool for both research and clinical learning. To obtain meaningful data from the ECG, a noise free inter-beat interval (IBI) time series is required to be extracted. This is realized using standard peak detection algorithms packed with data acquisition hardware and software. The aim of this paper is to describe various QRS detection methods used to derive HRV. It also reviews various time and frequency domain HRV parameters. The significance and meaning of these different measures of HRV are a potential area of research.

An efficient, joint transmission delay and channel parameter estimation algorithm is proposed for uplink asynchronous direct-sequence code-division multiple access (DS-CDMA) systems based on the space-alternating generalized expectation maximization (SAGE) framework. The marginal likelihood of the unknown parameters, averaged over the data sequence, as well as the expectation and maximization steps of the SAGE algorithm are derived analytically. To implement the proposed algorithm, a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique, called Gibbs sampling, is employed to compute the a posteriori probabilities of data symbols in a computationally efficient way. Computer simulations show that the proposed algorithm has excellent estimation performance. This so-called MCMC-SAGE receiver is guaranteed to converge in likelihood.

A very efficient algorithm was proposed for fast template matching. The coarse-to-fine strategy was adopted in this algorithm. At coarse searching stage, local entropy difference was employed for template and sub-window of characterizing. Moreover, integral image and square integral image of the input image were utilized to speed up the local entropy difference calculating. After obtaining the local entropy differences between every position from the input image, the candidates table was built by threshold determining. At the fine searching stage, a new matching criterion, called as compound correlation (CC), was introduced for the best similar position within candidates table. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm was compared to FFT-based normalized cross correlation algorithm (NCCA) and sequential similarity detection algorithm (SSDA) which was based on resolution-reducing. The experimental results have shown that the proposed algorithm consumed less time in template matching than FFT-Based NCC and SSDA. Moreover, it performed better in robustness than SSDA.

Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) is a major concern for microwave radiometry. In September-October 2008, an airborne campaign for observing L-band RFI was conducted and included approximately fifty hours of flight time. The campaign included test flights in Grand Junction, Colorado, observations over soil moisture ground truth sites in Iowa and Maryland, transit and return flights from Colorado to Maryland, and dedicated RFI observing missions over urban areas. In this paper, the L-band digital backend and its RFI detection and mitigation algorithms are described. RFI statistics and examples from the airborne campaign are also presented.

A common problem affecting most image resizing detection algorithms is that they are susceptible to JPEG compression. This is because JPEG introduces periodic artifacts, as it works on 8×8 blocks. We propose a novel yet counter intuitive technique to "denoise" JPEG images by adding Gaussian noise. We add a suitable amount of Gaussian noise to a resized and JPEG compressed image so that the periodicity due to JPEG compression is suppressed while that due to resizing is retained. The controlled Gaussian noise addition works better than median filtering and weighted averaging based filtering for suppressing the JPEG induced periodicity.

Long-term fine-grained continuous tracking is still not feasible with today's algorithms and protocols. There are two main obstacles. The first is the need for efficient, low-power communication protocols. Many current protocols employ energy-expensive methods to achieve reliable communication for arbitrary traffic situations. The second challenge is the lack of a robust presence detection algorithm that differentiates between ambient packet loss and packet loss due to missing items. We will demonstrate a continuous tracking system using a simple communication protocol, Uni-HB, with the detection algorithms that we designed to yield low false alarm rates while achieving timely loss notification.

Fixed-complexity sphere decoder (FSD), which consists of ordering stage and tree-search stage, achieves a quasiML performance while requiring a fixed computational effort independent of the noise power and channel conditioning. Nevertheless, it requires a specific signal ordering using the VBLAST algorithm which has a high complexity due to the iterative pseudo-inversion of the channel matrix. In this paper, we propose two schemes to reduce the complexity of FSD algorithm in the ordering and tree-search stages, respectively, while achieving quasi-ML performance. In the ordering stage, we propose QR-decomposition-based FSD signal ordering (FSDSQRD) that requires only a few number of additional complex flops compared to the unsorted QRD. In the tree-search stage, we introduce a threshold-based complexity reduction approach for FSD depending on the reliability of the signal with the lowest received SNR. Numerical results show that in a 4×4 system, the proposed FSD-SQRD requires only 17.2% of the computational efforts required by a reduced-complexity VBLAST approach. Moreover, using 16-QAM, simulation results show that when the proposed threshold-based approach is employed, FSD requires only 69.5% of its full complexity.

Interactive mobile robots require object/subject detection in very visually complex environments. In the field of computer vision, specially when applied to robotics, several approaches like face detection, face recognition and pedestrian detection often have to deal with issues associated to bad illumination and strong featured background. These issues imply lack of performance because human detection algorithms will frequently process the whole image searching for features. Also, background segmentation approaches are commonly used to solve this problem on static camera surveillance. However all these approaches are unable to effectively deal with the constant background changes that certainly happen when the camera sensor is installed on a mobile robot. Hence, in this work we propose a Horopter based Dynamic Background Segmentation solution to this problem. Results show that our approach, significantly enhanced tracking, and consequently improved movement classification towards interaction.

Circulating power flows are possible in power systems and can lead to unnecessary power losses and voltage drops in the transmission system. The most common example is circulating Mvars caused by transformers with unbalanced tap ratios. This paper presents an algorithm to detect circulating real and reactive flows in a power system and also provides a metric to rank the severity of these circulating flows. Examples and causes of circulating flows are presented from large North American cases. The visualization of circulating flows is discussed, as well as the use of circulating flow information for bad data detection.
