Curvilinear structures are useful features in a variety of applications. Compared to other commonly used features such as edges, there are relatively few work on curvilinear structure detection and its performance evaluation. In this paper we propose a novel supervised methodology for evaluating the performance of curvilinear structure detection algorithms. We consider the two aspects of performance, namely the detection rate and detection accuracy, respectively in contrast to their mixed handling in earlier approaches that typically produces biased impression of detection quality. By doing so, the proposed performance measures lead to a more informative and precise performance characterization. We demonstrate the advantages of our approach using both synthetic and real examples.

With the rapid popularity of the Internet, a large amount of new malware is produced every day, while the traditional signature based malware detection algorithm is unable to detect such unseen malware. In recent years, many machine learning based algorithms have been proposed to detect new malware, and several of these algorithms are able to achieve quite good detection performance when supplied with plenty of training data. However, most of these algorithms just focus on how to improve the classification performance, while the robustness is not taken into consideration. This paper performs a detailed analysis on the robustness of four well-known machine learning based malware detection approaches, i.e. the DLL and API feature, the string feature, PE-Miner and the byte level N-Gram feature. We proposed two pretense approaches under which malware is able to pretend to be benign and bypass the detection algorithms. Experimental results show that the performances of these detection algorithms decline greatly under the pretense approaches. The lack of robustness makes these algorithms unable to be used in real world applications. In future works of machine learning based malware detection, researchers have to take the problem of robustness seriously.

The whole physiological state of cardiac electrical activity is reflected by electrocardiogram (ECG) signals collected from the body surface. ECG signals can be used as important basis for the diagnosis of heart disease. However, when analyzing ECG signals, people often process the signals in a record into units of heartbeats. Therefore, accurate heartbeat detection is an important prerequisite for the correct diagnosis of heart disease by the machine. The traditional heartbeat detection only obtains the QRS complex based on the Pan-Tompkins algorithm, and then performs time interception based on previous experience (forward and backward). The accuracy of heartbeats detection will be affected by individual differences. In this paper, an optimized Pan-Tompkins algorithm based on adding P-wave and T-wave location is proposed for the detection of ECG heartbeats. This algorithm was evaluated using 109966 samples from the MIT- BIH Arrhythmia Database including a variety of arrhythmia data (such as atrioventricular block, ventricular tachycardia, early ventricular contraction, atrial flutter, ventricular premature beats, ventricular fibrillation). 109519 samples were correctly detected from 109966 heartbeats. This method achieved 99.68% positive prediction rate(P +) with 99.90% sensitivity)SE). Our approach will lay a foundation for the processing of ECG signals and therefore improve the accuracy for the diagnosis of heart diseases.

In neutral atom quantum computers, readout and preparation of the atomic qubits are usually based on fluorescence imaging and subsequent analysis of the acquired image. For each atom site, the brightness or some comparable metric is estimated and used to predict the presence or absence of an atom. Across different setups, we can see a vast number of different approaches used to analyze these images. Often, the choice of detection algorithm is either not mentioned at all or it is not justified. We investigate several different algorithms and compare their performance in terms of both precision and execution run time. To do so, we rely on a set of synthetic images across different simulated exposure times with known occupancy states, which we generated using a previously validated imaging simulation. Since the use of simulation provides us with the ground truth of atom site occupancy, we can easily state precise error rates and variances of the reconstructed property. However, knowing the relative performance of these algorithms is not sufficient to justify their use, since better ones can exist that were not compared. To investigate this possibility, we calculated the Cramer-Rao bound in order to establish an upper limit that even a perfect estimator cannot outperform. As the metric of choice, we used the number of photonelectrons that can be contributed to a specific atom site. Every estimator that reconstructs a different property can simply be scaled accordingly. Since the bound depends on the occupancy of neighboring sites, we provide the best and worst cases, as well as a half filled one, which should represent an averaged bound best. Our comparison shows that of our tested algorithms, a global nonlinear least-squares solver that uses the optical system's point spread function (PSF) to return a global bias and each sites' number of photoelectrons performed the best, on average crossing the worst-case bound for longer exposure times. Road detection is a relevant task within vision-based systems devoted to assist the driver. Although they have been improved during the last decade, these algorithms are usually validated using qualitative results. Nonetheless, quantitative evaluation is necessary either to enable the comparison between different algorithms or to achieve the optimal performance of a given one. In this paper we present a composite index to quantitatively assess the performance of road detection algorithms. The measure is based on a weighted combination of different evaluations which use a trade-off between precision and recall scores. Obtaining a single index score is a major benefit. It can be used to easily compare algorithms or to properly set their parameters. Moreover, innovatively our proposal includes a human perception criterion to improve its usefulness. Experiments on real-world data corroborate the usefulness of the proposed index.

The main objective of this paper is to discuss the effects of signature mismatch on hyperspectral target detection algorithms. The main causes of mismatch are atmospheric propagation, intrinsic spectral variability, sensor noise, and sensor artifacts. We provide a theoretical analysis that shows the effects of mismatch on adaptive detection algorithms, which use estimates of background covariance matrix, and we present a systematic diagonal loading technique which provides controlled robustness to mismatch.

We address the problem of unstructured road detection. This paper tries to build a database named OffRoadScene, which addresses the need for experimental data to quantitatively evaluate the performance of different unstructured road detection algorithms. OffRoadScene is comprised of two level of databases. In the first level, each frame document consists of not only image information, but also information of GPS (Global Position System), IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) and laser scanner. In the second level, original images and corresponding benchmarks are offered. 550 series unstructured road images and 120 various scenarios of images are included currently. In addition, 13 video segments are in video segments file. In support of expanding OffRoadScene, we present a custom-made labeling software for assisting users who wish to add their own images. Finally, we explain how to use this database by evaluating some state-of-the-art unstructured road detection algorithms.

Corners in images represent a lot of important information. Extracting corners accurately is significant to image processing, which can reduce much of the calculations. In this paper, two widely used corner detection algorithms, SUSAN and Harris corner detection algorithms which are both based on intensity, were compared in stability, noise immunity and complexity quantificationally via stability factor eta, anti-noise factor rho and the runtime of each algorithm. It concluded that Harris corner detection algorithm was superior to SUSAN corner detection algorithm on the whole. And the comparison result was applied to an image matching experiment. It was verified that the quantitative evaluations of these two corner detection algorithms were valid through calculating match efficiency, defined as correct matching corner pairs dividing by matching time, which can reflect the performances of a corner detection algorithm comprehensively. The work of this paper can provide a direction to the improvement and the utilization of these two corner detection algorithms.

In the conclusion of the paper “Low-Complexity SIC detection algorithms for Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Systems” published in 2015, it is claimed that the proposed optimal-ordered successive interference cancellation (OSIC) detector mainly uses “fast Givens rotations” and a new method for updating the squared norms of the rows in the inverse Cholesky factor of the error covariance matrix, to achieve the lowest average complexity among the existing OSIC detectors, including a previous one published in 2011 that also utilizes the inverse Cholesky factor and Givens rotations. This paper shows that “fast Givens rotations” proposed by the above-mentioned paper in 2015 and the Givens rotations utilized in the previous detector are similar and then they should both require the same complexity. We also show that the detector proposed in 2015 and the previous detector both take the dominant complexity to compute the initial inverse Cholesky factor and triangularize the permuted inverse Cholesky factor by Givens rotations, and then the dominant complexity is not affected by the method to update the squared norms of the rows in the inverse Cholesky factor. Finally, it is concluded that both the detectors require the same dominant complexity, including the same average complexity when both of them permute the channel matrix in the same way. On the other hand, we revise the incorrect complexities quoted or claimed in the above-mentioned paper published in 2015, to show that the worst-case complexity of the OSIC detector proposed in 2015 is equal to that of the previous OSIC detector.

8 times 8 transform has been introduced in H.264psilas high profile to improve the video quality. After transform and quantization, if all the coefficients of the blockpsilas residue data become zero, this block is called all-zero block (AZB). Many 4 times 4 transform AZB early detection algorithms have been proposed to skip transform and quantization process. In this paper, after theoretical analysis performed for the sufficient condition of 8 times 8 AZB detection, sum of absolute differences(SAD) and sum of absolute transformed(SATD) based 8 times 8 AZB detection algorithms are proposed. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithms achieve major improvement of computation reduction from 0.95% to 79.48% for 720p sequences. The computation reduction increases as QP increases.
