An efficient disparity estimation and occlusion detection and characterization algorithm for multiocular systems is presented. A dynamic programming algorithm, using a multiview matching cost as well as pure gometrical constraints, is used to provide an estimate of the disparity field and to identify occluded areas. An important advantage of this approach is that not only are the occluded points simultaneously detected, but they are also characterized by the number of views where each point is occluded. Specifically, a 'state' map describing the number of matches for each imaged pixel and thus identifying occluded points in the multiview sequence is produced. The disparity and state information is then coded using a directional coding technique and applied to obtain virtual images from intermediate viewpoints. Experimental results, obtained using a four-view image sequence, illustrate the performance of the proposed technique.

We have developed an eye-position tracking stereoscopic projector which employs image shifting optics. The display allows 3D images to be viewed without special glasses from any position along a lateral axis. Its image shifting device contains a plane parallel glass plate and is installed in a liquid crystal projector. Refraction produced by inclination of the glass plate shifts the optical axis of the projected image. Since the only moving part in the optics is the lightweight glass plate, the response of the image shifting device is both fast and precise enough for interactive 3D-CAD and virtual reality applications. To improve the system's interactive response, we have widened the stereoscopic viewing area by adding a device which causes the image to vibrate laterally. Also we use a new tracking algorithm which reduces the tracking error that would ordinarily be created by delay time. Experimental results confirm the success of these improvements.

Microcalcifications are important cues used by radiologists for early detection in breast cancer. Individually, microcalcifications are difficult to detect, and often contextual information (e.g. clustering, location relative to ducts) can be exploited to aid in their detection. We have developed an algorithm for constructing a hierarchical pyramid/neural network (HPNN) architecture to automatically learn context information for detection. To test the HPNN we first examined if the hierarchical architecture improves detection of individual microcalcifications and if context is in fact extracted by the network hierarchy. We compared the performance of our hierarchical architecture versus a single neural network receiving input from all resolutions of a feature pyramid. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) analysis shows that the hierarchical architecture reduces false positives by a factor of two. We examined hidden units at various levels of the processing hierarchy and found what appears to be representations of ductal location. We next investigated the utility of the HPNN if integrated as part of a complete computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) system for microcalcification detection, such as that being developed at the University of Chicago. Using ROC analysis, we tested the HPNN's ability to eliminate false positive regions of interest generated by the computer, comparing its performance to the neural network currently used in the Chicago system. The HPNN achieves an area under the ROC curve of Az equal to .94 and a false positive fraction of FPF equal to .21 at TPF equals 1.0. This is in comparison to the results reported for the Chicago network; Az equal to .91, FPF equal to .43 at TPF equal to 1.0. These differences are statistically significant. We conclude that the HPNN algorithm is able to utilize contextual information for improving microcalcifications detection and potentially reduce the false positive rates in CAD systems.

In this article, we present a method for estimating the translational motion parameters of a target from its ISAR signature. The method exploits the phase of the target's frequency response and does not require two-dimensional Fourier processing. The basis for this method is a phase difference indicator which converges to an absolute minimum when the phase is compensated with the true values of the motion parameters. The analysis of the phase difference indicator leads to an algorithm for motion parameter optimization. Processing of simulated and experimental ISAR signatures demonstrates that the phase difference method is extremely computationally efficient and equally accurate when compared to robust techniques based on entropy or Fisher information indicators.

To overcome some of the well-known artefacts stemming from block-based motion compensation, grid-based techniques have been proposed in the past as a promising alternative to block matching. While the latter is restricted to simple translational motion, grid-based compensation employs e.g. an affine model when triangular meshes are assumed. The theoretically superior model, however, will perform worse at object boundaries where the connectivity constraint of the meshes causes smoothing of the underlying discontinuous motion vector field. This effect can be diminished by providing an individual grid for each object in a scene. The crucial part of grid-based motion prediction is the technique of tracking mesh vertices. In contrast to block matching, motion estimation of vertices cannot be done independently without sacrificing prediction gain. This paper discuses different algorithms for vertex tracking. The issue of tracking at object boundaries and the influence of the resampling algorithm on the prediction gain are addressed in detail. Object grids, carrying both shape and motion information, are evaluated further in terms of shape coding efficiency and temporal scalability. Both aspects become important when aiming at functional coding for low bit rates, as it is currently being investigated in the framework of MPEG-4.

In this paper, we propose a randomized algorithm to estimate the planar motion parameters of a finite closed set. By randomly searching points on two shapes measured at different times, we determine the centroids and translation of the planar shapes. Taking these centroids as reference points, the algorithm proceeds to determine the point-to- point correspondences by randomly searching three points on each shape that form congruent triangles. After the point correspondences have been determined, the rotation is estimated by solving the rigid motion equation.

Ship traffic surveillance plays an important role in providing safety of shipping, traffic management as well as treating a great deal of related environmental problems. One of the quite new but promising possibilities for this purpose lies in using satellite-borne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imagery. A moving ship produces a set of waves (ship wakes) often appearing in the image as bright or dark linear structures. These structures can provide information on both ship direction and speed. Ln the work presented here, the possibility of automatic detection of ship wakes was tested by applying the Radon transformation to the area surrounding the ship, followed by a verification of each detected wake by a set of criteria to discern it from other wake-like linear structures which are very often appearing in SAR imagery. Different methods for the improvement of the original image are applied as a preprocessing technique for the Radon transformation. The success of the algorithm implementation was found to depend greatly upon both wake and image appearances. The band-pass filtering together with a non-linear image amplification proved to be of use for the detection of practically invisible wakes.

A novel syntactic region growing and recognition algorithm called SRG will be presented. The primary function of SRG algorithm is detection of structured regions of interest in given image. The recognition technique operates on region's selected features, it is a subject of the next paper. The SRG algorithm can be outlined as follows. Preprocessing is performed to isolate the kernels of potential regions. The first level regions are grown until the region transition are detected. Regions sharing the same transition boundary are merged. The second level regions are grown and merged if they are within the same transition boundary. Growing process is repeated as necessary until whole image or specified region of interest is covered. Features such as area, depth, and others, are computed for each level region and are used for recognition. The recognition is based on region features without regard to region level. The algorithm was designed for analysis of NDE (nondestructive evaluation) images. In particular, it was successfully tested on X-ray images and on ultrasonic contact scan images of ceramic specimens for detection of microstructural defects. The results of these tests are included in the paper.

Differential semblance measures are unique amongst velocity inversion objectives in having well-defined and smooth high frequency asymptotics. A version appropriate for analysis of CMP gathers and layered models is particularly easy to analyse and economical for numerical experimentation. For model-consistent data, the DS objective measures the discrepancy in takeoff slowness of rays, weighted by the energy in the data - without of course requiring that events be identified or rays traced. Numerical experiments with synthetic data illustrate the theoretical properties.
